Denver and Rio Grande Western GP40 No. 3083 is the east unit on a helper set at Minturn, Colorado, in July 1984. Behind No. 3083 is a GP40-2, a SD40T-2, a SD45, and two more SD40T-2s. One track over in front of Minturn’s small enginehouse is GP35 No. 3043. These large helper sets were used on the steep 3-percent eastward grade up Tennessee Pass out of the crew change town of Minturn.
This bear grabbed a salmon and ate it while sitting in the water along the riverbank. He used the downed tree trunk as his table. Sometimes you have to make do with the things at hand :-)

The power for Union Pacific’s LJP45 “dirt train” local out of Helper, Utah, sits near the locomotive facility on the frigid, cold night of December 1, 2004. A pair of Rio Grande SD40T-2s are mu’d with a UP SD40-2 and a UP SD60M.

In the summer of 2003, Crawford Hill on BNSF’s Butte Subdivision out of Alliance, Nebraska, featured at least three sets of Cascade green three-window EMD SD60M helper sets, mostly equipped with a fuel tender. On July 22, 2003, a trio of these former BN EMDs rolls downgrade at Breezy Point just west of Belmont, heading back to Crawford after pushing a BNSF coal train over the grade.
With the train looped at Dalwhinnie for a few minutes we were able to jump 66421 and the 4H47 05:05 Mossend to Inverness 'Tesco Express' intermodal and get a shot of the working from Crubenmore where the line closely follows the River Truim.

Previously unpublished shot of a juxtaposition that caught my attention - captured in January 2018.
The current 'cost of living crisis' is just the tip of the iceberg of coming problems for our society. Ukraine is basically the breadbasket of Europe and together with grain from the invading nation, Russia, we will be seeing massive shortages of staple crops and increasing food prices for all. Millions will be choosing between food and shelter or warmth. The top six energy companies in the UK made £1bn in profits last year and yet energy prices are going through the roof - my own energy bill has risen by 124% and I already strictly keep my energy use down for the sake of our planet!
There is enough wealth in this world to end poverty on this scale. When should a humane society consider that food, water, shelter and warmth are basic human necessities that everyone ought to be entitled to? Instead of taxing wealth, however, we take from the ordinary folks and the poorest suffer. I'm not expressing my politics here and you can draw no conclusions from my thoughts on that, but I am expressing my basic humanity. We are one species sharing one tiny planet in the vastness of space. Why do we not care more about our fellow humankind? When do we consider that we actually need to help each other?

A three unit helper composed of a pair of SD70ACEs bracketing an SD40-2 are at Muir, MP 127.1 on Montana Rail Link's 2nd Sub mainline and the west end of an 8685 ft passing siding. The three units are have just cut off the rear of a westbound manifest that has made the climb to the top of 5702 ft Bozeman Pass and is already in the 3652 ft summit tunnel just out of sight to the left. The helpers are starting back light headed east downhill to Livingston where a loaded coal train is awaiting their assistance for another run up the grades of the old Main Street of the Northwest.

A Utah Railway coal empty is pictured climbing into the Gilluly, Utah horseshoe the morning of Aug. 30, 1998. Minutes out of Provo, the road power experienced a locomotive failure. Two locomotives were dispatched from Martin to rescue the stalled train, waiting at Castilla. A point helper on a Utah Railway coal train is rare in the extreme. I was super lucky to catch it.

Week19:Roll of Film
First of all... of course, I successfully saved the bee right after the shot. She shook herself dry twice and then flew away. The swimming accident happened in our children's pool. I was just out in the garden looking for a suitable picture for this week. And then I saw her. I just needed one click for this moment, since it was a matter of life and death. It was a win-win situation for the bee and me. She was rescued and I had my picture for this week safe. Don't swim out so far and always keep your head up!

Rio Grande SD40T-2s No. 5390, 5345, 5342, and 5392 await assignment in Helper, Utah on May 22, 1999.
Montana Rail Link helpers cut out of a westbound BNSF freight at Elliston, Montana, on September 17, 2012. A member of the helper crew lines the switch back for the main as the helpers get in the clear, and he will direct the front half of the train back together with the rear portion.
A non-photographer friend of mine said a while ago "don't you get bored of taking sunrise shots..... they all look the same to me!!"
I'm sure most photographers would strongly disagree - most of us have seen the light change dramatically whilst taking images at just one location on the same day, transforming the scene before our eyes!!
So here's just another sunrise, just the same as every other day and location............ :-)
This was taken at Chalky Beach (near Swansea, NSW; Australia) this morning - a small swell, low tide, a faster shutter and higher ISO to capture some shape to the wave, and some nice pinks in the sky all help create the sunrise I saw this morning.....

Taken months ago before pandemic. All photos will be from my archives. I want this pandemic to end sooner than later so just doing my part and staying home. I may need a diet when this is over. Like the heron, going thru my snacks--ha, ha!
Rio Grande 5512, one of 17 SD50 units on Rio Grande's all EMD locomotive roster, leads train No. 772 through Lakota Junction, just east of Geneva Steel on a rainy April 26, 1989 in Utah County.

I've seen a lot of awesome stuff on the MRL, but this takes the cake....
The Laurel to Pasco reported they were having issues east of Lombard and weren't sure they would make Winston Hill. The dispatcher indicated there were no helpers available to run down and no other eastbounds coming and to keep making an effort to get over the hill.
As the Helena Local was finishing their work at Townsend, the dispatcher gave them the news they would be holding at Townsend for a westbound and would follow them up the hill. This gave me enough time to go to the Townsend campground to set up my tent.
Sure enough, as the Laurel to Pasco made an attempt at the hill, they slowed to a crawl and eventually required the MRL 355 and 109 approach and start to shove. Even with the extra power, the train still struggled up the hill. Eventually a "thank you" over the radio acknowledged they made it and were ready to descend into Helena... but not until the dispatcher talked the MRL 355 into the siding behind the Pasco train to meet an empty.
On a side note, the searchlights are being replaced between Logan and Helena Most of the work is done, and it is moving fast. Just a sign of the times, and soon these trains will be BNSF... sigh.
