It has always amazed me to see hummingbirds close-up and in person. This was shot at Huntington Beach Central Park, and then I added a couple of layers of my own texture.
Concarneau has made its living from the fishing industry for hundreds of years and the town remains an important center: more than 100,000 tonnes of tuna are caught each year by Concarneau-based boats.
Concarneau is the third most important fishing port of France.
The town has two distinct areas: the modern town on the mainland and the medieval Ville Close, a walled town on a long island in the center of the harbour. Historically, the old town was a center of shipbuilding. The Ville Close is now devoted to tourism with many restaurants and shops aimed at tourists. However restraint has been shown in resisting the worst excesses of souvenir shops. Also in the Ville Close is the fishing museum. The Ville Close is connected to the town by a bridge and at the other end a ferry to the village of Lanriec on the other side of the harbor.

Mom has at least three newly-hatched chicks hiding in the grass behind her. She went into her famous broken-wing display seconds after I snapped this photo. I left the family alone then so their life could get back to normal.

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos) - 20230511-01
A large duck, generally common and familiar within its extensive range. Males are distinctive with iridescent green head, yellow bill, chestnut breast, and gray body. Females are mottled brown with orange and black splotches on the bill. Found anywhere with water, including city parks, backyard creeks, and various wetland habitats. Often in flocks, and frequently mixes with other duck species. In North America, females can be tricky to distinguish from American Black Duck, Mottled Duck, and Mexican Duck where ranges overlap. Those species are all darker-bodied than Mallard. A good view of the wing can be helpful, too: white wingbars on the leading and trailing edges of the blue wing patch are bolder on Mallard. Frequently hybridizes with those species, which can be even more confusing. Any bird with extensive white in the tail or curled feathers above the tail has some Mallard genes. (eBird)

I had the distinct feeling that I was being watched, even though I could not see another soul along the wide open trail, except for my husband. Scanning the reeds and shrubs for a bear or other mammal, I finally locked eyes with this well-hidden mallard. He never moved - just watched us with a rather unnerving intensity :-)

Rhinoceros: since 1973 the population has recovered well and increased to 544 animals around the turn of the century. To ensure the survival of the endangered species in case of epidemics animals are translocated annually from Chitwan to the Bardia National Park and the Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve since 1986. However, the population has repeatedly been jeopardized by poaching: in 2002 alone, poachers killed 37 individuals in order to saw off and sell their valuable horns.[6] Chitwan has the largest population of Indian rhinoceros in Nepal, estimated at 605 individuals out of 645 in total in the country.

It has been a long day for me yesterday.
It's not that easy to get help in a situation of big pain if you have to go a longer way for it (for me 65 km by car).
But the feeling after treatment, when you feel the difference directly...

Someone has to do the job of supervising the garden and so the Dragon ventured outside yesterday afternoon even if it was very cold and the lawn was frozen. He didn't stay out for long, just made sure everything was okay and went down the path to the fence to say hello to the neighbour's bunnies, before returning indoors and curl up next to the radiator.

Grand Manan has a rich maritime history. By 1851, most of the island’s population of 1,200 was involved in the working waterfront; men fished and women pickled and cured herring. Innovative fishing and seaweed harvesting techniques were developed, including weir fishing, torch fishing, and lobster fishing, with the introduction of lobster traps in 1870.
The island’s fishing industry changed with the end of smoked herring in the late 20th century, but it still lives in lobstering, scalloping, weir fishing, dulse harvesting, and pen salmon aquaculture. (Island Institute)

The answer is obvious
Although autumn has now well and truly given way to winter here in Melbourne, there is still a great deal of colour around if you remember to take your time, stop and smell the roses, like this blazing golden yellow and orange beauty which I saw on poking its head out from behind a for sale sign in the front garden of an Art Deco villa on a walk in early June. I fear that the house for sale is likely to be demolished and replaced with more land intense town houses, in which case this rose, which I suspect to be a Royal Circus Rose, will probably be torn out. I sincerely hope not.
Although the day I took this photo was the 2nd day of winter, it was a lovely and sunny day with bright blue skies: although there was a definite crispness in the air if you were out of the sun.
Circus roses were first bred in 1956 in the United States by Herbert Swim. They were introduced later that year to the American market by Armstrong Nursery. Herbert Swim was a famous rose breeder who bred roses for blooms that would hold up to the hot summer sun. He is credited with raising a number of varieties of roses over his career. The rose "Royal Circus" (also known simply as "Circus") was created by crossing the Floribunda rose "Pinocchio" with the hybrid tea "Fandango" rose. The result is this gorgeous yellow rose that produces vibrant reddish edges.
Lorenzo has been my Flickr icon forever. I found him wandering around the sidewalk and took him home, he passed within 24 hours but he has never passed from my memory.

It has been foggy and off and on rainy since Friday. The local airport had to cancel almost all flights for the past three days. My son had to get back to school but his flight was canceled for two days straight. I ended up driving him to Detroit to catch the second leg of his flight; with fog like this most of the way there and back. At night you couldn't see more than the distance of three lane hash marks, even with fog lights.

We are finally getting some nice warm daytime temps and nighttime temps not falling into single digits here in Oz. I know lots of people prefer Autumn and Spring, but I think I will always be a summer person.
If I had to choose two things to smell for the rest of my life, I'd pick lavender and fresh bread. But that's just my two scents worth ;)
