I must say, I was surprised to find this open. A Victorian church by Joseph Clarke, expanded by that man Pritchett and the Chelmsford vandal Chancellor later in the 19th Century. Rather pretty in its way, set in the middle of the common (it seemed too natural to call it a green) in a thicket of chestnut trees. Its virtue is its smallness I suppose.
Inside was warm and cosy with an odd little window by AL Wilkinson.
Then, I headed on forestwards, and ahead of me on a hill suddenly appeared a dramatic tower, the houses falling away below it, thickets of dark trees beyond. I climbed to a delightful village, its main street lined by grand 18th and 19th Century buildings, and a pub at each end. It reminded me of Dedham. Halfway between the pubs was Hatfield Broad Oak church.

An Elizabethan park with a famous Jacobean house which had a great Jacobean garden, designed by Thomas Chaundler, Salomon de Caus and John Tradescant. The layout has changed many times since then but now has a 'seventeenth century character' with terraces and garden enclosures, including a knot garden, herb garden and privy garden. The East Garden adjoining the Jacobean house is more formally planted with its parterre, topiary, herbaceous borders and vegetable garden. The park is well-wooded has an ancient avenue of oak trees.
History
Dating from the 17th century, the gardens at Hatfield House have evolved into a gardeners’ paradise. Visitors can enjoy the peace of the West Garden with its scented garden and fountains, and view the famous knot garden adjoining the Tudor Old Palace where Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. The East garden bordering the Jacobean house, home of the Cecil family for 400 years, is more formally planted with its parterre, topiary, herbaceous borders and vegetable garden.

Now, I'm not normally your train-spotting type (shutup at the back!), but this seemed like too good an opportunity to miss. The newly completed A1 Tornado (wikipedia, A1 trust) was London bound from (presumably yorkDarlington). It came through shatfield lifted*, which given the size of it, was mightily impressive. Still my 5 year old was none too impressed.
* throttle off (if steam engines have such a thing)
