i am heartbroken today because i found out my friend is gone. he was a wonderful chef, a great friend and i'll miss him sorely.

he gave me bourdain's "kitchen confidential" years ago and hooked me on him. he called me two weeks ago to tell me he was moving back to the area. he was always great to hang out with and talk to. he was the coolest part of my parents' and sister's first visit to new york. we went to his restaurant and he came out to meet them and he made them special hors d'oeuvres and everyone wondered who we were that the chef was out of the kitchen to talk to us and bring us food himself.

i can't believe he's gone.

This is difficult to post but I need to make myself do it. I found out Wednesday (kind of accidentally) that Cosmo has lung cancer. I'm heartbroken to say the least and just hope that he stays well enough that we'll still have a few months together.

I noticed Tuesday evening that he was kind of nursing one of his paws and it looked a little swollen so I though he might have sprained it or gotten bit something in the basement. I brought him to the vet Wednesday morning and they did some x-rays of his paw and saw that he had a condition called "hypertrophic osteopathy" which manifests in the paws of cats or dogs that are suffering from lung cancer. This was confirmed by lung x-rays (although it techincally is a presumptive diagnosis).

There's no real way of saying how much longer I will have him here but I don't think it will be more than a few months (if I am very lucky and if he is as strong as I think he is). He's 14 and I don't want to put him through the agony of getting a biopsy or chemotherapy or even a second opinion. I saw the x-rays with my own eyes and it's clear. He has small nodules spread out in his lungs and there is no way to go in and get them out. Thankfully, although there are a few things going on that we do need to treat (loss of appetite, general "not feeling great" and the hypertrophic osteopathy), he doesn't appear to be suffering any pain from the cancer. The other things we can treat with some prednisone and then gauge how he's progressing.

Right now I'm nursing him back from the stress of Wednesday and the drugs they had to use to sedate him for the chest x-rays. He was back at the vet today because he was dehydrated and not boucning back like he should so my vet (who is wonderful) gave him subcutaneous fluids and a stronger injection of prednisone (vs. the pills I gave him yesterday) and I'm happy to say that several hours later, I can see a difference. I'm hoping to see continued improvement as we go through the weekend. I really need him to get his appetite back. That would be a very good thing.

This is a picture I took a few weeks ago that I hadn't gotten around to posting yet but I love his face in it. He's such a special cat, I can't imagine him not being here.

I'm heartbroken to reveal the location of the The Yard. However, they haven given me sooooo much material over the last 6 months – and I have such high hopes for them, out of respect – that I'm pleased to say The Bunker Thrift Store is now open for business at 261 NE 73rd St, East Bohemia (also known as the Little Haiti Miami area).
