nestled along the curve of the bay, portixol basks under a quilt of spring clouds, its past as a humble fishing village quietly echoing beneath its modern, chic façade. the contrasting cool blues of the sea against the warm hues of the quaint buildings paint a picture of serene transformation. here, where the Mediterranean laps gently at rocky edges, the soft rustle of palm leaves in the breeze and the distant murmur of city life merge into a symphony of the old and the new. this image not only captures portixol's charm but also its evolution from simplicity to one of europe’s most coveted addresses.

The story of this photo:

This is an early morning shot of a little hut at our hotel facility in Krabi. As usual, we had to get up rather early to catch our bus. But this time I took some time after the breakfast to wander through the garden and take some photos. If there is one thing that I hate about those organized tours, it is the drill of getting up really early every day. However, at some point you start to get into this flow where everything starts happening automatically. Some time later, you wake up in the bus and try to remember what you had for breakfast. This morning was different!

Take a look at my "HDR Cookbook"! It contains some more information on my techniques.

How it was shot:

> Taken with a monopod

> Three exposures (0, -2, +2 ev) autobracketed

> Camera: Nikon D90

> Lens: Sigma 10-20mm F3,5 EX DC HSM

> Details can be found here

How it was tonemapped:

> Preparation: Developed the raw files with ACR mainly in order to reduce the CA [details]

> Photomatix version 3.1 (Detail Enhancer)

> Two different versions, a "normal" one and a "cold" one (color temperature set to -7) - blended later in Photoshop

How it was post-processed:

> Post-processing was done in Photoshop

> Blended the sky of the "cold" HDR into the "normal" HDR using a layer mask

> Saturation, Levels and Selective Color adjustment layer on the sky to bring back the blue tones

> Topaz Denoise on the sky [details]

> Topaz Adjust on the foreground (anything except the sky) to enhance the details and the colors [details]

> Topaz Denoise on the foreground (less aggressive setting) [details]

> Saturation and Curves adjustment layers to enhance the colors and the contrast of the foreground

> Sharpening on the foreground using the high-pass filter [details]

BDI Australian Beaches

LORD HOWE ISLAND GALLERIES

Lord Howe Island is known as "The Last Paradise" and not without some considerable justification.

The coral surrounding the island and in the lagoon is the furthest southern coral in the world apart from some coral around Balls Pyramid 20km South East of Lord Howe.

With global warming seriously threatening the very existance of Australia's Great Barrier Reef it looks as if Lord Howe will be a last refuge for coral reefs as we know them today.

There are legally limited numbers of cars residents and visitors to World Heritage listed Lord Howe and the only way to get around is on foot or by bicycle or boat.

Accommodation is limited so costs are comparatively high.Nevertheless the natural beauty of this magnificent paradise make every dollar spent well worthwhile.

At least 10 days is needed to actively explore the island and you will need every bit of that time as every day starts early and ends late, and you will be a whole lot fitter by the time you jump reluctantly back on the plane home.

David Lawson's was a well-known local bus and coach operator in the Kirkintilloch area and the company had its origins in a local carting and transportation concern based at one of the town's main taverns. Indeed, part of the Lawson's company is still in business as the undertaking side of the concern, a common side line for such family concerns, became a freestanding company who still trade in the town.

By 1939 when this issue of the annual book was issued the bus and coach operations of Lawson's was in fact owned by the Alexander's concern, one of the biggest transport operators in Scotland and itself part of the SMT Group of companies. Lawson's was allowed to keep the fleet name and livery - a nod to local loyalties - until the early 1960s. The book used this cover for some years - and burly Highlander could almost have been borrowed from contemporary MacBraynes travel books! As can be seen Lawson's offered a wide range of coach holidays from day tours to extended 14 day jaunts around England. At the time coach holidays were increasingly popular and many would be re-introduced after the war.

A town full of little cottages in narrow streets, many of which look out towards the North Sea, this is typical of the seaside resort of Southwold in Suffolk on the East coast of England.

The two adjoining light coloured cottages, no. 14 and 15, Bay View and East Cliff respectively, were built in the late eighteenth century and have since been somewhat modified, They sit on a street called East Cliff which forms a small triangle giving the cottages an open view of the sea.

The two cottages along with their associated railings are grade II listed.
