This picture is #41 in my 100 strangers project . Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page.

Garrett was painting the hallway walls of my floor at work. When I asked if I could take his portrait he agreed right away. I got this semi-candid shot as he re-filled his roller and looked my way.

Garrett has been painting professionally for 7-8 years, though he commented he'd been painting "since he could hold a brush" since his father owns the painting company.

When not painting, Garrett is an avid athlete and sportsman. In the winter he's into snowmobiling, and in the summer he plays baseball. He played for his college team, and now plays in a local adult league.

Thanks for being stranger #41 Garrett!

Tech Notes

Though it seemed like this hallway had a lot of light, in reality it didn't. I was shooting slower film (125 ISO metered at 100), so even with the relatively fast 150mm f/2.8 Sonnar wide-open, I still had to shoot 1/15 of a second. Though I was leaning against the wall to keep the camera still, when I grabbed this shot, Garrett was still slightly in motion. 1/15 is not fast enough to freeze motion so there's a bit of blur. It's not bad enough for me to reject the photo, though.

If I had been shooting 400 speed film I would have been fine.

I found the light here irresistable, and B&W film's dynamic range really shines in situations like this.
