Higger Tor, Derbyshire. It’s been while since the chance for a early start came along, glad I made the effort.
Higger Tor looking out to Upper Burbage Bridge.
After the first lockdown this was one of the first places I visited and the litter was pretty awful. Pleasing to see that this time I barely saw anything.
I spent a good couple of hours wandering around the gritstone outcrops, rocky promontories, boulders and bluffs on the plateau.
For a ten minute walk from the parking area this has to be one of the most accessible and rewarding locations in the Peak District and definitely one of my favourites.
HSS!
A dreich evening on Higger Tor. Mist descends as darkness creeps across the moor. It is thought the name could be derived from the Norse word Yggr, meaning 'fear', or 'the terrifying one' relating to Odin.
After processing this shot I noticed that the tower on the horizon leans slightly to port. Well, it is what it is. As far as the foreground goes it makes no odds. So I'm not changing it.
Not quite the last sunset of 2016 - this was taken on 29th December - but a reasonably fitting bookend for the year nonetheless.
Image taken from Higger Tor, looking across the Derwent Valley towards frosty fields that had barely seen sunlight all day.
All the best for a healthy and peaceful 2017.
As a new week starts, that can only mean one thing, more restrictions, as of Thursday of this week we go into total lockdown (again) same as before, and with restrictions on travel, will county borders be policed, who knows what will happen, stay safe my flickr fam.
The heather in the Peak District is looking fab this year. Missed it last year. I've had a few visits so far and will hopefully squeeze in one more before the colour fades.
I called in on Thursday evening to break the journey back from Flamborough up. I opted for Over Owler Tor as it's only a short walk up from Surprise View car park. Probably 30-40 of us dotted around and at least two workshops going on. Bumped in to a couple of people who I've never met before but have admired their work for some time. Always nice to put faces to names.
Looked promising early on but the cloud quickly passed leaving clear skies.
For once getting an image took a back seat as we chatted away with only half an eye on what was going on.
The light soon went and as we made our way down we passed 20 or so people making their way up eager to take advantage of the clear skies to capture the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.
This is three images focus stacked but what little cloud there was, was fast moving and PS struggled to align the clouds so the sky is replaced from one of the three images. That's allowed isn't it?
If you can, try to get here because the heather is looking so good.
And for the benefit of Richard Krawiec , morning means the forenoon, well before el sol touches the yardarm. In fact, just as the avian population is getting up and stretching. 😁
One more from last weekend, still on the theme of alternate views of Higger Tor, keeping away from the obvious spots.

Recent trip to the Peak District. A slight possibility of a sunset which clearly didn't happen but more of a 'recce.' Found the KitKat stones and had a good explore of Carl Walk.
One more from a great morning out a few weeks ago, the Autumn colours have faded now, it will be a whole year before the opportunity comes round again. Chance of some winter snow soon maybe.....
The sun is growing weak. Light flees, colour draining
in the half light. The bog waits ahead, to the darkening east.

Wet and windy. Approached from Surprise View. Returning in dark conditions, scrambling over stones :)
A shot taken from Higger Tor after the sun had gone down, leaving a warm glow across Over Owler Tor and the high ground beyond.
Despite risking life and certainly limb to get to this position, it was a fabulous morning on Higger Tor yesterday.
