“I remember my childhood names for grasses and secret flowers. I remember where a toad may live and what time the birds awaken in the summer -- and what trees and seasons smelled like -- how people looked and walked and smelled even. The memory of odors is very rich.”
“Sometimes in the summer evenings they walked up the hill to watch the afterglow clinging to the tops of the western mountains and to feel the breeze drawn into the valley by the rising day-heated air. Usually they stood silently for a while and breathed in peacefulness."
― John Steinbeck, East of Eden
We have been feeding over 30 Anna's Hummingbirds this Winter. We have seven heated feeders, as some of the feeders they share, and others only one controls. We had 23 degree weather, snow, and 55 mph gusts of wind. To keep up with the windchill we have 15 watt bulbs, handwarmers and socks to shield the nectar from freezing. My husband put brackets below the feeders so we can zip tie the feeders to help eliminate some of the swinging motion. As many of you know, our Anna's Hummingbirds do not migrate during the Winter months. Photo taken in our backyard in Camas, Washington.

With the frigid temperatures. The heated birdbath attracts so many different birds.Today I was lucky to see the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and his friends. I grabbed the camera and was able to get a few shots through the door before it flew away.

The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion. It is approximately 1500 light years away. Bright emission nebula IC 434 is seen behind the Horsehead Nebula. IC 434 glows red with ionized hydrogen gas, which is heated from nearby stars.
This is a common target for amateur astrophotographers. This is the first time I've shot it at this focal length. I was hoping for a bit more detail, but it's a little challenging from my location at 36 deg N latitude.
Image acquired with SBIG ST-8300 monochrome CCD camera through TPO 8" Ritchey-Chretien telescope at 1600mm focal length. Total of exposure time of 7 hours, 20 min. Image is a blend of hydrogen alpha (Ha) and RGB filtered exposures. Shot from bright suburban location in Jamestown, NC.
The heated birdbath is a must in the winter time. We have been getting 100's at a time of Cowbirds like this female coming to the feeders and then to the bath for a drink. It was in the 40's so I went out on the deck with Bandit for a while. Lots of kisses from my happy boy. My backyard. Central Bucks, PA.
Taken at Nong Han Kumphawpi Lake by Jade K.oltai -- It was just me and the wild life here, was very nice.
Thank you Jade for creating places to recharge.

Sleeping in a pod heated by a wood burning stove means probably getting up at night to add a log or two. Limited transport in the camp means that you have to walk from reception to your pod. This is part of the Whitepod experience. Just like walking in a silent forest, enjoying local cuisine or enjoying private ski slopes. Discover a unique experience where nature is luxury.

. . . If you are going to make mud, Norris Geyser Basin Fountain Paint Pots have the perfect Recipe!
The mixture of super heated water underground, volcanic rock to trap it, small cracks in those rocks, and water from snow and ice above to mix with the soil makes perfect mud!
Oh and to watch that mud bubble and throw little pieces of mud a few feet in the air . . . just a joy to watch!

Push and shove, go 'head and take your aim
We better duck 'cause right now nobody's safe
And we could grow up, but it's no fun that way
And so we treat love like it's a Nintendo game
But nobody wins
Once home to Healy's Pharmacy, this corner building at Massachusetts Avenue and 3rd Street, N.W. was built in 1890 by Julius Germuiller, a son of German immigrants.
This structure—long vacant and now surrounded by huge new buildings—is typical of hundreds of houses and commercial buildings in late 19th-century Washington that were built by this Washington-born German-American architect/builder, the son of German immigrants and parishioners at St. Mary's Church.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Ray Milefsky, we now know considerably more about Germuiller's life and career.
For several years, the mortar and pestle on the rooftop disappeared. It's good to see it has returned to the building.

Egon, my Norwegian Forest Cat, after a night in his electric heated house. Breakfast is waiting. He used this house for 12-13 years. He can sleep inside, but he loves to be outside even in the hardest and coldest winters day or night.
He is built for winter.......
During Wednesday's wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain the heated bath was among the most popular areas in my backyard. What's better than a warm bath on a cold wintry day!
She monopolizes it most of the time! However, I have another one that I will have to get out and put somewhere else, since our weather has now (finally) turned cool.

I was sitting at my desk yesterday and Ella was taking a bath on her heated mat (under the dirty blue pillowcase). She froze and just stared at me looking like the silly goofball that she is.
I recognized this as a perfect moment with Ella and wished time would stand still. At the moment, all three pets are healthy and happy and I want them all to stay that way.
I posted this photo on Instagram and a Flickr friend, Fardo, commented, "Savor the moment. This kind of perfection is what life is about." She is so right.
We all need to savor the good moments.

Jeremiah 51:39 “When they are heated, I will prepare their drink, and I will make them drunken, that they may exult, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith Jehovah.”
Gentle persistent rain. At first it feels OK but you gradually get soaking wet.
A bit like a "frog in hot water".
Urban myth has it that if you put a frog in a pot of boiling water it will instantly leap out. But if you put it in a pot filled with pleasantly tepid water and gradually heat it, the frog will remain in the water until it boils to death. Allegedly, the frog is not able to detect the gradual increase in temperature until it's too late.
The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of sinister threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly.
According to modern biologists the premise is false: changing location is a natural thermoregulation strategy for frogs and other ectotherms, and is necessary for survival in the wild. A frog that is gradually heated will jump out. Furthermore, a frog placed into already boiling water will die immediately, not jump out.
