Built in 1783 by Sir Richard Arkwright, a pioneering industrialist, it was one of the first mills in the world to use water power for cotton spinning. The entrance to the Garfield Mausoleum is reminiscent of a Gothic-style church.

The black coating on the tan stone is much like that found on the St. Mary Catholic Church building in Massillon, Ohio about sixty miles south of Cleveland. It was caused by decades of pollution from the many coal-fired steel mill blast furnaces that were very numerous in northeast Ohio.
