The Snowy Owl was an accidental introduction to Slovakia. I have tried to find out how this happened but there was no information I could find.
Sorry about the clipped wings and high iso but my exif doesn't show that I'm at just under 800mm focal length and I had no time to change my settings as this fly by happened very close to me so I just got the shot rather than trying to be perfect lol. My neighbourhood must be getting pretty bad when hoodlums are doing this kind of thing in broad daylight in front of witnesses.
that's the day i was born and hence, i had a birthday on april 9th, 2009! AHHHH!
it was a fun day. though it ended with bloatedness after drinking a soy chai at a restaurant. it was the powder mix chai, which, from experience, tends to be laden with dairy... Oh NOES! . . .
in any case, it was still fun. a guy gave me a HUGE purple cellophane wrapped basket of homemade peanut butter cookies he made himself, pretty white roses, funny balloons, and a card about BOOTYBUTTS (the card i received at work was about a toilet and poo... ironic much?)! his mom got me a to-die-for gift card to starbuck's (i whole-heartedly support the local coffee and tea shops, but sometimes, they just aren't around when you need 'em the most!)
then he and i went out to breakfast/lunch/brunch/whatever you wanna call it at T.C. Eggington's. they have great vegetarian choices... "portobellini"... yum! on the way to breakfast, we saw a mother and her tiny baby ducks by the freeway in the puddle-y canal/gutter/whatever you wanna call that. it was cool because it was my birthday and they were cute, yet odd because it was by a freeway and not in a park, or in my school's irrigation or something. them duckies must be suffering economically too, eh?
so after that, i contemplated going back home to work on a commedia dell'arte mask for theatre class, but decided to just veg and hang with this guy at his apartment (i find vegging out, doing nothing a bit difficult to do sometimes).
later on, we met up with my parents to eat dinner at the Euro Cafe in Gilbert, AZ. a great foodsie greeky place. and that's where, you know, *ahem*... the soy-chai-laden-with-dairy-omg-why-did-i-order-this fiasco happened. so after dinner, with all of us feeling like cows (even though i hardly ate anything and they ate like contestants in a hotdog eating contest), we went to Wal-Mart of all places. i'm particularly NOT a Wal-Mart fan, but since i was at Wal-Mart and it might be cheaper than at other places, i bought vanilla soy ice cream because i was magnetized/hankering for some.
we finally headed home around 11pm, after which i quickly shoved this guy out the door and kissed him goodbye, so i could heat up some of those peanut butter cookies and WHAM BAM!... inhale hot cookies n' ice cream. mmmmmmmmmm... no cake this year. and i wanted it that way. no one even sang to me either i noticed, but that's perfectly ok. it's not a crime. wait wait...i take that back: he played the weird al birthday song... so essentially, i was sung to in mp3 format. :)
oh yeah, and at work today for my 'employee birthday'... i made up fruit, granola, & yogurt parfaits for everyone. someone bought all the ingredients (i requested it instead of birthday cake), and i went right to work -- whipping up those babies during my lunch break. i was so amazed some people didn't know what a parfait was or how to make them.
well, now they know :)
suffice to say, i'm on a parfait kick now. i hadn't had one in a year before that day. soy yogurt though. yes, please. :)
p.s. thanks dude for taking these kickity arse photos!

Every year I say no more duckling shots.
Technically therefore I haven't broken my own rule.
Naturally I had approached the local pond in search of goosanders, when I stumbled across these youngsters.

We h ad an incredible pelagic out of Tofino yesterday. We had 1 endangered Short-tailed Albatross and 15 near-threatened Laysan Albatrosses and several Black-footed Albatrosses so we had the trifecta! It was incredible because Short-tailed are extremely rare and last year at this time we had 3 Short-tailed s on a similar trip last march and we never thought it would happen again! I was really happy about seeing the Laysan Albatrosses since I have been trying for several years to see one in BC waters. The Laysan was BC Bird #427 for me. We ended up seeing an incredible number of them 15 to be exact! At one point we had 9 sitting all together. I went from seeing none for several years to seeing a flock! totally crazy! We lucked out by finding a few fishing boats but the best part was three young birders were on board and for 2 of them it was their first pelagic and they were lucky to hit the jackpot!. Their smiles and excitement were the best part of the trip for me.
We also had some incredible marine mammals this trip : 2 Humpback Whales, 1 Sea Otter, 4 Northern Fur Seals and a rare first for most on board which were 30 Risso's Dolphins and 4 Northern Right Whale Dolphins.

34:52 A Place I Love
I love the Oregon coast, and I also love being in the forest, so here, I was in the forest on the Oregon coast. I find that being in a forest, I immediately feel a sense of calm and oneness with nature, and am in awe of everything around me. When I try to capture that on camera, it's never what I experienced, so have a hard time working with any of my forest images. The magic happens when I'm there, but it doesn't seem to look the same on the screen. Oh well....
I wasn't able to be online much the past couple of days, so most likely, you only received faves from me. I'll try to remedy that today. Have a lovely Monday!

Barn Swallow sitting paused for a moment (which rarely happens) in the rain. I truly worry about these guys with the amount of pesticides and neonicotinoids in use the hypothesis is that these birds are starving, if not on their breeding grounds then during migration.
I just happened to see her in hay field by edge of my yard.
I managed to quickly open door and call to her as she looked around a got a few shots before she walked to woods in background. Shortly after this day she gave birth to two beautiful fawns. I have seen them nearly a hundred times now. I used to keep account but finally gave up!!! :-)

I admit it...I am a "Battlestar Galactica" geek!! If you watched the amazing series, you will remember this phrase that I used as the title!

He's big., looks a little like a Pterodactyl's smaller cousin., and has an 'alpha' male mentality! when one arrives near you., you just know something will happen., and when one flies past like this one it always grabs your attention. Beautiful large bird and the world (and photography) would be far poorer place without him!

For some reason, this and a couple of other pics came out really dark and grainy (I probably screwed up a setting or two again). But, instead of trying to fix it or even trash the pic, I decided to go with it.

This month the theme was 'Christmas Magic' chosen by Jesse. This is my contribution to the magic that only happens once a year in December.

About the series
All of the Photos were shot in Nepal, 10 years ago on a vacation with very good friends and my Canon 400d DSLR. I now restored some of the photos in Lightroom and for me it was a nice way to commemorate this very special vacation. It was partly a culture shock, but mostly in an entirely positive sense! A truely special experience for me and I will always remember the wonderful times I had! For each photo, I want to share some information about the location, my technique or my editing.
About the post-processing
For editing I've used Lightromm-presets as a basis. I did some adjustments and sometimes I used the brush-tool to highlight individual areas or persons. Overall, I held back with the editing and I tried to keep a “natural look”.
