Being quarantined is a great time to finish editing those old photos you never quite finished. Like this photo from back in February.

I have seen this shot done a hundred times and wanted to give it a try. It was not as easy as it looks! Getting a ring to stand in a book and getting the right shadow is a bit tricky. I also wanted to find a page in the book that enhanced the image and I think I found one...:)

My first attempt at the "book, ring, heart shot". I've always admired others' creations. I'm not thrilled with this version-- had many other ideas, but ran out of time. So I think this will be my card for my husband for Valentine's Day. And it's my wish for all of you to celebrate love in your life, in whatever way it reaches you. Have a great Valentine's week-end.
Took this outside, with sunlight, as my Canon Powershot does not take great in-door photos. But had thoughts of playing around with light through red tissue paper, red flowers on the page, etc. This is my engagement ring, with a ruby. I love it. I also had hoped to find a book of poetry, but grabbed Montaigne essays instead. The poetry books did not open well. Then the text seemed too distracting-- so I tried it upside down- still distracting, so finally just blurred the text in photoshop. I only had 10 minutes at lunch to try this shot, but it was a fun experiment.
Other versions of my card attempts below.

This is a Challenge in a newly formed Group, It is the Down Under Challenge 2022. We are small but growing and you are welcome to join us if you are into Photo Manipulation. The main idea here is to have fun with Challenges and one Challenge will be posted once per week on Friday (in Australia). Take a look HERE
Only Challenge entries can be posted to this Group.
This week's Challenge was Shapes.
Shapes are easy in Photoshop with the Pen Tool.
I read once that the shadow of a ring on a book looks like a heart so with this week's theme being 'shadow' I thought I would test the theory........looks like they were right.

Have seen these heart shadows and was wondering if it will be difficult to create with the lighting.
No problems at all....the lighting from the spot lights in our kitchen onto the breakfast bench was just perfect for it.
Like my previous image of my ring with a flashlight shining from the top of the image, this one has the same flashlight that also has a red lights that illuminate in it. I shone it from the bottom of the book unlike the earlier image that was from the top of the book and it produced an upright red heart shadow on my copy of The Photographers Playbook.
Taken with the Lensbaby Scout on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with the Sweet 35 optic at f4.
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you all know that I appreciate your comments and visits although I may not get back to you quickly but I will try.

In honor of the Valentine's Day holiday, a classic composition. These are my wife's an my wedding bands, with the platinum showing the lovely patina of eight happy years together.
Strobist info: A single unmodified speedlight, above the subject, pointing 45˚ downward, triggered with a sync cable. Direct reflections from the page were controlled with a polarizing filter.

I started my new job and it's keeping me busy and exhausted. I'm not used to this whole waking up early thing.
I don't know how often I will be able to keep up with everyones streams now, let alone do my own 365 project. I'll try my best. I may disappear for a few days... but i'll be back eventually. I'm just trying to figure out my schedule of juggling everything.

I'm not sure who first discovered that a wedding ring casts a shadow of a heart on the pages of a book......but I find the outcome magical.
This is a reworking of one of my earlier attempts to capture this magic.
How it was done:
I took a book with blank pages and placed it near one of our windows where the sun was streaming in and where the shadows of the window screen were showing up on the white pages.
I then placed my wedding ring within the pages and took a macro shot of the resulting effect.
I then used a red filter embedded within my processing software to give the background a pink red tone with an old time weathered effect.
I am fortunate to have found the love of my life...... and here's hoping that you have - or will - as well.
Happy Valentines Day to all of you.
This is a fairly simple setup, but it took quite a lot of trial and error to get it right. The light is a single unmodified speedlight, to give very hard light for a very distinct shadow. The speedlight was in front of and above the subject, pointing downward at approximately a 45˚ angle. It was triggered via an RC commander flash on the camera. A polarizing filter was used to control the considerable direct reflection off the page (a direct consequence of the geometry to achieve the heart shadow).
A wide aperture was used to isolate the dictionary entry for amour.
In Lightroom, the Clarity slider was reduced to further soften the image, and the Vibrance was increased.

I have seen so many versions of the ring on the bible with the heart shadow they are all inspirational. I wonder who originated it? Anyway, this is my version very similar to a lot of the versions out there.

Working with speedlite to create the shadow that I want, in this case the two hearts shaped was a hit & miss. Hard to see and judge how the light and shadow fall if your not using continuous light. Much more that I could not get my lightmeter to work remotely hence exposure was trial and error at first till I finally dialled it down to the exposure that I like.
Thanks to Isay for helping me with the set-up and wildflower22 for helping with the caption/description.

Cliché en Flickr, y en mi stream. Ya tenía una de este tipo, pero con luz natural quedó más linda.

Our thank you card
My version of the heart shadow.
Cannon 30D, Nikon SB24 and 28, Pocket Wizards, our guest book, wedding rings and her bouquet.
I printed the thank you cards with Moo
Yes, it could use a little refinement but I had to send it out rather quickly.
One more attempt at this, as I really didn't like the other two very much. I used a Bible for the words. I'm much happier with this one. I only wish the words didn't show through from the next page....very thin pages.
My submission for week 22 of the 2013 photochallenge. The theme for the week is cliche. At any rate, that's my excuse for this image and I'm sticking to it.
(I'm pretty sure a version of this shot is required at every wedding these days.)
