While the Galapagos is not really a "scenic" destination, being a volcanic archipelago on the Pacific ocean does provide some interesting landscapes. The island of Floreana has the added colorful history of being rich with legends and mysteries.

Legend holds that the Galapagos Island Tortoise can perceive the intentions of human visitors to its home, dispensing a powerful curse if the tortoise believes those intents to be harmful. History provides us with an elegant example of this curse in the story of Thomas Chappel, helmsman for the doomed Nantucket whaler, Essex. In 1820, while visiting what is now known as Floreana, Chappel set a fire that burned the entire island down to the rock and was responsible for the extinction of several species. Only a short time later, the Essex would be attacked and sunk by a sperm whale, setting off the tragic series of events immortalized in Melville’s Moby Dick.

Three more sensational stories involving sex, murder, and mystery occured on Floreana in the early 1930's: "The Adam and Eve of the Galapagos", "The Swiss Family Robinson of the Galapagos", and "The Baroness of the Galapagos".

Steel fishing vessel Bonanza II or, Asleep at the Wheel

What may well be one of the last photos taken of the Bonanza II.

Of 110 tons gross she was built in Ulladulla, NSW in 1981 and originally rigged as a tuna purse seiner - hence the crows nest. She was later converted to deep water trawl for the orange roughy pillage-fest of the late 80’s/90’s.

The vessel ran aground and sank off South East Cape on January 2, 1989. The helmsman was asleep at the wheel. Crew all got off safely.

This frame must be only a week or so before she was wrecked as we both punched a stiff south easterly breeze eastward along the south coast of Tasmania. She overtook us at full speed while making heavy going of the conditions.

The beginning of an historic flight to the North Pole. The airship Norge left Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard, Norway) on May 11, 1926 with Roald Amundsen and the ship´s designer Umberto Nobile aboard. My colorization of Anders B. Wilse´s photo in the Oslo Museum.

"The Norge was a semi-rigid Italian-built airship that carried out the first verified trip of any kind to the North Pole, an overflight on 12 May 1926. It was also the first aircraft to fly over the polar ice cap between Europe and America. The expedition was the brainchild of polar explorer and expedition leader Roald Amundsen, the airship's designer and pilot Umberto Nobile and American adventurer and explorer Lincoln Ellsworth who, along with the Aero Club of Norway, financed the trip, which was known as the Amundsen-Ellsworth 1926 Transpolar Flight." --

"The 16-man expedition included Amundsen, the expedition leader and navigator; Umberto Nobile the dirigible's designer and pilot; Wealthy American outdoorsman, polar explorer and expedition sponsor Lincoln Ellsworth; as well as polar explorer Oscar Wisting who served as helmsman. Other crew members were 1st Lt. Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen, navigator; 1st Lt. Emil Horgen, elevatorman; Capt. Birger Gottwaldt, radio expert, Dr Finn Malmgren of Uppsala University, meteorologist; Fredrik Ramm, journalist; Frithjof Storm-Johnsen, radioman; Flying Lt. Oscar Omdal, flight engineer; Natale Cecioni, chief mechanic; Renato Alessandrini, rigger; Ettore Arduino, Attilio Caratti and Vincenzo Pomella, mechanics. Nobile's little dog, Titina, also came aboard as mascot.

On 12 May at 01:25 (GMT) the Norge reached the North Pole, at which point the Norwegian, American and Italian flags were dropped from the airship onto the ice. Relations between Amundsen and Nobile, which had never been very friendly, were further strained by the freezing and noisy conditions in the dirigible's cramped control car, and became even worse when Amundsen saw that the Italian flag dropped was larger than either of the others. Amundsen later recalled with scorn that under Nobile, the Norge had become "a circus wagon of the skies".

After crossing the pole, ice encrustations kept growing on the airship's propellers to such an extent that pieces breaking and flying off would strike the outer cover, causing rips and tears in the fabric.

The ice forming on the propellers as we went through the fog, and hurled against the underside of the bag, had pretty well scarred up the fabric covering the keel, though it had not opened up the gas bags or caused any hydrogen loss. We had used up all our cement in repairing the fabric..."

On 14 May, the Norge reached the Inupiat village of Teller, Alaska, where in view of worsening weather, the decision was made to land rather than continue the approximately 70 miles to Nome. The airship was reportedly damaged somehow during the landing and was dismantled and shipped back to Italy."

THE PALINURO IS AGAIN IN BACINO DI SAN MARCO IN VENICE....

The ship has two main missions: contribute to Cadets training and promote the image of the Italian Navy. In fact the unit hosts summer training campaigns for the Taranto Italian Navy Petty Officers School where the students can experience an intense training programme onboard, including seafaring, safety and security, navigation techniques. During her stops at national and international ports, the unit promotes the legacy of the oldest and most prestigious traditions of Italian seafaring.

In Roman mythology and especially Virgil's Aeneid, Palinurus, was the helmsman of Aeneas's ship, appraised for his dedication, faithfulness and skills.

The Italian training ship Palinuro is a three-masted barquentine used as an educational sailing vessel for the Italian Navy. Palinuro is named after Palinurus, the famous helmsman of Aeneas' ship (after the fall of Troy, the defeated Trojans circumnavigated him). Palinurus is considered a prototype of an experienced navigator or guide.

The ferry crew would comprise a captain/helmsman, engineer and two seamen to tie the boat up, to raise and lower the ramp and to help with the loading of the vehicles. The 'Hope' was built at Kelliebank Shipyard, Alloa, in 1905.

"...we parted green from green,

we sought further thickets,

we dipped our ankles

through leaf-mould and earth,

and wood and wood-bank enchanted us."

Hilda Doolittle (1886-1961)

The aqueduct at Pontcysyllte near Llangollen in North Wales carries the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee. It was built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop and was completed in 1805. It is the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain, a Grade I-Listed Building and a World Heritage Site. The aqueduct is 1,007 ft (307 m) long, 11 ft (3.4 m) wide and 5.25 ft (1.60 m) deep. It consists of a cast iron trough supported 126 ft (38 m) above the river on iron arched ribs carried on nineteen hollow masonry piers (pillars). Each span is 53 ft (16 m) wide.

The trough sides rise only about 6 inches (15 cm) above the water level, less than the depth of freeboard of an empty narrow boat, so the helmsman of the boat has no visual protection from the impression of being at the edge of an abyss.

Between the Anchors, (nothing to port and nothing to starboard).

Something similar would have been ordered to the helmsman whilst sailing through Hoxa Sound between the headlands.

A binnacle is a waist-high case or stand on the deck of a ship, generally mounted in front of the helmsman, in which navigational instruments are placed for easy and quick reference as well as to protect the delicate instruments.

This one is owned by a resident on our campus who’s a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He bought it at an antique store some years ago. It’s from an 18th Century tall ship.

I shot this in his living room, and created and added the background in processing.

Visited the Magic Kingdom during Labor Day weekend and finally got a shot of this guy at Pirates that I actually like @ 200mm. Wish I pushed pass 3200ISO for this to get some more details in the shadows, but this will do for now I guess!

Legendary Norwegian boat constructor Johan Anker (1871 - 1940) posing in 1928 on board the new 12-Metre class boat Magda XI, which he had designed for businessman Alfred W.G. Larsen (the man on the right).

Both men were excellent sailors. Already in 1912 Larsen´s 12-Metre yacht Magda IX - designed by Anker - won the gold medal in the Stockholm Summer Olympics, with Anker as helmsman and Larsen among the crew. During his lifetime Larsen owned altogether thirteen 10-Metre, 12-Metre and 15-Metre boats, all of them named Magda, which was the name of his first wife.

In the early 1930s Larsen sold Magda XI (with sail number N -7) to the US, where she was renamed Cantitoe (sail number was US-7).

The only mention of her in the US I found in the New York Times August 7, 1933: "American Y.C. RUN IS LED BY CANTITOE, 12-Meter Yacht"

The International 12-Metre Association data page mentions that Cantitoe was "wrecked and buried", but does not give any date.

Jadran Palace or Adria Palace is a symbol of Rijeka's maritime power, the headquarters of the leading shipping company Jadrolinija.

The palace was built in 1897 for the shipping company "Adria", with Hungarian-American capital. It is located in a prominent position, one monumental facade dominates the view of the entire port, and the other Jadranski trg. The building represents an elegant selection of High Renaissance decoration. While on the central elevations of the main facades, the tendency towards monumentality is visible in the large columns, which on the side facing the sea bear allegorical figures of sailors (captain, helmsman, engineer and pilot), towards the square are symbols of the four continents (Japanese, Egyptian, Indian and European). The extraordinary sculptures are the work of sculptor Sebastian Bonomi. In the vision of every seafarer, Rijeka shipping is identified with this monumental building, which was founded by Rijeka architect Francesco Mattiassi and built by Giacomo Zammattio.

-----------------------

Soúnio has been a sacred site since very ancient times. The "sanctuary of Sounion" is first mentioned in the Odyssey, as the place where Menelaus stopped during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman, Phrontes Onetorides.

Archaeological evidence has shown that there were two organized places of worship on the cape by the 7th century BC: a sanctuary of Poseidon at the southern edge and a sanctuary of Athena about 500 m to the northeast.

The Lushan Mountains, in Jiangxi north of Nanchang, housed one of Mao Zedong's residences.

With a swimming pool and an exceptional environment, it was only occupied for 135 days by the Grand Helmsman. Currently transformed into a museum, it retains the imprint of its illustrious occupant.

On this picture, it is indicated:

"In 1959, 1961 and 1970, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held three meetings at Mount Lushan, and Mao Zedong also visited Mount Lushan three times, staying there a total of 135 days. During the meeting, Mao Zedong used a large number of books. The photo shows it in 1959."
