Ayaz-Kala is an archaeological site in Northern Uzbekistan, built between the 4th century BCE and the 7th century CE. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Kyzylkum Desert, the site encompasses the ruins of an ancient Khorezm fortress.

Ayaz Kale (also Ayaz-Kala or Ayaz-Qala) in Uzbekistan, a group of clay fortresses is in Choresm. They date during the centuries shortly after Christ's birth.

The arrangement is on the edge the desert Kysylkum about 70 km of Urgench remotely and exists of three fortresses; a lower, middle and upper fortress. The middle and upper fortresses are on natural increases.

They were built between the 4th century B.C. and the 7th century A.D. and the upper fortress is the oldest one. They served the protection of the local population before raids of nomads.

At that time an oasis was in her immediate nearness. For about 1300 years the fortresses are unoccupied. In the 1940s they were rediscovered by the archeologist Sergei Pawlowitsch Tolstow and were exposed.

Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco--Roman theater still used today. Near the theater, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.

A 45 minute uphill morning walk brings me to the top of the Moonshine Hill Road (300 metres or 984 feet). I always pass this horse and pull some roadside grass. The sun is low in late autumn and was only rising above the higher hill in the background around 9am.

The sun rises on Fort Worth, Texas’ Tandy Hills Natural Area.

Old notions store locked against the future.

We took a break and headed out for an evening walk to see what the evening might bring us, We were heading for the top of the hill you can see to shoot the sunset. See the square.

On the way the the light was lovely lighting up the cereal crops, just had to stop and take a few shots along the path to hilltop .

This rocky little village perched on an impossibly steep peak is the jewel in the Riviera's crown. The main attraction is the medieval village itself, with small higgledy-piggledy stone houses and winding lanes (and plenty of galleries and shops), and mesmerising views of the coast.

Here's a view of the largest hilltop castle of northwestern Germany across a pond just in front of it. I'd gone to visit it because of the connection to one of my seventeenth century favorites, Henric Piccardt, syndic of the Groningen Ommelanden and before that something of a rogue at the court of Louis XIV of France. His greatgrandfather, one Johann Kemener (1522-1613), became the court preacher of this castle's count, Arnold II van Bentheim-Tecklenburg (1554-1606). On the second Sunday of advent in 1575 he and his congregation turned to Calvinism. And that fit in quite properly with their sympathy for the struggles which led to the young Dutch Republic, nearby across from today's borders. Piccardt's father became a minister ultimately at Groningen and his uncle Johan, also a protestant minister, was the first historian of Drenthe.

The castle and its town are a delight to visit, and so is the park deep below. That's where I saw that shrubbery Rose, quite fittng for castle gardens.

Low angle view of walkers meeting on a hillside, the late afternoon sun causing heavy flaring in my lens - but I liked the effect!

A sunrise over the land , the last one until next year. This was not the best spot to shoot from as I struggled to find any decent foreground apart from the tall grasses blowing in the wind .
