I'm not too sentimental about cars, but there are a couple of exceptions and this is one.
Feel free to read my odd, yet informative blog - the blogging equivalent of mixed nuts:
When we unceremoniously dissolved our relationship with the Jetta, my wife decided she was done owning crap. While we had previously purchased the brand new Intrepid RS for her, it too turned out to be crap so this was going to be a pretty high bar.
I was heartbroken to get rid of the 45mpg Jetta, but not heartbroken to get rid of buying diesel, and had no intention of going back. So this meant we were in the market for a mildly used car that got something in the high 30s+mpg. My positive experience with the Highlander was making me considerably more open to hybrid cars or even fully electric, although we couldn't afford any of those. The resale value of most foreign cars that don't suck is annoyingly
high. Enter our savior, Ford? Yeah, I know, surprised me too.
The gen2 Ford Fusion has been sought-after since Ford had the brilliant insight to finally make a car that looked good. It came in 4 or 5 packages with a couple being hybrids. Unlike the '06 Highlander Hybrid which only uses its battery-powered engine to start rolling the car from a stop (and to add some punch when you would like to go faster now), the Fusion will run full battery power until you use up half the juice, reserving the rest for slow/parking lot driving and additional power for speeding up. The ads for the car listed it as being able to go roughly 20 miles on a full charge. When we got the car, we were very disappointed to see that it was really only able to go about 12. We had the insight at one point to take the car to a dealer to have them do some listed recall repairs and when we got it back, its battery range had magically jumped up to 21 miles.
I found the car in a dealership in Michigan and talked to them several times before we drove out to pick it up. The salesman was pretty surprised that we would travel that far for a car. I told him it wasn't the first time.
This car was the absolute top-of-the-line loaded with all the toys model of Energi. It included the dumbest of all add-ons, the assisted park feature. This beauty would parallel park the car for you at the touch of a button using the 8000 +/- sensors that surrounded the body. I personally never got up the nerve to try it because, you know, car loan.. and I don't think anyone else in my family ever did either.
This car never became mine. It was great to drive, had plenty of power on battery or gas, and was super comfy. I got about 42mpg when I drove it but found that my wife has a slightly heavier foot than I do as she would consistently get in the high 30s. At some point we were heading somewhere in the car; the first time I had ridden in it in some time. I pointed out this really bad noise and asked when that started. After listening to it the whole trip I scheduled an appointment to have the transmission checked. Sure enough, Ford strikes again. We had had the car for three years at that point. The tranny place was surprisingly honest with me and said, you should get rid of this car now. I left and started my search. We were both enthralled with this car and still could not find something, that we could afford, that would compete with it, so we did the dumbest thing we could think of and we traded this one in at a local dealer for a newer one.

The overnight shower had left the soil tender beneath the forest floor and I wondered lying there if the soil felt as sore as I do when I am heartbroken. Today however, I had to promptly get rid of the thought because I was out there to heal myself. My therapy was going well. One cannot beat the therapeutics of earth smell mixed wizardly with the aroma of everything else on that healing bed. That was till she interrupted. In her pinkish-purple outfit, the stunning enigma was alone, very close to me and very beautiful. My eyes refused to look anywhere else and I felt inebriated. The intoxication crept up to my soul when the wind picked up a melody and she broke into a shimmering dance without a damn care for the eventual. I knew she lives for three days only and here she was living her days like withering away was only a hypothetical possibility. In the softest whisper she said, ‘Life is meant to be lived, not survived… you know that don’t you?’ And then she smiled and broke into another tango with the wind. I crawled up closer to her and snuggled. I wanted her to know that she had mended an utterly flawed man who felt heartbroken no more.

My nephew was stillborn at 35 weeks on July 31. My family is heartbroken.
My brother and sister-in-law had chosen a Lion King/jungle theme for their nursery and I had picked up a bunch of Cotton + Steel fabrics to make something after the baby was born. I ended up embroidering a little piece from the fabric for his parents instead. I'm not an angel kind of person, but it seemed like the thing to do. Sometimes you stitch for art, and sometimes you stitch for therapy.
They did not know the sex of their child prior to his birth, and had jokingly referred to him as Bart, but once he was born they could not imagine giving him any other name. The back is all wonky but it doesn't matter.
Our beloved 28 year old Daddy Bear returned to China on 10/29/2018.
We are heartbroken to see him return but at the same time happy for him. He returns to China after 15 successful years at the San Diego Zoo. He sired 5 beautiful cubs with Bai Yun all through natural breeding. He is the only male panda who can claim this in the USA.
So very proud of him, he traveled well ( he is quite good at taking naps) and was out exploring his new beautiful home on day one in China.
I now have to make my travel plans to China, gotta see this guy again.

I saw this girl in NYC, it broke my heart. At the time I was on a bus and couldn't get off. We spent 2 hours walking around looking for her. She looked like she was deeply upset. She was shaking from crying.
I was struck by the huge amount of homeless people there was in NYC, in fact in all the cities we visited in the USA there was a lot of homeless people.
This girl still haunts me, I wish I could have given her some money...
We lost our beloved dachshund the day after Thanksgiving 2014. It has been such a hard year without him! We got him when he was 6 weeks old and lost him at 14 3/4 :) The best darned weiner dog we've ever had, the only but who's counting?! Our poor boy was sick and needed relief.. Oscar had the best life being loved by SO many. We miss him all the time and I find days where I wish he was here to cuddle for selfish reasons. I never thought I'd love an animal as much as this guy. You're my boy Osco!

The people that remained, are heartbroken, all they had has been lost. In conversation with them, it becomes clear that PTSD has set in, as despite their best efforts to salvage what is left, there is very little to build upon. They are without power, water, roofs, and in many cases any of their belongings. One resident pictured here, Eliseo Nunez Ruiz (first image) told us he was doing his best to not visualize his own suicide, but he felt he was losing the battle.
One of the days, we followed some local health care workers to Toa Baja City, a area on the northern coast, built on the alluvial deposits of the three rivers that flow nearby. There isn’t much intellectualization that can describe what happened there, and the only words that come to mind is destruction. Pure and absolute. Flood waters rose 15-20 feet, filling first then the second floor (second image). Many of the residents have just left, the keys sit in the flooded cars, the homes emptied, doors left open, plants begin to grow over everything and bulldozers just push the destroyed remnants of people’s belongings into piles so more disaster relief crews can move through the streets. This past week, I had the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico with the World Health Organization to do some documentation of the post hurricane recovery. It was a short trip, just a few days really, and in such a short period of time, doing justice to any experience or telling of someone else’s experience is fraught with ignorance and assumptions. There are elements you can learn from being in conversation with people, and some you can from witnessing, but there is also a language of heart that goes beyond the words and thoughts. Now 70 days past the devastating hurricane, the immediate trauma has past, and the long-term work of repair is setting in.
Posted @withregram • @worldbirdsanctuary The World Bird Sanctuary is heartbroken to share the passing of Murphy, our bald eagle and extraordinary foster dad. Murphy was found deceased in his aviary early morning of Saturday March 15th as we checked on our animals after storms and tornadoes came through St. Louis the night before. Our veterinarian performed a necropsy which showed that Murphy had sustained trauma to his head. We are unable to determine if Murphy was spooked and hit his head while jumping off a perch or if wind and precipitation played a part in the injury. While Murphy experienced countless storms through the years with us without issue, this storm may have contributed to his passing. His three aviary mates are all healthy, and his aviary did not sustain any damage. All of our birds in outdoor aviaries have access to shelters to protect themselves from storms. We have contingency plans for different types of environmental situations, but this particular storm did not require any bird evacuations as no tornadoes approached WBS. While we do everything that we can to keep our birds safe, accidents outside of our control can happen.
As we mourn this tragic loss, we are thankful that his 33 year life surpassed the typical lifespan for Bald Eagles. His dedication as a foster dad touched the hearts of millions around the world, leaving an especially profound impact on those fortunate enough to have worked with him. While Murphy has delighted guests onsite for years with his vocalizations and personality, it wasn't until 2023 when he decided to incubate a rock that he gained an international following. As Murphy's eaglet grew so did our love of him. Murphy's eaglet continued to grow strong under his watchful gaze and went on to be released back to the wild. The following year, Murphy fostered a second eaglet in need with the same dedication he gave the first.
We could not have asked for a better ambassador and role model. We are incredibly grateful for the community that came together as a result of his heartwarming story. We are devastated by this loss and know that the community mourns with us. Murphy will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the memories of those who loved him
Cold, rainy + gloomy Vancouver reflects my inner weather. Tara McPherson could not have painted a better picture of the feeling of heartbreak, loss and the deadness left inside. Where there once was a full beating heart is now a huge gaping hole filled with a sickly ink flower. Hey, we all die sometimes.

The subway was chosen as the single light on the path side made a good spotlight and seemed a likely place you would find someone in this position and the title comes from a song by Dan Auerbach and even has a line about being under a bridge.

Not really, they were basically the same they are now, but it wasn't summer and I was stressed!

I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know -- but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me. However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me. I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me.
