The Zebra mallow is a very old cultivar of Malva sylvestris, the common mallow, information about which can be found here flic.kr/p/2qAnQG4 . This specific cultivar seems to be very old and, as far as I could ascertain, its origins appear not to have been documented.
While researching the plant, I came across another of Malva sylvestris' common names, French mallow, which appears to be used specifically in the US. This may be due to the fact that it was one of the plants a certain Thomas Jefferson, American Founding Father and third president of the United States, introduced there. Jefferson, like many of his contemporaries was of the opinion that "The greatest service which can be rendered any country is, to add an useful plant to its culture […]". Knowing the devastation the more invasive plants thus introduced have done, we may disagree today. However, politicians and scientifically minded people of the age had to consider feeding the steadily growing population of the former colonies. While he was in France for negotiations with Great Britain and other European nations (1784-1789), Thomas Jefferson sent seeds and cuttings of plants and trees back to the American colonies. While he was abroad, he also visited other countries and exported, sometimes, as in the case of stolen and smuggled rice from Italy, illegally, plants from these countries.
After his return to the US, Jefferson continued his efforts importing and spreading plants from other parts of the world. He conducted, and had enslaved people conduct, experiments on his Virginia plantation, Monticello. He carefully documented failure and success of these experiments.
The above Jefferson quote is from the Appendix to the "Memoir, correspondence, and miscellanies, from the papers of Thomas Jefferson", written and edited by Thomas Jefferson himself as well as his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph. Amusingly, most sources who quote this add "The Fruit Hunters" to the quote. This refers to a 2012 documentary film that seems to include that quote. People apparently continue to re-quote without checking.
With the common mallow, we have arrived at the type genus of the Malvaceae family, meaning the genus from which the family takes its name and the species that was first or is commonly associated with the genus. This is also the plant that, via its French common name, gives the colour mauve its name.
It takes a bit of knowledge of the plant to figure out why the idea of cheese is associated with it. In both English and German, cheese is part of one common name, cheeses and Käsepappel (Käse is cheese in German) respectively. The ripe seeds are grouped in an o-shape that, apparently, reminiscent of a cheese wheel.
Originally native to the lands around the Mediterranea sea, it has long made its way into all parts of Europe and much of Asia. It has also naturalised in the southern parts of Canada and much of the US, with the exception of the very southern part of the country. The species seems to spread easily in cold and moderate climates, but does not seem to be invasive.

The common mallow is originally from Asia and Southern Europe. Today, it can be found along paths and roads, in meadows, hedgerows and fields in many parts of the world. Besides being used as an ornamental plant, it is utilised in a variety of cuisines, in medicine, as colourant and as part of an acid-base indicator.
Malva sylvestris is a species of the mallow genus Malva in the family of Malvaceae and is considered to be the type species for the genus.

High Mallow is a spreading perennial herb, about 3 ft tall. In wild it can grow taller. Stems are straight or prostrate, branched and covered with fine soft hairs or none at all. The leaves are alternately arranged, deep green, soft, and downy. They are roundish, and have 3-7 shallow lobes, each 2-5 cm across. Leaf stalk is either 2-6 cm or 2-13 cm long. The flowers are large, numerous, and of purple color. They appear in clusters of 2-4 in leaf axils. Sepals are five, petals five, pollen large, whitish. Petals are wrinkly to veined on the backs, more than 1.5-2.3 cm long and 1 cm wide, eggshaped, margin notched with a fringe of hairlike projections. Seeds or 'cheeses' are brown to brownish green when ripe, about 2.5 mm wide, 5-7 mm in diameter and are shaped like a cheese wheel which inspired on of its common names. High Mallow is widespread in Africa, Europe and Asia. Within India it is found in the Himalayas, from Kashmir to Kumaon up to an altitude of 2400 m.
Medicinal uses: [Warning: Unverified information] High Mallow possesses the properties common to mucilaginous herbs, and an infusion thereof forms an excellent demulcent in coughs, irritations of the air-passages, flux, affections of the kidney and bladder, etc. In inflammatory conditions of the external parts, the bruised herb forms an excellent application, making, as it does, a natural emollient cataplasm.

"Rolling in the Pollen" by Patti Deters. This long horned bee (Melissodes bimaculata or Macrocera nigra) appears to be having a jolly time rolling around in the white pollen of this pink wildflower. In reality, he is working hard foraging for as much pollen as he can find. These large, hairy black bees are most active in late summer and early autumn when their favorite flowers are in bloom such as this pale pink common Mallo (Malva sylvestris) which some call Tall Mallow, Cheese Flower, Hock Herb, Maws, High mallow, Marsh mallow, or wild hollyhock. If you look close, you can see each tiny pollen ball collecting on the bee's legs that he will take back to the hive. This macro photograph has a square crop.

On yesterday my 5 years old nephew came to my place armed with "his" camera and he told me "aunt bring your camera with you, we're going to take some picture together!" LOL!
And that's just what we did: we went to the gardens and started to hunt flowers, birds, insects, cobwebs and so on...
