UP 8310 and three GEs just helped a coal load climb Soldier Summit on Main 1. Here at Colton, the manned helpers have crossed over to Main 2 so they can return to Helper. Before heading down the hill, the conductor will assist the coal load in putting their train back together.

I have not traveled via bike on sand, but looking down at Bandon Beach and watching these two cruise by I found myself a bit envious. Don't get me wrong, I love talking my shoes off and walking on the beach, but sometimes it can be a bit of a slog....especially since it's easy to wander further than you planned. Getting on two wheels would help to cover more ground, while still enjoying the view. Maybe I should start shopping for some new fat tires and see if they fit on my frame.

This was the first wren to tumble out of the nest. It was very noisily calling for help, which it got. Although I saw 6 wrens fledge I only managed to photograph 3 of them, and only two successfully as the others disappeared into the undergrowth.
Rio Grande SD40T-2s No. 5386, 5405, 5342, 5385, and 5400 are ready to cut into an inbound Savage coal train at Helper, Utah on Feb. 15, 1999.
A lot has changed in Helper over the years, much of it revolving around the decline in rail traffic since the height of the Denver & Rio Grande Western days. Falling demand for coal and shifting traffic patterns after the UP takeover have reduced rail volumes considerably, UP's LROHP (Roper to Helper local) that day a microcosm of today's reality, hauling only a single hopper for the trip east. One could say a sad state of affairs; although we'd all love to see Rio Grande's 2020 leading passenger trains again in place of armor yellow, that won't be happening anytime soon. Any town that suffers a structural decline in economic activity has to try to reinvent itself, this mural attempting to depict the "new" Helper hoping to bring in some tourism dollars, while acknowledging its roots, for better or for worse.
For those that need glasses like me, the mural reads:
Welcome to Historic Helper

They look like Shovelers, but the beak colour is wrong and the female's dark chestnut head too............drawn a blank.

I was working on a dolly picture yesterday, when a little helper appeared on the scene! He is Tofu, my 6-month-old blue point Siamese kitten. Such a pretty boy!! (His sister was somewhere nearby, but she was being good--this time!--and not getting on the table.)
Maryland Midland's UBHF train gets a shove from the only two GP38-3s left on the roster as the heavy train of cement hopper loads passes a cemetery in Graceham MD on October 23, 2020.
The stray utility pole which blocks the 2061's cab a bit was once a part of the old code line for WM's block signal system through here. The main is now dark territory with little use for the utility poles that supported it and so as the cross arms rotted and fell off one by one, the pole remained. It is now serving a different purpose supporting a bluebird house which has been mounted on the south side about 4-5 feet from the ground.
I am going to make a character that I need to paint a face for, and I have not painted a face successfully at all. Do you guys have any tips for painting faces?

As I was laying in the sand photographing one of the adult Piping Plovers a couple weeks ago, I couldn't help but notice a stunning glow to my left - the sun reflecting off the New York City skyline. I glanced back at the Plover, who seemed quite content hanging out in this particular spot on the beach, so I decided I would try to shift about 90 degrees and 30 feet, without startling it, and get a photo of it with the skyline as the backdrop. Surprisingly enough, it stayed in place and continued watching me. At first I tried a very narrow aperture at f/18 to get a deeper depth of field and a more defined city, however I didn't really like the results. Taking another shot wide open, I got this beautiful bokeh. The highest glowing orb just above the Plovers head is actually the new One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower). I've never actually seen the NYC skyline before in person (somehow), at least not that I remember...this was a great first look!

"the help" .... ... yesterday Baby Jesus was born, for those who are Christians this represents an immense act of God's love for his children ... and it is to that God-Man that we often resort to asking for help .... who among us ... has never needed help ...?! .....
I photographed people I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability: I met Antonio and his girlfriend, who came to Taormina to spend the last day together, the next day Antonio will leave to go very far, unfortunately leaving his beloved, to see her again who knows when ... I met the Japanese companion of my dear friend Cesare, who flew to the sky many years ago, I knew about his companion, but I had never met her before ... I photographed a sweet Chinese girl that I met on three different occasions, each time with a little more confidence….
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved (confused-blurred-imprecise-undecided) ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus made during the shooting phase, deliberately lengthening the exposure times, and not as an effect created later, in retrospect, in the post phase -production.

Help me
I think I'm falling
In love again
When I get that crazy feeling
I know I'm in trouble again
I'm in trouble
'Cause you're a rambler and a gambler
And a sweet talking ladies man
And you love your lovin'
But not like you love your freedom
Help me
I think I'm falling
In love too fast
It's got me hoping for the future
And worrying about the past
'Cause I've seen some hot, hot blazes
Come down to smoke and ash
We love our lovin'
But not like we love our freedom
I had to search several of my field guides to help make this ID of this scruffy character... (and they weren't a lot of help). Knowing it was a Woodpecker, I judged its features compared to all of the adult birds in the overall family that I know to be regular, if not common, up here. This is the first juvenile Williamson's Sapsucker that I have imaged... or even IDed up here. The Red-napped Sapsucker juvie male is very similar... in fact it was my first ID selection. At this time of year I concentrate on juvie images... the young birds change so fast, and quality images are lacking in the usual reference sources. ( I welcome comments and/or especially corrections to these IDs.)

SP 8672 drops downgrade between Woodford and Rowen as they head west towards Bakersfield. Soon they will cut in to another heavy train and help them to the Summit in Tehachapi. Never a dull moment while watching trains in the Tehachapi Mountains.
