After emerging in 2009 with his 3x-platinum debut single, “Whatcha Say,” Miami-born singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor Jason Derulo has parlayed his songwriting and performing talent and sheer determination into becoming a regular fixture on the pop chart over the last three years with a steady stream of best-selling singles, including the 2x-platinum “In My Head” and the 2x-platinum “Ridin’ Solo” from his self-titled 2010 debut, and the platinum “Don’t Wanna Go Home” (which spent five consecutive weeks in the Top 10), and “It Girl,” both from Derulo’s current album Future History. However everything came to a screeching halt in January when Derulo suffered a severe neck injury and was nearly paralyzed while rehearsing for a headlining world tour in support of Future History. Fortunately Derulo made a full recovery and returned in May with an appearance on the season finale of American Idol, during which he performed a new song, “Undefeated,” which featured lyrics submitted by fans through the Coca-Cola Perfect Harmony contest. Derulo has streamed more than half a billion views on his YouTube Channel and sold more than 16 million singles worldwide. He was a five-time winner at the 2011 BMI Pop Awards including being honored as "Songwriter of the Year" (which he shared with Lady Gaga and his debut album’s producer JR Rotem), and took home a 2010 Teen Choice Award for “Choice Music: Album, R&B.” Derulo has also been nominated for a four additional Teen Choice Awards, a 2011 NAACP Image Award, an American Music Award, an ARIA and MOBO Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, and a Much Music Award. He is currently in the studio working on his third album for Beluga Heights/Warner Bros. Records.

The 21-year-old chart-topper is set to release his eagerly awaited sophomore effort, Future History, on Beluga Heights/Warner Bros. Records on September 27th. “It’s where I see myself going in the future,” says Derulo of the meaning behind the album title. “These are the songs I’m going to be singing for the rest of my life, and I’d like my music to live on after I’m no longer around.”

Future History finds Derulo moving seamlessly from ultra-sexy urban dance tracks to poppy love songs, once again offering up a unique genre-blurring blend of varied sounds deeply rooted in pop. This time, production is handled by The Fliptones, including the first single and instant summer anthem “Don’t Wanna Go Home,” as well as hitmakers J.R. Rotem, Frank E, The Dream, and Eman.

“On this album I just wanted to be me,” explains Derulo, who wrote all of the songs on Future History either by himself or in collaboration with top names like Kara Dioguardi, The Dream, and Claude Kelly. The new batch of songs reflects a newfound maturity in Derulo’s personality as well as the music that he’s eager to share with his fans. “I was 19 before and now I’m 21 and I’ve really kind of found myself,” he says. “So you can hear a whole new person, a new being almost.”

While recording in Serenity Studio in Los Angeles, Derulo created the ideal vibe to inspire the creative process. “Music becomes conversational and real,” says Derulo of his ritual of keeping the studio dimly lit with candles so he can put himself in the place he’s singing about in each song, and express exactly what he’s feeling. “I’m not diluting what I’m saying with a pen, and I’m not editing myself. I’m saying what I feel.”

He’s certainly not shying away from his romantic side on Future History, with songs like “It Girl”—on which he sings of his ideal woman being his “greatest hit”—and “Breathing,” a gorgeous love song that also pays tribute to his late cousin with such lyrics as, “I only miss you when I’m breathing.”

“The lyrics are heartfelt, but they’re hidden behind a beat that makes them seem very light,” says Derulo of exposing his softer side on the song, which also features him breaking into an impromptu African chant. “That’s what I think is so cool about it. The song has both a positive and negative vibe. You have both elements.”

And you won’t find Derulo holding back when it comes to the details of sexual relationships on tracks like “Make It Up As We Go,” an ode to friends with benefits, and the testosterone-fueled “My Shit,” which he says is the result of his “no boundaries” approach to expressing himself. “It’s pretty graphic,” admits Derulo with a laugh. “It’s a super-manly sexual side, rather than a gentle sexual side. I think there should be a balance. It’s about an amazing time in the bedroom and just giving ownership to what’s mine.”

Derulo has been honing his songcraft for as long as he can remember. Raised on a healthy diet of Prince, Michael Jackson, Elvis, and Madonna while growing up in Miami, Derulo composed his first song, a little ditty called "Crush On You," on the piano at just eight years old. By the time he was a teen, he was attending the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, where he also competed for and won The Apollo's Grand Championship in 2006.

At the age of 17, Derulo composed and sang the chorus to "Bossy” for Southern rapper Birdman, and soon became a sought-after tunesmith, crafting songs for hip-hop star Lil Wayne, R&B singer Cassie, and girl group Danity Kane, to name a few. Around this time, producer J.R. Rotem’s brother Tommy was searching for artists to sign to Rotem’s new label, Beluga Heights, and contacted Derulo through his MySpace page and invited him out to Los Angeles to pen songs for Sean Kingston’s second album.

"Jason is one of those guys who can write songs for other people but has a career of his own," says Rotem, who produced “Pick Up The Pieces,” “Be Careful,” and “Dumb” on Future History. Rotem quickly realized that Derulo belonged in the spotlight himself. "Jason can write pop songs for women to sing, R&B for men to sing, he can write ballads; he's very eclectic,” Rotem says. “He has really inspired us."

Produced by Rotem, Derulo’s debut album brought him a string of smash hit singles last year—the 3x-platinum "Whatcha Say" and the 2x-platinum "In My Head" and "Ridin' Solo"—making Derulo the first male solo artist to score consecutive No. 1's on Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart in its 17-year-history with his first two entries.

Also that year, Derulo tried his hand at acting, appearing in the MTV feature film Turn the Beat Around in between tours with two of the biggest acts in the world—first on a six-week stint with Lady Gaga on her sold-out “Monster Ball” tour of North America, and then as support for the Black Eyed Peas in Canada—before headlining his own tour. Since then, Derulo’s live show has continued to grow. “The venues have doubled in size which is pretty cool,” he says. “It’s crazy that it happened in two years.”

Derulo plans to take Future History on his most extensive world tour yet, which will begin in Europe before hitting Australia and America, where he’s sure to put on his most memorable shows to date. “I’m excited to perform this album all over the world,” Derulo says. And fans can expect to see him continue to evolve, as he mounts an even bigger live production, complete with never-seen-before dance moves and plenty of costume changes.

“My goals for myself are almost impossible to reach,” explains Derulo when looking to the future. “It’s just me doing what I’m doing, and that is making music for the world, and hopefully making it a brighter place for somebody.”

Brian Epstein

by Andy Edwards

2022

Unveiled 27th August 2022

Brian Epstein was a music entrepreneur who managed The Beatles from 1962 until he died in 1967.

Epstein was born in 1934 into a family of successful retailers in Liverpool.

He managed the family's music shop where, in addition to being a successful retailer, he displayed a gift for talent spotting.

The statue, located on Whitechapel, where Brian's music shop was located, commemorates Brian’s first visit to the Cavern to listen to a local band he was hearing great things about.

He is shown just about to turn into Button Street, which leads to Mathew Street, the home of The Cavern.

The pavement inscription with the statue reads:

Brian Epstein

1934–1967

On 9th November 1961, Brian Epstein left his family-owned record/electrical store NEMS, at 12–14 Whitechapel (opposite), and walked to the Cavern to see the Beatles for the first time.

He managed them through NEMS Enterprises, and his other Liverpool hitmakers included Cilla Black, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer and the Fourmost.

About Mortimer cc: TIDAL BIO

Mortimer is a Jamaican recording artist on the rise; a promising singer with an enthralling voice, who is equally comfortable creating traditional roots reggae as well as contemporary Jamaican music, and who dances between the two to reveal a sound that blends his old-soul sensibilities with a progressive youthfulness. Mortimer’s voice effortlessly glides between a raspy, smoky alto and a silky falsetto, with an unhurried delivery that has become signature of his sound. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, but raised in the rural district of Whitehall, St. Elizabeth (Jamaica), as a youth, Mortimer had dreams of becoming a soldier or an auto engineer, but these aspirations soon took a back seat to music. Mortimer released his first project Message Music in 2014 via VP Records, a four-song effort produced by Jay Crazie Records. The release earned favorable reviews and cemented his commitment to a musical career. An introduction to Jamaican recording artist Protoje, a forefront figurehead in the “Reggae Revival” movement, resulted in the recording of the collaboration “Protection”, the opening track to Protoje’s critically

acclaimed third album Ancient Future, produced by Winta James.

Mortimer continued to work with producer Winta James, featuring on the latter’s Mile High Riddim with the song “Nice Up Di Scene”, as well as a second collaboration with Protoje on the single “Truths & Rights”, included on Protoje’s newest album A Mater Of Time. Other notable releases by Mortimer include “Warning” (2015), “Ganja Train” (2016) and “This Feeling” (2017).

Mortimer is currently expanding his catalog with Winta James. Their next joint release comes in the impressive single “Careful”, to be released October 19th via Overstand Entertainment/Easy Star Records. “Careful” is a cautionary tale, with Mortimer drawing on personal experiences as he ponders trust and betrayal amongst family and friendships. With heavy drum and bass, and fuzzy distorted guitars, the instrumental provides a

dark, aggressive backdrop to Mortimer’s sobering and evocative lyrics. According to Mortimer, music has been a major source of inspiration for many years, beginning at age eight when he sang on his church choir. "I do music because it is my first love and where my passion lies. For me, it's about a message... One of love, hope, kindness, selflessness, and also an opportunity to share a piece of myself with others," he says. He cites Bob Marley, Jacob Miller, Donny Hathaway, as well as contemporary hitmakers such as Stephen Marley and John Legend as Influences. Mortimer has performed on events such as Protoje’s Ancient Future Live and For The Culture Live, Capleton’s St. Mary Mi Come From, and Arts In The Park. He most recently recorded an acoustic performance for David Rodigan at BBC Radio 1Xtra.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chance Nkosi Gomez known initiated by H.H Swami Jyotirmayanda as Sri Govinda walks an integral yogic path in which photography is the primary creative field of expression. The medium was introduced during sophomore year of high school by educator Dr. Devin Marsh of Robert Morgan Educational Center. Coming into alignment with light, its nature and articulating the camera was the focus during that time. Thereafter while completing a Photographic Technology Degree, the realization of what made an image “striking” came to the foreground of the inner dialogue. These college years brought forth major absorption and reflection as an apprentice to photographer and educator Tony A. Chirinos of Miami Dade College. The process of working towards a singular idea of interest and thus building a series became the heading from here on while the camera aided in cultivating an adherence to the present moment. The viewfinder resembles a doorway to the unified field of consciousness in which line, shape, form, color, value, texture all dissolve. It is here that the yogi is reminded of sat-chit-ananda (the supreme reality as all-pervading; pure consciousness). As of May 2024 Govinda has completed his 300hr yoga teacher training program at Sattva Yoga Academy studying from Master Yogi Anand Mehrotra in Rishikesh, India, Himalayas. This has strengthened his personal Sadhana and allows one to carry and share ancient Vedic Technology leading others in ultimately directing their intellect to bloom into intuition. As awareness and self-realization grows so does the imagery that is all at once divine in the mastery of capturing and controlling light. Over the last seven years he has self-published six photographic books, Follow me i’ll be right behind you (2017), Sonata - Minimal Study (2018), Birds Singing Lies (2018), Rwanda (2019), Where does the body begin? (2019) & Swayam Jyotis (2023). Currently, Govinda is employed at the Leica Store Miami as a camera specialist and starting his journey as a practitioner of yoga ॐ

For seven years, Mark has been submerged in the Amsterdam ad scene – a place he has always felt at home. From his day job as a creative copywriter at LEMZ, to his night job as an advertising instructor at the JUNIOR* Academy, to his hobbies as board member of Dutch Young Creatives and co-founder of Creatives, Cocktails & Dreams, there is not a corner of the ad world Mark has left unexplored.

In order to break down the borders of his comfort zone, Mark began a project that would test not only his boundaries, but also the boundaries of convention in the field of communication. In January 2014, Mark waved goodbye to his job(s), tossed his home into a backpack, and hit the world as ‘The Backpacker Intern’. In exchange for food and lodgings, Mark helps agencies, brands and charities by providing new perspectives and creative solutions for communication challenges big and small. by Ronnie Spector, Vince Waldron

Synopsis

Expand/Collapse Synopsis

Pop legend Ronnie Spector reveals the story of her dreamlike rise from the streets of Harlem to the pinnacle of rock stardom as lead singer of the Ronettes, and her nightmarish descent into madness as the wife of Phil Spector, the pop hitmaker who kept her a virtual prisoner behind the locked doors of his darkened Beverly Hills mansion. Ronnie’s escape from that ordeal, and her subsequent struggle to regain her voice, her career, and her sanity, provide an emotional climax to this smart, funny, and inspiring autobiography, named by Rolling Stone as one of “The Top 25 Rock Memoirs of All Time.”

Now available for the first time as an eBook, this new digital edition of Be My Baby is a fan’s dream come true. Featuring 75 stunning black and white and color photographs from Ronnie’s personal collection—many appearing in print for the first time—this fully indexed eBook also includes a thoroughly updated discography with the most complete survey of Ronnie’s recording career ever published.

About the Author

Ronnie Spector became an icon at the age of 19, when she rose to fame as lead singer of the Ronettes, the influential girl group responsible for a string of hits that included “Baby I Love You,” “Walking in the Rain,” and ”Be My Baby," which Brian Wilson has called “the greatest record ever.” The embodiment of the heart, soul, and passion of rock and roll, Ronnie Spector was inducted, with the Ronettes, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2007.

Critical Praise for Be My Baby:

“A lively, illuminating read... Spector’s portrait of the energy of the early Sixties music scene is fascinating.”—Kirkus Reviews

“An entertaining, gossipy, whirlwind ride through the 1960s...”—Wendy Leigh, London Sunday Times

“Entertaining, often disturbing... well told and... quite moving. Be My Baby… marks the passage of Ronnie Spector from victim to survivor.”—Alan Light, Rolling Stone

“Funny and observant, consistently engaging… sprinkled with deadpan humor..."—Mike Boehm, The Los Angeles Times

“Despite all the hard times, Ronnie comes across here as a survivor, and the book maintains a surprisingly jaunty tone.” —Ilene Cooper, Booklist

“An enthralling and moving Dante-esque descent through the rock ’n’ roll inferno. One of the three greatest rock ’n’ roll memoirs.” —Jon Wilde, Blitz (London)

"Ronnie went through some tough times, but the important thing is she survived and she's still around to tell the tale. And that's what she does in this book. It's an amazing story. And one of a kind. Just like Ronnie."-- From the Foreword by Cher

Behind Mariah, Michael and the constellation of stars at arguably the most successful record label in history stood a man who didn't often talk to the media or explain his motivations.

Now, a decade after leaving Sony Music Entertainment, Tommy Mottola tells his story in a new book, "Hitmaker: The Man and His Music." He apologizes for the fallout from his marriage to Mariah Carey. He explains the label's behind-the-scenes support for Michael Jackson as the singer's life and career took one strange turn after another. And he traces the arc of the music business as it evolved over the course of his lifetime - from Elvis to the iPod.

As a label executive, Mottola made it a point to stay out of reporters' notebooks. But as an author, he didn't shy from the topics longtime industry watchers are interested in - though he threw away two versions of the book he hated before finding a groove he was comfortable with.

"I always try to take a backseat, even with this book," Mottola said in a phone interview last week. "And my thoughts were always, `Do the work, try to do good work and the results will speak for itself.' That was always my philosophy, though I went against my own philosophy and decided to write this book. So there you go, so much for that."

Mottola, a Bronx native, is a former singer and song pitcher who went on to manage Hall & Oates through superstardom before joining future Sony acquisition CBS Records. He helped guide Sony into the record business and eventually took over the worldwide chairmanship of the company, which sold eight billion records and earned $65 billion in his 15 years as the head of the company.

Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey are just the beginning of the list. The roster also included Bruce Springsteen, Destiny's Child, Celine Dion, The Dixie Chicks, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel ... and don't forget The Latin Explosion with Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Shakira.

His fingerprints remain all over the record business.

"I think he was a genius and ... I don't think we'll be able to see what Tommy Mottola did again because it's definitely a different business out there," said Emilio Estefan, who described Mottola as his brother in a Wednesday phone interview. "He definitely wrote a chapter in the music business that I don't think will be done again."

"Hitmaker," written with Cal Fussman, is no fairy tale, however. He details his successes and the drive that propelled him to the top of the business, but also talks at length about the down times. The 63-year-old is fairly unsparing of the executives who ushered him out at Sony.

"I had a vision really of building this total entertainment company, which obviously today exists as public companies in Live Nation and lots of other companies like that, or AEG, where the company could have participated in every source of revenue," he said. "But there was no one there who even remotely understood what I was talking about at that level."

Mottola says Jackson "snapped" when he lashed out at his label - and Mottola personally - amid accusations of child molestation and declining record sales. Jackson called Mottola the devil and waged a public campaign to be released from his recording contract.

Over time, Mottola said, the two repaired the rift: "That blew over and we ended up being great friends." But as the label's chairman, Mottola was in the uncomfortable position of being the only person telling Jackson no when expenses began to mount on his increasingly extravagant projects.

"We tried on his behalf, for his sake, to put the brakes on many times ..." Mottola said. "And we did the best we could. But at the end of the day Michael was an adult. M was a man in his 30s and 40s when I worked with him and he could make his own decisions at the end of the day even though his advisers may be telling him different."

As for Jackson's legal troubles, Mottola said the label played the role of supporter without forming an opinion about the charges.

"It wasn't our position to pass judgment," he said. "It was really our position to support Michael and that's what we did. We were there and we supported Michael to the best of our ability."

Even more public than the rift with Jackson is Mottola's romance, marriage and eventual divorce from Carey, a 19-year-old backup singer he helped guide to the top of the music industry. Over the years Carey has characterized Mottola as controlling, cloistering her in a mansion she later called "Sing Sing" even as she became the world's most popular performer.

In the book Mottola writes it was "absolutely wrong and inappropriate" to become involved with Carey. He writes he's "truly sorry for any discomfort or pain that all of my good intentions inevitably caused her, and most of all for the scars it left on my two oldest children" from his first marriage.

Mottola felt it was important to lay out the story as he saw it after "harsh" and "untrue" descriptions Carey has given in interviews over the years. He notes Carey asked him to marry her. And of the charges he was restrictive and controlling, a Svengali figure? "Lots of crap."

Emilio Estefan said the divorce from Carey, who was unavailable for comment, led to a dark period for his friend personally, one he's delighted to have helped end by introducing Mottola to his third wife, Mexican actress and singer Thalia. They now have two children together.

"I know the separation between him and Mariah was hard for both of them," Estefan said. "I love both of them, of course. I was a witness and a friend with Mariah, too, for many years being with them at big parties and celebrations. Sometimes things happen and when the whole thing happened I saw him very lonely and I knew Thalia was in New York filming a movie." He suggested they have dinner: "And you know something? They clicked. He called me that night and said, `I love this girl,' and she called me and said, `I love this guy.' Both of them love each other and they have an incredible relationship."

* JACKSON ANNOUNCES SWANSONG SHOWS

MICHAEL JACKSON will make a spectacular live comeback with ten shows in London this summer (09) - his last ever concerts in the U.K. capital.

The King of Pop confirmed on Thursday (05Mar09) he will stage the series of "This Is It" gigs at the O2 Arena in July.

But in a shock development, he also announced he plans never to perform in London again - and hinted it could signal the end of his music career forever, describing the shows as his "final curtain call".

The concerts will be the Thriller hitmaker's first major live performances since 1997.

At a press conference at the O2 Arena, in east London, Jackson walked onstage in front of 2,500 screaming fans to make the announcement.

Wearing dark sunglasses and a black jacket with silver braiding, he hugged the event's host - British TV presenter Dermot O'Leary - before addressing the crowd in a slow drawl.

Jackson said, "I love you so much. Thank you all. This is it. This is it. I just want to say that these will be my final performances in London. This will be it.

"When I say 'This Is It' I really mean this is it. I will be performing the songs my fans want to hear. This is the final... the final curtain call, okay - and I will see you in July. I love you - I really do, you have to know that. I love you so much - really. From the bottom of my heart."

The run of ten shows will begin on 08 July (09). Tickets, priced from $70 (£50), will go on sale on 13 March (09).
