I have sat on this image for a while now as the composition is similar to one in the LPOTY book, but I have to confess to shooting it on numerous occasions over the last few years prior to seeing the book....

Anyways it was a strange morning, freezing cold, windy and with a strange low mist blowing through.

The landscape version of the image I published recently, taken before sunset, with wonderful bright sunlight. Wonderful to experience, with all the shades and shadows, and how the colours come alive, although very hard to control in the camera sometimes.

I wanted to show the path leading into the scene and all the way up Higger Tor in the distance, which is a very steep path walking back up, and a bit of a scramble on the last bit.

The drystone wall you see just under the sun is the remains of an Iron Age Fort. So if you do visit, not only are you witnessing stunning scenery and grit stone rocks shaped by the elements over millennia, you are also walking in the footsteps of people from 2.5 thousand years ago.

Since the clocks changed in October, Buxton has had 160 hours of sunshine, which equates to about 90 mins per day (in summer they can have more than 160 hours of sun in a month). This explains the dearth of newly taken posts at present.

Golden hour at Higger Tor,

Looking out across Hathersage Moor towards Over Owler Tor from the gritstone of Higger Tor.

Higger Tor is a dominant landmark of the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District National Park. It is a gritstone tor overlooking the Burbage Valley and the iron age hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast.

Believe it or not, it is only 8 miles from Sheffield city centre and is actually within the boundary of the city, just 200m from the border with Derbyshire.

Trying out the G9 as a landscape camera. A bit of a grey morning on Saturday, but I think that can sometimes be a good thing when everything is wearing the green of summer?

On a clear November day, the morning sun-light poured in to light the Higger Tree, revealing it's fine detail of lichen as it stretched it's arms in the warmth of the sun. The tips of the grasses shone too like a carpet of dancing jewels at the feet of Higger Tor.

Went shooting with Harsharn, and the weather wasn't great, it was grey and raining, my heart was not dampened because I saw signs of blue sky, as it seems like we lost all hope and we were packing up to go, I saw a red band across the sky, and I was optimistic that the weather might have turned, and it did! So it really made the trip worthwhile!

Kudos to Harsh for trying to stay positive throughout the rain even though there were thoughts of calling it a day due to the rain.

Info:

Higger Tor is a gritstone tor in the Burbage Valley, in the Peak District of England.

It stands in the county of South Yorkshire, about 200 metres (220 yd) from the border with Derbyshire, which runs along the nearest road, approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of Hathersage. Higger Tor overlooks the hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast.

The path from Owler Tor to Higger Tor. Carl Wark is the slightly lower hill to the right. The local stone (millstone grit) was quarried to make millstones and quite a few abandoned ones (like the 2 in the foreground) can be found in the area.

A four shot panoramic stitch from a frosty morning on Higger Tor a couple of Sundays ago. Not one of my faves, but the frost was quite nice.

A fabulous morning on top of Higger Tor for sunrise on a bitterly cold windy morning. Taken shortly after sunrise the warm light catches the rocks known locally as Kit Kat with Carl Wark a iron age hill fort dominant just behind. A day when everything was thrown at us with blizzard on Stanage Edge to wonderful light at Peveril Castle.

From a morning on Higger Tor going back a few weeks ago when the mist rolled in and gave way to some patchy light. I imagine it would've been quite a sight if you was on Carl Wark itself. Shortly after the mist won and I headed off back down to my car.

Soft light over Carl Wark in the distance, with Longshaw and the Eastern Moors beyond. The classic Higger Tor view point, always a favourite spot

I probably spend too much time up here, it’s one of my go to places being quick and easy to get to. So the challenge this year is to find different viewpoints and to stay away from the usual haunts.

Nipped out to Higger tor this morning...... calm before the storm.

Had a play about in Lightroom with this one. Taken on 07/10/15 from Burbage Edge, overlooking Higger Tor in rather windy conditions.

Not the best conditions this morning, the sunrise never quite materialised, overtaken by fast moving low cloud. Still after a bit of a famine recently and a general lack of inspiration it turned out to be a helpful kick start to getting back in the groove.......
