Typical that after four days off, the best light comes when I'm back at work. But with the clocks moving and little traffic on the roads due to Easter, I made it out in time.

I've been trying to get a good photo from these unnamed rocks looking Higger Tor for a couple of years. It was a bit of a gamble as they're in a bit of a dip and I knew I'd lose the light early on. Then it was a run on to Carl Wark to soak up the last of the sun's rays.

Higger Tor, Looking to Carl Wark, Peak District, UK.

After a fruitless trip to Mam Tor yesterday morning, I preferred a location closer to home and easier to get to for a Sunday morning. I still set the alarm for 5.45 to make sure I got there in plenty of time.

There was an excellent inversion in Hope Valley but not much mist in Burbage Valley. But just as I was photographing the pre-dawn colours a bank of mist rolled past as the sun started to rise. What a stroke of luck. Soon after this shot the rocks glowed red with warm light before the sun rose into cloud.

I'd added a tiny bit of saturation to the image but I've now removed it an re-uploaded. Might even need the saturation reducing.

Then bumped into the Martin Levers and had a lovely chat. If you have time, please check out his work. He's been a great inspiration to me over the past couple of years.

A good view of Hathersage and the Hope Valley in autumn, from high up on Higger Tor.

One of the best sunrises I've seen - made better by the snow making it difficult for a lot of people to get here, as would usually be the case on a Saturday morning.

Not the most striking sunrise I've seen on Higger Tor. Fortunately, I got a couple of blasts of light and a bit of colour at dawn to make it worth while!

....and here is a little video of those passing aeroplanes made from a few of my startrail shots. (There is no airport within many miles of this location!).

Higger Tor, Derbyshire, under a bit of cloud very early morning 21st August 2019.

After a bit of bouldering and before the rain came.. We did some rock jumping..! :)

Taken with the Olympus XA4 camera which I previously used in week 131 of my 52 film cameras in 52 weeks project:

This was taken atop Higger Tor looking down onto Carl Wark Fort - which was something I'd never heard of until I saw it on the OS Map (see Wikipedia's stub for more info).

You can also see in the distance Longshawe Hall, where my car was parked. Long way isn't it!

A freezing sunrise shot, taken from Higger Tor, Derbyshire, UK.

Apart from the nice sunrise colours, I really like the frozen puddles in the foreground in this shot.

Captured using a Nikon D90 and Tokina 20-35mm, f2.8 lens.

The glorious weather over the last couple of days has meant being able to get out and about away from the city and into the the countryside.

Higger Tor is a fantastic rocky outcrop overlooking a valley and offering views in all directions.

This particular occasion offered incredible views into the distance as there was excellent visibility and no haze.

Taken from the western end of Higger Tor looking just west of north towards Stanage Edge.

Processed to try to remove the colour casts caused by reflections off of the clouds.

124 30 second exposures stacked using Startrails software.

From a quick visit to Higger Tor on sunday, a spur of the moment thing and two hour drive, haven't been here for over 18 months, you can tell winter is on its way

A fantastic morning on Higger Tor when it all just comes together. Albeit briefly.

At first, with the hill cloaked in low cloud, it didn't look too promising. However, the sun managed to sneak below the cloud line briefly as it cleared the horizon, then light up the mist with quite breath taking effect.

One of those morning that serves as a reminder why I love landscape photography and the places I visit so much!

B+W views of Higger Tor in the Peak District

Higger Tor from Carl Wark in the Derbyshire Peak District. Despte the appearance, this is a very accessible area of moorland and ideal for an afternoon's walk. Carl Wark is the site of what is believed to be an iron age fort.

Due to the overcast and wet weather it seems it's the season to look back on old images. This one was from a glorious summer sunrise in August 2011. Not much in the way of processing as it was shot in jpg. Just sharpening, levels and a bit of desaturation.

Happy New year everyone.

The view up to Higger Tor from Carl Wark. The path over is the one I had just walked down and was the one I was about to take back up to it. I love the browns that you see in early spring before the heather gets going again.
