Having unloaded its cargo of limestone at the Greymont dock in Superior, the Wilfred Sykes departs Duluth with a load of sinter from the CN ore dock bound for the hungry blast furnaces of Burns Harbor, Indiana. For being built in 1949, this old girl’s still got plenty of life ahead.
A lovely coloured poppy.. 'Meconopsis'.. .. for you.. I'm not sure if this is a.. 'Hensol Violet'.. or a 'Roemeria Hybrida'.. so ID is most welcome..
Have a fantastic weekend.. thanks for all your visits over the last week..
No group invites please..
I do like these little heart shaped doggy biscuits :) Barney likes them too, but to eat, not for balancing purposes... He is a long suffering pup but always gets well paid for his patience, with cuddles, treats and toys, so it isn't too bad :) We've also had fun balancing books, rope toys, and even (very briefly!) tennis balls on his nose. (Barney would like to take a moment to send his sympathies to Ella, who has to put up with this sort of thing too!)
We've been busy training the last few weeks, taught him to "spin" in an anticlockwise circle the other week (we need to get working on going in a clockwise direction now!), he learned "bow" yesterday, he'll also give the correct paw when asked "left" and "right" (it's taking time to get this one consistent though) and of course, he learned "beg" a few weeks ago too...
It's important to keep his mind busy, especially as he isn't getting as much free running currently, due to his noise phobias. Learning new things, combined with playing fetch for a bit in a "safe" playing field behind the house and having leash walks seems to be keeping him sane (or as sane as collies ever are!), which means I can also keep what remains of my sanity!
Reached Explore #289 (My 200th to reach Explore, thank you very much everyone!!)
Have you ever noticed how infrequently you see a Fulmar's feet? That's because they are usually tucked in when they are flying, and as soon as they land they sit right down covering the feet with their body (like this: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/51210705849/in/photolist ). That's why you never see them standing like a gull. But Fulmars are predominantly water birds, and webbed feet facilitates swimming, but is essential for large birds to be able to take off from water using a run up like this. Frigatebirds are unusual seabirds in that they don't have webbed feet (see here: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/16639451286/in/photolist ). So you will never see one landed on the water. So when they need a rest they have to fly to shore, or sit on a ship's rigging.
So back to Fulmars; The name Fulmar translates from old Norse as foul gull, from its habit of regurgitating oil when threatened. But it isn't a gull at all, it's a petrel with a characteristic tube on its bill. And believe it or not, the rancid oil was once highly prized as it was erroneously thought to have medicinal properties. This was photographed on St Kilda and the significance of this for Fulmars is that until the mid eighteenth century St Kilda was the only British breeding site. It colonised Shetland in 1878 when 12 pairs appeared on Foula, arriving probably from Iceland via the Faeroes, and during the following century it colonised almost the entire coast of Britain. It is not clear what caused the spread but they may have benefited from feeding around whaling ships.
At the turn of the Millennium there were more than half a million pairs breeding in Britain, although there is evidence of a recent decline and there are currently only 350,000 pairs, which is quite a drop. So it is currently amber listed (25-50% decline) but red-listed in Europe (>50% decline).
I have never been as close to a Kingfisher as i was for this shot. it was only 6-8 feet away and she sat there for over ten minutes without a care in the world whilst i kept pressing the shutter button.
Please, have also a look at the pictures I uploaded on my legacy flickr account over the past decade:

Another iphone snap the iPhone X this time and if I had waited and faffed about with a camera this one second long dirty look Sam gave Beau would not have been one of my favourite happy memories of her.. Sam was named by Jonathan's late wife and I thought "what sort of a name is that " she was already nicknamed Sam and we were forever saying she is a she not a he lol... Our darling Sam acted oddly one day and took off running from our car as we were putting the dogs in.. We had to leg it to catch up with her and put her in the large comfortable boot of our car. As we did so I was shocked and told Jonathan " Sams gone blind " I could tell her pupils had simply filled the coloured part of her eye. We got he to the vet immediately where she was diagnosed as completely deaf as well as completely blind with a brain tumour and told nothing could be done for her...we were in shock and she was put to sleep that same morning..her memory lives on through our memories and by having many photos' of her as I have of all my pets I thought this summed up her wonderful nature as after being interrupted from her sleep by Beau she just lay back down..she was so good natured ...Sue ..:)
I am way behind on Flickr, stuff been happening.....nothing to do with illness or anything like that but enough to make me
'feel' ill that's all....I hope to gradually catch up...

This treehopper was filmed in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador and measures only 6 mm in length. Treehoppers are insects related to cicadas and leafhoppers.
Most treehoppers have a highly modified pronotum on the back, in this case forming several hollow spheres and spines, which makes it unpalatable for potential predators. Moreover it resembles an ant which most predators rather avoid.
Treehoppers feed on plant sap which is rich in sugar. In the video the sucking mouthparts of the treehopper have penetrated the vein of a leaf.

A crow sits atop a leafless tree with branches going in every which way in a foggy Kelsey Creek Park, Bellevue, WA.
I have been invaded by Starlings!!! They are going through the suet, faster than I can buy it!
I am seriously considering not feeding the animals anymore, as I am having a major problem with Chipmunks. They have started making homes along my foundation and have dug under my porch and driveway. And though I'll miss my animal visitors, I not sure what else to do. However, I am going to buy hardware fabric first.
Have I mentioned how happy I am that Addie Loo is home from her spa time with morganorton. SIGH!!!! I just love her!
This feels very warm & cozy Autumn to me! The colors of the trees at sunset just warm me up!!!

now
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look will easily unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose
or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands
now, i'm listening to this song,
there is no relation between this song and the picture,
i just want to share what i feel now,
Back to Costa Rica, San Gerardo de Dota this time.
It is really incredible how fast those little hummingbirds fly. And I've got a trash bin full of proof that it really is extremely difficult to catch them in flight. So when this Green Violetear hovered just long enough for the focus to catch on I couldn't have been more happy.

During our stay in Cape Town, we visited 2 townships. Our guide was a local volunteer, proud to tell us how he and the people who live there manage to survive and even are building a future. We walked through " the streets" and had the occasion to meet the children of a pre school project and the women who volunteered to educate them in a really nice and creative way.
