The hat doesn't fit. It doesn't fit anyone but him.
This was my dad's "party hat." He broke it out around the first of June and wore it to every festive occasion Mom would let him wear it to. The first was usually either a graduation or his birthday . . . today.
We lost Dad five years ago in a highly preventable traffic accident, a one-in-a-million unlucky shot the odds of which warp the mind.
I long ago decided that I would no longer remember the day of his death. I don't want to remember how he died, even though I can't forget it. I want to remember the way he lived instead.
And every time I find a used book store that smells of old paperbacks, every time I find a greasy spoon with disgustingly delicious cheeseburgers, every time I hear beautiful tight harmony singing . . . every time I have a close encounter with any of the things (other than his family and friends) that he held dear, I remember.
He never knew me as a married man or a father. In fact, he never knew any of his grandkids at all . . . he's got five. If he'd lived long enough, he would be here commenting on every one of my pictures . . . and probably every one of you all's as well. He loved to meet interesting people.
I don't feel cheated. Bitter, sure, but not cheated. Lots of people get less time with their dads than I did. Lots of people have dads they'd love to forget. I was blessed.

I am not sure if they are showing respect for their country, or serenading the gals, but they took off their hats, a sign of respect, and I like that.
