Instant Tool Collection!

Actually, there are 5 Stone worker's chisels in this funky old tool set. Chisel number 6 is a Woodworking chisel and number 3 is a boat-builder's caulking chisel. (This one also happens to be the most valuable chisel in the bunch.)

These old tools have been loved pretty darn hard and will all need to be reground and sharpened if you plan to use them for stonework. The pictures will tell you more than I can, so please take a look.

Of course you don't have to do anything at all if you plan to display them. This lot of seven funky tools make an awesome instant collection!

Briwax furniture wax is the premier multipurpose wax. Although originally developed for the artisan cabinet maker, it quickly became apparent that the untrained or amateur wood worker could obtain near professional results with this remarkably easy-to-use product. Amateurs and professionals alike, all agree, that no other wax can match the results that Briwax so easily delivers.

Briwax is a solvent based blend of beeswax and carnauba wax, two of ofthe finest wood finishing waxes known to man. Most of the waxes foundon the shelves today contain the solvents turpentine or mineralspirits. We use a much hotter solvent, toluene, which allows us toemulsify more of the harder, more durable waxes like carnauba to givebetter protection to your finished surfaces. The use of a hottersolvent results in the wax setting much more quickly, giving thecustomer the higher luster of the Briwax finish faster.

The School begins classes once each year, early in October. Students are divided into sections of 12 students each, and get two hours of classroom instruction and six hours of shop instruction per day, Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm.

Basic Boatbuilding is the focus of the first semester, which runs from early October to late December.

The instructors assume that most, if not all, students have no woodworking skills and proceed from that assumption. The skills taught in the first semester are those essential to boatbuilding, and the course, for that reason, is very "hands-on".

Students learn to sharpen and use all their tools, and participate in a wide range of individual skill-building exercises, from learning to make the joints commonly used in boatbuilding to a series of tools. Basic lathe work is taught. Students learn to draft and make a half-model. Then, working in pairs, they learn to loft a boat full-size on the floor. Finally, working, together as a team, the semester culminates in December as students work together to build a flat-bottomed skiff.

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located in Port Hadlock WA and is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school.

Our mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. We build both commissioned and speculative boats for sale while teaching students boatbuilding the skills they need to work in the marine trades.

Pictures from this year's first Traditional Timber Framing and Full Scribe Log building course. We were building a Norwegian log cabin taught by Norwegian carpenter Marius Holje. As well students built a massive French style timber frame structure from heavy larch timbers using French and Japanese scribe rule centre line layout system. Log building was build using only axes and chisels. No saws were used to cut the joints.

Based loosely on a plan from Lee Valley. Completed in 2004.

The apron - front board - was a happy accident. I'd bought more hard maple slabs than I needed (by double) so I let the front and back boards hang. Great for clamping long boards. It also extended about a foot to the left of the face vise - and I've left it that way. Also useful for holding work.

So i had obtained enough M1.2 setscrews for the rangefinder dial of my Agfa Isolette III. Only problem, they were too long !

They were 4mm long while i needed only 3mm of length. About 1mm had to be cut off with a Dremel tool.

But how to handle such a tiny setscrew during that job ? Fingers are too thick and tweezers have not enough grip.

Here is my answer. I took a mechanical pencil (for 0,5mm lead refills), removed the cap and enlarged the hole in the clamping jaw with a 1mm drill. Next just opened the jaws and inserted the setscrew. A perfect handtool !

The four boxes uncapped.
