This poppy literally opened before my eyes. I had clocked it about five minutes beforehand and thought it might open later, there was that slight split that you get on the sepals before it opens up so I’d gone int to get the camera. I took a few photos of it not quite as opened as this but am not happy with the exposure so might not upload them. A little while later, but again less than five minute the hat was completely off and there it was a bright orange welsh poppy, happy days!

Thanks for stopping

So for all of September I participated in the 30 Songs in 30 Days madness and loved every last second of it. Now I honestly can't listen to songs without trying to figure out a way to turn it into a concept for a photo shoot. It's kind of crazy. Anyway, since the beginning of my 30 days was spent mostly trying to annoy the crap out of my friend Tara by picking songs from artistis that would completely horrify her music-snobby heart, I promised her that I would ease the pain by doing a bunch of Tara-friendly shots once I was done. So for this installment of my Tributes to my Homies, rather than shooting in Tara's style, I'm choosing to do a Dave Matthews Band lyrical shot for her instead.

If you don't know Tara, then you're severely deprived. She is, without a doubt, one of the strongest women I know. She's loyal, she's hilarious, and she puts up with tapper on a daily basis, which I'm pretty sure you guys would agree deserves a medal. Her photography is inspired and she is working on a year of musical shots and teaching us a little something about herself in the process. She is a true friend and I'm better for having her in my life. Tara, I this shot's for you (and is probably only the first of many since I owe you more than one DMB shot). I love you, woman.

I find it a little bit funny that I wound up liking this shot the most since you can't really see the gun or my ring the way I had planned, and the way you can in most of the outtakes. But for whatever reason, this one makes me laugh. I think it's the expression on my face. And I thought Tara would enjoy a silly shot today. :)

My hat is off to those who work in their garden despite the heat, humidity and sun. I often walk through the nearby Community Gardens and am awed by the flowers, fruit and vegetables they grow.

The Flickr Lounge, Best Shot Of The Week - Life is hectic at the moment and I have, literally in this particular instance, been all over the place and really not had time to pick up a camera, let alone consider any challenges, etc. Anyhow, herewith one of the few photos I managed last week. I really need to have my camera with me more often. On another note, I'm experiencing a lot of connectivity issues of late so my Flickr time (and general online time) is seriously inhibited. Hoping this improves soon!

Thank you in advance for any comments or favourites, which are always appreciated. I will do my best to reciprocate as and when I can.

* Hats off!

I took this photo earlier today while we were having our mid-morning coffee in the village. Today's market day and it was very busy and I had to be quick to take this photo as there were so many people walking past it and in shot. I was quite a distance away sat outside the cafe. The hats belong to a hat maker who makes hats of all kinds in his workshop at the back of his shop. These are advertising what he sells inside. Amongst other types of hat, I've especially got my eye on one of his "trilby-type" hats.

Dow's Lake Pavillion, Ottawa, Ontario.

The bronze monument, a gift to Canada from the Netherlands, was created by Dutch artist Henk Visch. The 4.6 meter structure was unveiled by Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands in Ottawa in May 2002. The Princess had also dedicated the original Apeldoorn statue two years earlier in May 2000, during the 55th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, in front of a large group of Canadian Veterans.

#50 Hats Off

Hats off! But, in some other pictures in this set, we have the hat on! It is a balancing act and we have to work slowly in this photo shoot! That way, we have complete cooperation with the subject behaving as should!

52 Weeks - Week 4 (View On Black)

(30 Days of Rants & Raves - 05)

My hat's off to René François Ghislain Magritte and to Lothar Wolleh. It is off to Magritte for the surreal images he created that I love so much, and to Wolleh, a German photographer, who captured so very well the spirit of Magritte and his surrealism in his famous 1967 portrait of the artist. Since Wolleh made it a principle for his images to have a square format (you can see a gallery of his portraits of artists here), it only made sense for my image to also have a square format.

Believe it or not, creating this was easier than it looks... thanks to Willmore. Thank you, thank you, Ben Willmore. (My hat is off to him, too.) Love that man's books.

There are some details in this image which were actually a result of some slight editing errors. The corrections didn't look as good as the errors did, if you can believe that, so I "undid" the corrections and I think this image really benefits from their undoing. I'm tempted to say that the shadows on my arm could've been better had I had an off camera flash, but I'm not so sure, to be honest. I'm just really damned happy with the result of this one. :D

EDIT (A MINOR RANT): When I add a photo to a group, I always like to comment on at least one image in the group, or more if the group requires it. I don't just post and run. What I find frustrating, though, is when I go to a group I really like, such as the .:utterly surreal:. group and I have to browse through 12 pages(!) of images before I come across one photo that's truly surreal (and if you enjoy surrealism, then that image is worth your time—I favourited it and left the photographer a comment gushing with praise). Seriously. I mean, the photo I saw of a steer's skull in a desert is no more surreal than the image I saw of an eagle. People stretch definitions beyond recognition, and that's why group admins get frustrated and start to delete images, and even put a limit on the number of images they allow uploaded in a day. ~shakes head~
