On my way back from Oregon I decided instead of going straight to the North to turn to the East at Rock Castle to see Mt St Helens and meadows with beautiful flowers. I spent great time there meeting wonderful people and enjoying the beauty of this scenic area.

Seriously. The image looks better when viewed in Lightbox.
This is a view of the crater at Mt. St. Helens from the Johnson Ridge Observatory. The lighting was changing quickly as clouds were zipping by. This is the long shot of the view from the ridge. This shot shows a good close up of the mound growing inside the crater. About a eighteen months after this shot was taken, the growing mound spewed ash and steam. That was the first time it showed activity in about twenty seven years.
It was a pleasure to have Helen over for her first ever makeover. We had fun trying out different looks and hair on her and we’re lovin’ the results! 😍

Washington series: Mount St. Helens.
I'm old enough to remember the news when Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980. This eruption remains the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. Fifty-seven people were killed; 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed. A massive debris avalanche, triggered by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, caused a lateral eruption that reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 ft to 8,363 ft, leaving a 1 mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater which you can see in this picture taken from the Spirit Lake Highway. We wanted to drive up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory for the best view of the crater, but unfortunately the last 10 miles of the highway were closed due to a landslide.

The Chantry, a ruin dating back to the 15th century, built in the 1435 by Sir Thomas Gerard. The Chantry is the oldest building in St Helens. It was closed in the reformation and fell into decay during the civil war. It was officially used as a graveyard from the 18th century.
Mt St Helens. From Spirit Lake 1962. After erruption this view would be directly into the crater. Spirit Lake was buried under more than 200 feet of ash & mud flow but still exists with a different shoreline.
