Close your eyes and float downstream
To where the marsh grass dances... "

Lighthouse IJmuiden, The Netherlands
A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of physical structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and to serve as a beacon for navigational aid, for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.
Schokland the former island reclaimed from much of the former "Zuiderzee" lies like a fish on dry land in the middle of the Northeast Polder, and is seen worldwide as the symbol of the Dutch struggle against the water and is included in the World Heritage List of the Unesco.
The island is fringed with a planted row of trees that emphasize the former contours of the island.
The island consists of peat soil and now the island is no longer enclosed by the seawater, this peat soil is increasingly sinking in and becomes part of the sea clay of the Northeast Polder.
The island has a tragic history as the ferocious former Zuiderzee swept away pieces of coastline further and further, bit by bit.
The seawall consisted of a single basalt piece of dike here and there, while the vast majority was formed by a wooden stockade.
The very poor population lives mainly from fishing, but there were also a small numbers of farms.
The situation got very bad when the pile worm made its appearance in the Zuiderzee, when it was taken by the East Indies sailing ships of the United East India Company. This worm practically ate away the wooden pilings around the island.
The situation became untenable, and when the island was inundated by a violent storm and storm surge in 1825, there were calls to evacuate the island.
However, it was not untill 1859 that King William III declared the order to evacuate the island by now being able to ensure safety was impossible and the povery of the population was dire.
Until the closure and reclamation, Schokland remained untill 1942 in existence with a few more employees and their families of the Department of Public Works including a harbor master and a lighthouse keeper.
We are standing here at the former harbor that was reconstructed until recently and look across the old path toward the harborlight, where there is the old lightkeeper's house and the small building where on the roof the foghorn was mounted.
This harbor was an important point of orientation for the busy shipping traffic to the route to the mouth of the river "IJssel" and the very important town of "Kampen".
During stormy weather the harbor was a port of refuge for the ships that sometimes remained at the quays for days........

Night reflections of the big city and harbour lights
False Creek is a short inlet in the heart of Vancouver. It separates downtown from the rest of the city. It was named by George Henry Richards during his Hydrographic survey of 1856-63. George Richards named False Creek during his survey of the coast in the mid-19th century. While traveling along the south side of the Burrard Inlet, he thought he was traversing a creek; upon discovering his error, he gave the waterway its modern name. Wikipedia
The Granville Street Bridge is an eight lane bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia. It spans False Creek and is 27.4 metres above Granville Island.

Silence on the Pier – Black and White Coastal Minimalism
Some stories are best told when you strip away the colors. On the very edge of the stone pier, beneath the silhouette of the harbor light, I captured this timeless moment of patience and peace. A fisherman with his rod aimed at the open sea and a figure leaning against the chiseled stone embody the true spirit of coastal life. In the background, layers of hills fading into the distance and the silhouette of a far-off bridge give the frame an epic depth. Pure candid documentary, shot with a focus on geometry, contrast, and the authentic atmosphere of our region.

Several lighthouses have been built at the Presque Isle Harbor on the southern shore of Lake Superior. The first two, at the end of a breakwater pier were washed away by storms in 1886, and in 1889. Other, more substantial lighthouses and breakwaters were constructed, the last serving until 1985, when an electrified steel tower with a red beacon light was installed at the end of a 1500 foot extension of the breakwater. This lighthouse is also known as the Marquette Upper Harbor Light.
• Harbor lights begin to glow,
Guiding tides that softly flow.
On quiet waves their colors gleam,
Like scattered stars in evening's dream.
They whisper home through wind and foam,
A promise: 'you are not alone.'
While night unfolds its velvet skies,
Hope shines where sea and shore arise.
Have a good weekend you all !
Have you at least saw it? Moonrise tonight was amazing and spending this evening with some family and friends made it even more memorable. Full moon chase was almost called off and then it just showed up. It was a night to remember for sure. What do you think?
Standing proudly at the entrance of Chania’s historic harbor, the 16th-century Venetian Lighthouse transforms into a magnificent architectural sentinel at night. Soft, warm uplighting accentuates its dramatic, minaret-style silhouette, casting a brilliant silver glow across the dark Chania harbor.
The city breathes in a quiet intensity as the sun hides behind a bruised, crimson sky. The harbor, usually a place of chaotic movement, transforms into a sanctuary of light where the golden glow of the apartments meets the sharp, electric edge of the violet pier. Every reflection on the water tells a story of the souls living behind those windows, watching the tide go by in a silent, nocturnal embrace.
Beneath the bridge, the world seems to hold its breath, caught between the warmth of home and the cold mystery of the river. The purple neon path acts as a bridge between reality and a dreamlike state, guiding the weary traveler through a landscape where shadows are deep and the light is a vibrant promise of life. It is a moment of gothic beauty, where the industrial architecture melts into a poetic dance of colors.
The sky burns with a fierce intensity, where deep indigo clouds ignite into a fiery orange brilliance above the silent harbor. In the center of this electric atmosphere, the Celebrity Eclipse sits as a massive, glowing anchor against the shifting tides. High above the water, winged sentinels dive and soar, their dark forms casting long shadows that dance across the golden surface like spirits of the air. These are the eyes of the night, watching from the heights to guard the world against unseen evils and ensuring that the descending darkness remains a place of peace.
From their high vantage point, these aerial guardians patrol the liquid gold of the harbor, scanning the depths for any disturbance in the world's balance. As the city lights begin to shimmer on the horizon, the watchers remain focused, their shadows cutting through the reflection of the burning heavens. It is a moment where the water and sky collide in a display of hidden power, protected by those who circle above to shield the night from the ills of the world.
Smile on Saturday: City by Night
I don't live in or near a city, but once each month during the summer the seaside village where I live comes alive in the evening when floating braziers are filled with cedar and pine logs and set on fire. They are kept burning from dusk to midnight by volunteers in kayaks stoking the fires. The shops stay open and the waterside restaurants are filled with diners.
Yesterday's double rainbow. It was so bright and so huge. I couldn't get the whole thing if I tried. Luckily I was slow enough on the grill I could run outside and snap a few shots.
As blue hour settles over Svolvær, the harbor comes alive with warm lights mirrored on glassy water, while the rugged Lofoten peaks stand quietly beneath the evening sky.

Are you in for a tip? After finding the right location, the big challenge was catching the right storm, with enough water action to get this frame. Shooting with 1200mm lens with the 40mph winds is an adventure by itself! But we will touch up on that some other time. After I settled down and dialed in all my settings all I had to do is to shoot in a burst mode to capture enough waves for the final blend. TIP: after catching enough waves, all you have to do is pick the best frames and after layering them in Photoshop, select all of them and change the blend mode to “lighten”. That will bring all the water to be visible in the same time having this dramatic effect. It would be nice and much easier to capture all of this in one frame but unfortunately our side of the lake never gets that dramatic. Having snow and some birds in the final frame were just a cherry on a cake :) What do you think?
From the lighting of a burner to the flipping of a switch and from automation to satellite navigation, lighthouses are supposedly obsolete. That's all fine and well on a placid sunset evening but I'll tell you this from my own experience: when tired, cold, and wet from a long stormy night on the water, you'll never see a sweeter sight.
Natures way of giving back to us. Nature is painting for us, night after night, pictures of infinite beauty. We just have to stop for second and enjoy it. The sky was like a beautiful abstract painting over Fishtown last night.
Not a soul was stirring in the early morning hours in Frankfort Saturday. Sheer ice laid beneath a dusting of snow atop the north breakwater, and even though the lake had settled the walk out required one's full attention. Admittedly, I find it a bit spooky to be on the pier in such conditions and everything looks slightly different while your feeling edgy. I like the feeling in small doses...it makes me feel like a kid again. New perspectives breathe life into the imagination, and when I finally made it to the end, far enough to see the westerly face of Elberta's harbor light...I realized mine was working overtime.

It's hard to believe, isn't it? Spring has arrived, and it feels somewhat surreal. The driving force for my wife and me is the ability to wholeheartedly savor moments like these in life. When a day begins on such a delightful note, whatever lies ahead doesn't seem daunting. What are your thoughts on this?
