The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock on Washington's Olympic Peninsula began its 32nd year on October 2nd, 2012 with orientation for the incoming class.

The red looked really cool and I was tempted to keep it... but went with black. The red will show through nicely in a few decades of bumps and bangs.

Only red tools are being used today.
Red is the colour of blood, a ruby, and strawberries. Next to orange at the end of the visible spectrum of light, Red is commonly associated with danger, sacrifice, passion, fire, beauty, blood, anger, socialism and communism, and in China and many other cultures, with happiness.

I ran across a stash of antique hand tools at a thrift store and could not walk away from them. I find them so beautiful. In addition to the solid steel construction and hardwood handles, there are decorative touches.
These tools even work!
Car engine, this is automotive part that use many automotive tools to repair and must cleanest to work with it.

This light little hand tool works brilliantly for cutting the clumps of weedy grass that are 5x taller than the rest of my "lawn." C.S. Osborne duck bill pliers with smooth jaw are the finest professional quality. Drop forged from high carbon steel. The jaws are hardened, tempered and carefully polished. Planing the bevelled edge of the plank allows the next plank to lie along it and helps to ensure the eventual watertight integrity of the boat. These long joints are not caulked, so the fit has to be precise.

I think the wait for this was 30+ months but I couldn't be more thrilled with 28 inches of beech goodness.

The School begins classes once each year, early in October. Students are divided into sections of 12 students each, and get two hours of classroom instruction and six hours of shop instruction per day, Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm.
Basic Boatbuilding is the focus of the first semester, which runs from early October to late December.
The instructors assume that most, if not all, students have no woodworking skills and proceed from that assumption. The skills taught in the first semester are those essential to boatbuilding, and the course, for that reason, is very "hands-on".
Students learn to sharpen and use all their tools, and participate in a wide range of individual skill-building exercises, from learning to make the joints commonly used in boatbuilding to a series of tools. Students learn to draft and make a half-model. Then, working in pairs, they learn to loft a boat full-size on the floor. Finally, working, together as a team, the semester culminates in December as students work together to build a flat-bottomed skiff.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located in Port Hadlock WA and is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school.
