Hatfield House

The home of the 7th Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury and their family.

The Estate has been in the Cecil family for 400 years.

In 1611, Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and the son of Lord Burghley, the chief minister of Elizabeth I built this fine Jacobean House adjoining the site of the Old Palace of Hatfield.

The deer park surrounding the house, and the older building of the Old Palace, had been owned Henry VIII who had used it as a home for his children, Edward, Elizabeth and Mary. It was while she was living in the Old Palace, in 1558, that Elizabeth learned of her accession to the throne.

The House was splendidly decorated for entertaining the Royal Court, with State Rooms rich in paintings, fine furniture and tapestries.

Superb examples of Jacobean craftsmanship, such as the Grand Staircase with its fine carving, and the rare stained glass window in the private chapel can be seen throughout the house .

The Armoury

A fine domestic organ supplied in 1609 by John Haan, a Dutchman.

The case retains its original decoration by Rowland Bucket, an extraordinarily versatile artist whose painting and gilding on ceilings, walls and furniture did much to brighten the interior of the House when it was first built.

The organ is in regular use and is played to entertain visitors.

King James I did not like the Old Palace much and so gave it to Queen Elizabeth I's (and his own) chief minister Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, in exchange for Theobalds which was the Cecils' family home. Cecil liked to build and so tore down three wings of the Old Palace (the back and sides of the square) in 1608 and used the bricks to build the new Hatfield House. This side of the house - the north front, was originally the rear of the house. The south front then faced the Great North Road and is consequently more elaborately decorated in order to impress visitors and passers by.

I spent a lovely Saturday with some friends walking around Hatfield House and gardens, i am very lucky to live 10 minutes from this lovely place.

Hatfield has had a pretty turbulent history. The pit had been closed and re-opened many times over the years as different owners came and went. The coal prep was one of the areas of the site that had been demolished during one of these transitional 'mothballed' period' and in the latter years of operation it had been replaced with more modern scaled down plant.
