Macro Mondays 24/10/17 theme Spiral

For this theme i decided to stay away from premade spirals and create my own.I had the idea for creating the spiral from carving wood with a sculpting chisel after hanging a new door and chiseling out the frame for the hinges. But trying to get a long and small enough spiral proved a little more difficult as it kept on breaking off.So I heated the wood in a microwave which dried it making the spiral stronger. The whole scene is about 1 inches and the spiral was about 1/2 inches. For lighting I used two speedlites, one on the camera with the bounce card pointing at the spiral and the other pointed at the side of the spiral and the background.

A little bit of Norway in Texas. Immigrants from Norway first began settling in Bosque County in the mid-1800s. With strong ties to its Norwegian heritage, the church and nearby community retained use of Norwegian as the primary language well into the 1900s.

St. Olaf’s Kirke (Church) was built in 1886 by architect Andrew Mickelson and his brothers, Christian and Ole Mickelson to serve the Norwegian immigrants of the area. It was built with local limestone from which it became known locally as “The Rock Church”. The church is now used only for special services.

The church has neither running water nor electricity, and is heated by an old wood-burning stove. Both the stove and the Vocalion Reed Pump Organ were manufactured before 1900. The hand-painted finish on the pews mimic more expensive wood. Pews, floors, and light fixtures are all original. A beautiful carved wooden reredos (altar screen) stands behind the altar with the pulpit in the center above the altar.

After a long and arduous hike in through deep snow we had arrived at Seamans Hut and went about setting up our campsite and enjoying a truly stunning afternoon. There hadn’t been a breath of wind and with the temperature only just below zero we were very comfortable.

Once the sun set we fired up our small gas cookers and heated up some dinner. When you’re in the mountains and bereft of common comforts such as light and TV time seems to really slow down and the evening was still young.

There are countless reasons why I love to escape city life. Amongst the many however, there is one which never ceases to impress me – that is, the colossal night sky. Away from the bright lights the magnificence of the universe becomes undeniably amazing.

With the last light of the day finally gone the show had begun, above us was one huge sky and in front of me was one beautiful alpine hut that was so coincidently positioned perfectly below a quickly emerging milky way.

The temperature was dropping fast and i had a warm sleeping bag and good book calling my name so I fired off this last shot and said good night to a perfect day ✨

We had weather with 15 degrees and winds at 60 mph! The wind chill was incredible. The weather was absolutely brutal, and the Heated Hummingbird Feeders kept freezing! Our solution was to cover the feeders with a fuzzy sock and add hand warmers (4 to each feeder). We also used a 15 Watt incandescent bulb (instead of the recommended 7 Watt bulb). I have six heated feeders (four are undercover). We had about 50 to 60 Anna's Hummingbirds during this cold snap. The winds were so strong that it kept blowing them off of the feeders. Thankfully, we are above freezing and the ice is melting we are experiencing a heat wave at 40 degrees.

Nothing thrilling - except Mack isn't wearing an e-collar, both are sleeping on their heated mats with snacks within arms reach, both are healthy and both are right where I can see them as I work at my desk. This is what peace looks like at home.

Happy Caturday: Peaceful

Heated bird bath has grown some icicles during this last sleet storm.

Research shows that more than 100 million years ago, molten liquid, heated by the continuous movement of Earth’s crust, flowed upward to the surface. As it cooled, it created fascinating rocky landscapes found in Joshua Tree National Park.

My heated bird bath brings all kinds of birds into my yard. I like the way the light caught this fellow. The last few days it’s been extremely cold and I feel for these creatures.

Well today's "explored shots" on Flickr was dominated by flowers - so I thought I would post one.

Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) grow well in centrally heated rooms and have long-lasting flowers produced all year round.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

Unfortunately, the light and angle on these birds was never ideal enough to get any detail on their eyes; however it was still cool to see their brightly colored feet and beaks.

One. We are still in a severe drought. Two, with what water there is, it's frozen. The heated birdbath is so welcomed in my backyard. Central Bucks, PA.

The mineral green geothermally heated waters of the Roman Bath reflect the 18th century buildings & sky above. Located in Bath, UK, these hot springs contain 42 minerals including sodium, calcium, chloride, sulphate, bicarbonate, magnesium, silicon, & iron. From ancient times they were considered to be healing & many pilgrims came to make use of them.

I have a heated cat mat that Ella absolutely loves. But Jimmy is aging pretty rapidly and he suddenly wanted to nap on the heated mat. I have pathetic photos of Jimmy napping on the heated mat with Ella, who doesn't really care all that much for Jimmy or for Mack, resting just her paws on the heated mat while Jimmy napped on it.

So I bought a second heated mat. And so here you have it. Ella has claimed the original heated mat on a bookcase next to a window. Jimmy has claimed the new heated at and Mack, who has plenty of body fat and doesn't need a heated mat, naps on the Jets fleece.

Happy Caturday: Naptime.

PS. It's been a long week. I wanted to post a photo for Happy Caturday but am off to bed. I'll comment in the morning!!

Ever seen a thermal waterfall? Hot stuff!

Hilary Stewart writes, "One day in April, not long after I moved to Quadra, a friend on the island...phones me. "A couple of us are going swimming in the river.... Would you like to join us?"

"The river?" I say in disbelief. "You're crazy, it's much too cold for swimming."

"No," she replies, "it'll be warm." ... "It's heated."

"What's heated?" I ask.

"The pool," she replies.

"A heated pool in the river?" ...

"Yes," Bab says.

"What 'pool' are you talking about?"

"The swimming pool ... over in Capbell River," she says.

Then I understand. I'm still so new to Quadra that I don't know that islanders refer to the town across the water as "the River." In turn, the inhabitants there refer to Quadra Island as "the Rock."
