Trying to get some painting done before graduation next month. Amaia and Jinx get so excited whenever I get the ladder out!

A pair of EMD SD40E's lead a pair of brand new SD70ACE's(1003, 1002) downgrade through slope on a loaded coal train that will enter rose yard to cut the helpers off and await a recrew to take it east.

For Macro Mondays.

HMM!

Thank you very much for your visits, comments and faves!

Rio Grande had a penchant for accurately naming locations along the railroad. One such place was Helper, UT. Rio Grande added helpers to heavy westbound trains for the climb to Soldier Summit. 5345 and two sisters have just been added to a heavy MNYRO and will be headed west soon.

"the help" .... ... yesterday Baby Jesus was born, for those who are Christians this represents an immense act of God's love for his children ... and it is to that God-Man that we often resort to asking for help .... who among us ... has never needed help ...?! .....

I photographed people I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability: I met Antonio and his girlfriend, who came to Taormina to spend the last day together, the next day Antonio will leave to go very far, unfortunately leaving his beloved, to see her again who knows when ... I met the Japanese companion of my dear friend Cesare, who flew to the sky many years ago, I knew about his companion, but I had never met her before ... I photographed a sweet Chinese girl that I met on three different occasions, each time with a little more confidence….

these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved (confused-blurred-imprecise-undecided) ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus made during the shooting phase, deliberately lengthening the exposure times, and not as an effect created later, in retrospect, in the post phase -production.

Whilst i was taking this shot there were creepy groaning noises from the corridor at the top of the stairs which helped the mood no end.I went up ready to see what was making the noise when a rush of wind coursed through the corridor and I realised it was just the breeze groaning through the grates over the windows.

I shared a shot of the three at work a couple of days ago. This was the return trip, as they drift down Steelton Hill and back to Pokegema to wait for their next trip up the hill.

Outbound Keolis/MBTA train 403 cruises west headed to Wachusett from North Station as they pass through HILLS interlocking on Main 1 at MP 17.7 on the Fitchburg Line. This location is just west of the Lincoln station on this once important Boston and Maine freight route that now sees only commuter trains. F40PH-3C 1025 is passing GP40MC 1137 that is marooned on the set out spur. It suffered a traction motors fire the prior day and are awaiting the wreck crew to arrive with the crane and an idler axle so the offending wheel set can be removed and the it can be safely towed back to BET for evaluation and repair.

I just moved into a new apartment. Not the one pictured, but one with a lot of white walls, and a policy that doesn't allow pets! How am I suppose to fulfill my destiny of being a crazy cat man?

Lately I have been feeling trapped, or restricted by the walls I put up. When I feel this way I have to remind myself that I can change the way I think. I can be hopeful, and determined. Rather than pitiful, and gloomy, which leads to stress eating chocolate bars! I've learned that whatever it is I may be struggling with, to not be afraid to call for help.

Unlike their close relatives Coots, Moorhen do not have lobed toes to facilitate swimming (I have pasted a Coot photo in the comments below for comparison). You can see here that Moorhens have long, thin, green toes, and it was actually the green colouration of the legs that gave rise to its scientific name chloropus, meaning green-footed. Moorhens do quite a few unusual things at nesting time. They usually start to incubate when they lay the first egg, so in a clutch of seven the young will hatch over a period of about seven days. But oddly for subsequent broods they wait for the full clutch before incubating so the young hatch together. This is odd because the young are nidifugous (means nest-fleeing) in that they walk around as soon as they hatch, so it is difficult for parents to look after different aged young while they continue incubating. Another unusual thing is that the young of the first brood stick around to help their parents raise the siblings in subsequent broods. This is quite rare in birds, although House Martins also do it.

To long on this road,

My friend,

To long between the rides,

To long – but I’m heading home,

This time without you by my side.

And yes there’s something bout

The sad song’s – to ease away the pain,

So I’ll sing on up a storm tonight

As I’m all alone again.

Too few now, stop to pass the time,

The few that do draw a line,

It’s such a disconcerting time,

Guess that’s how it’s to be.

Misinformed, misdirected, but

I’m sure I paid the price for

This emotional investment.

Don’t misunderstand me ,

It’s just I’ve got nothing more

Than what I gave.

And the blue bitters

Are here again,

How long are they to stay.

Just help me meet the morning

Sun Lord,

And I’ll head on for

the day…….

Taken with my tiny Chuzhao Miniature TLR Digital Camera

The last of my Glacier images from this summer. I'm using this image, which is a Marc Adamus compstomp, to ask all my contacts for a little help. I would never make it as a professional photographer partly because I feel pretty uncomfortable promoting myself, which is as important to being successful in this business as actually shooting good pictures. When I see the work of some of the real talents out there in Landscape Photography, I can be honest with myself about where I stand in the grand scheme of things.... and it makes me thankful that I have another source of income so I don't starve. :)

I may not have much confidence in my own work, but I WILL brag about recognizing those photographers who are really exceptional. I ran into Ian Plant and Joe Rossbach in Canyonlands while they were teaching a workshop last year. Familiar with the immense talent they possess behind the lens, I was struck by their friendly demeanor and good nature. Ian was good enough to share some advice with me when I was shooting slot canyons for the first time, and I've assimilated tons of useful information through his daily photo blog. In short, as astounding a photographer as he is, he's a better man.

It has come to my attention that Ian is in the running for a trip to the North Pole. I'm selfishly asking for your help in sending him on his way. I say selfishly because I really REALLY want to see the amazing images he comes back with. Take a look at what he did in Patagonia, and you will see what I mean. For Christmas, if you want to get me something (I'm an extra-large, by the way), I would really appreciate it if you would go HERE, register, and vote to send Ian on this trip. I guarantee you will be pleased with the results.

This is the last image from my family Glacier trip this summer. Ryan showed me this spot after I begged him for a few months, and we spent several days here trying to get decent light. Steve and I shot this mere minutes before we were enveloped in thick fog for over an hour. It dawned on me about 30 minutes after getting socked in that this was the very same location that a bear poked his head up behind that tree when Steve, Ryan, and Jesse were here the year before. This made me nervous, as we couldn't see 10 feet in front of us for quite some time. I would like to personally apologize to the mountain goats that came roaming up their goat path. Apparently they don't like bear spray in their eyes, but hey, all paw/hoof steps sound the same to me when you can't see anything!

Yes, this is a composite. I zoomed in on the moon because at 16mm it looked like the lint I occasionally find in my belly button. Back to work. Thanks for making 2010 such a great year.

I guess I'm not supposed to put my website address here, so it's in My Profile if anyone cares.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday!

I saw this photo again on Facebook. I absolutely love this shot. The subject matter is heartwarming. Incredible lighting adds to the grace and beauty of this shot.

The problem is, I would love to know who took the shot! Maybe it's even a painting, I don't know. I've tried using any means I know of to try and have come up empty, though I see the image on a lot of sites.

Anyone out there have the answer?

An unfortunate Ichneumon Wasp with an unidentified spider. Last September (2016) I spent three hours or more watching and photographing this battle, taking over more than 100 photos. The wasp gave a good fight trying to break loose but lost in the end. I wanted to help it loose but have learned not to mess with nature. Fortunately the background was light and uncluttered which made it easier to photograph them.

This was the first wren to tumble out of the nest. It was very noisily calling for help, which it got. Although I saw 6 wrens fledge I only managed to photograph 3 of them, and only two successfully as the others disappeared into the undergrowth.
