This was one of the last trail races of my career and it was the farthest I ever ran. It was a challenging 50 mile course with a lot of rolling hills and roots and rocks to stumble over. I was 11 th female over-all with a time of 9:11.38. 2008 and 2009 were not great running years for me. While I was training for Vermont 100, I was suffering greatly with two injuries, planter fasciitis and a serious hamstring tear. I needed to mend and gave up the sport I love so much. Now that I'm totally recuperated, in the next couple of months I will make a decision to train for Vermont 100 which I'd like to complete in 2011 or 12.
Below is a group picture of our winning team. We had a combined time of 39 hours, 22 minutes and 59 seconds. We beat the next team by more than three hours!
Our team, White Out Conditions-- L to R
Nathan Echols- 11th over-all 7.23.01
Lisa Madden- 45th over-all 8.44.19
Donna Graham-Finan- 75th over-all 9.11.38
Randy Miller- 12th over-all 7:25.13
and Glen Redpath 2nd place finisher over-all with a blistering time of 6:38.48!!
My dialogue with my surgeon (as I remember it eight weeks later) and my stream of consciousness on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, the day of the definitive diagnosis--complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in my left knee.
Ugghhh…major fail.
Doc: so what do you want to do? did you read the website?
wow, gotta make a decision on the spot? who actually does the homework their doctor assigns? what if i choose poorly and die? what if i were illiterate? what then? holy crap.
cadaver graft--a dead guy's achille's tendon in my knee, >20% failure rate, 1e-6 chance of HCV or HIV transmission. fantastic! fix the knee, suffer a debilitating demise of liver cancer or opportunistic infections. hamstring autograft: no anterior knee pain, stretches out, 5% failure rate; a messed up knee AND leg? forget that. patellar tendon autograft--huge incision in the front of my knee for excision of the graft, gory pictures, 2% failure rate, "golden standard." crapola. no pain, no gain, let's bring it on.
Me: yeah. i want the surgery. the patellar tendon autograft.
Doc: fantastic! i have an opening next Monday, April 4th. how's that work for you?
wtf?!that'sinsixdays! why's he so eager?! dammit. jesus effing christ. seriously?! surgery on my birthday?! just kill me. take me now. seppuku. right here.
Me: remind me, what's the schedule for recovery?
(Before the karmic revenge/kamikaze tendencies/fatigue/apparently poor proprioception manifested itself through the destruction of my knee, I had planned a trip to NYC for the end of May, you know, a binge eating odyssey. There's no way I was going to bail. Never.)
Doc: two days staying off of the operative leg; full weight-bearing locked in full-extension from 48 hours to 4 weeks; walking with the brace unlocked 4-6 weeks; walking without the brace from 6 weeks onward, bob loblaw……
*counting in my head* April 4.....May 27..…7.5 weeks till NYC. Ok, I'll be able to walk by then… and more importantly, carry my camera [but apparently not get down low]
Me: yeah, April 4th, surgery, that's fine.
Ugghhh…crap.....major fail.
------
Other things that happened: having to sign a waiver to allow him to use a cadaver graft in the situation he accidentally breaks the one he would rip out of my knee (how much would that suck?), and listening to this resident tell me about death by blood clots or MRSA. Apparently, these are the only risks he could think of from the surgery. What happen to arthrofibrosis or, more importantly, turning into a lard from sitting around for two weeks because of your useless peg-leg? That NYT article, SO timely. Oh, and permanent nerve damage or cutaneous numbness--can't forget about that one. If someone sliced and peeled off my skin there, I wouldn't even know it.
The operation went accordingly. My surgeon's probably a technical rockstar, John Martin Leland the Third, group physician of the Chicago Blackhawks (and previously the Philly Eagles). His most often repeated line to me: "Don't interrupt, let me finish answering your question and then you can ask the next one." Bam! Shut down.
New York City, see you in a little.
A very hilly half marathon for the first race of the year. Running, when the course is tough, is about mantras, usually "fast feet, strong legs." Yesterday, I added "powerful hamstrings" to the thought loop.
This shot, by my husband, meters from the finish. I'm running faster and stronger at 40 than at 30, faster and stronger post-cancer than pre, faster and stronger on a half of hard hills than I could run a flat 5k when I first started racing. And I learn then relearn that persistence pays off, chipping away at self-doubt and building mile upon mile.
Running gives me a profound gratitude for my body and my mind. This was by far the hilliest course I'd ever tackled, and I worked hard. It ultimately was a race run as training for Boston, and with more elevation gains and losses in a half than Boston's entirety, it was confidence inducing indeed. I love this sport. I love the way it's a good metaphor for life.
Show up. Do the work. Own the road. Smile. This is the good stuff. I'm here for it.

A drumroll might have accompanied Shoaib Akhtar on to the field on his return to international cricket. The Rawalpindi Express had been derailed by a drugs scandal in October, the latest in his long and winding lurch from one controversy to another. But there he stood, at the top of his run on a gorgeous day at St George's Park, purring like a freshly serviced jet engine.
Akhtar deals in a brand of celebrity that seems to attract supporters and detractors in equal measure. In this Test, he satisfied both constituencies. His bowling in South Africa's first innings was ragged in terms of line and length. But his pace was consistently lethal. The batsmen could only flounder as Akhtar took four wickets. South Africa were done and dusted just over an hour after lunch on the first day for an indefensible and undefendable 124.
His supporters, then, had reason to be cheerful. But so did the detractors, once television cameras captured Akhtar in what was plainly a less than amicable discussion with coach Bob Woolmer next morning. That marked the beginning of the end of Akhtar's tour. He and Woolmer were at odds about the hamstring problem that he brought into the match, and soon a knee injury was added to the list. The next kink in the story was that Akhtar returned home with the man he arrived as cover for, Umar Gul (who had hurt an ankle), after this match. He also landed himself a fine from the Pakistan board for his altercation with Woolmer.
Pakistan reached stumps on the first day on 135 for six. The casual observer might assume the pitch was difficult, the bowling decent and the batting indecent; two out of three ain't bad, but no blame should be laid on the pitch for the 16 wickets that fell in 81 overs. The surface was by some distance the most South African of the summer, brimful of pace and bounce, and as true as the clear blue sky above.
Inzamam-ul-Haq did not bat that day because he had spent much of it off the field, receiving treatment for a blow to his shoulder from an errant ball during the morning warm-up. Instead, he lumbered to the crease at No. 8 on the second morning. That was where he stayed, scoring a seamless 92 not out and sharing a stand of 74 - the biggest of the match to date - with last man Mohammad Asif. Though he eventually became Ntini's sixth wicket of the innings, and the 301st of his Test career, Asif's worthy contribution was 92 minutes at the crease, 29 balls faced, and seven runs scored. This partnership was perhaps the vital piece of the puzzle that Pakistan needed to solve if they were going to level the series. But a lead of 141 was far from commanding.
The baton was passed back to the attack, by then deprived of the conquering Akhtar. But Asif, himself a survivor of the drugs saga, showed that his explosive performance in Centurion was no aberration, with another five-wicket haul in which he was as accurate as he was penetrative. Danish Kaneria was not in the rasping form he slipped effortlessly into in the First Test - that pitch was a more valuable ally to him - but shouldered his share of the burden and was rewarded with four wickets. Between them Asif and Kaneria bowled 90 of the 134 overs that Pakistan needed to dismiss South Africa. "It was difficult but it was something we had to do," Asif said that evening. "There was no one else to do it."
An innings of 91 by Kallis, and a last-wicket effort of 41 by Nel and Ntini, after South Africa had squandered five for 95, pushed the lead to a respectable 190. Pakistan were eight without loss at stumps, and all boded well for them for the fourth day. But South Africa's admirable fighting qualities surged to the fore: they snapped up three wickets before lunch. When Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam went early in the second session, Pakistan were 92 for five and the South Africans' nostrils flared.
The sharp whiff of adrenalin was in the air as Kamran Akmal, who had dropped numerous catches behind the wicket, took guard with the blatantly self-assured Younis Khan. Akmal's first few runs came by way of blazing comets through or over the slips. Younis, who had been on five when Pollock spilled an awkward return catch, cheekily applauded Akmal's edgy early success.
But luck soon went out of the equation and the runs came easily enough. Akmal scored his share diligently, while Younis collected his booty with a satisfied swagger and on the stroke of tea hit the winning runs.
14 JUNE 14
Another bloody hot day outside. At one point I found myself standing half in shade and half out and I could feel the left side of my body absolutely roasting under the heat. The thermometer read 100 degrees again. It's almost as if it's stuck on that number and has been for the past week.
Good news to report, my hamstrings just today, after 3 weeks, finally felt normal. I knew this because I went down to squat to take a picture of my growing bell peppers and I didn't wince in pain. I woke up and didn't want to scream as my feet touched the ground. The world somehow seemed much shinier and prettier that it had been in the previous three weeks. I was loving life.
Also today, loving my childhood. Well, the one I imagine I had eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Make no mistake, my brother and I were never allowed to have sugary cereals or any cereal with dyes in it. My mom absolutely insisted upon us not getting those things. So as kids we ate things like Cheerios, Grape Nuts, Crispix, Wheat-a-Bix, Corn Flakes, and Raisin Brand. However, every chance we got...a friend or families house spending the night, there was a chance to get at and finally taste those cereals we dreamed about like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, arguably the best cereal on earth for the simple and delicious fact that when you're done chewing down those cinna-sugar flakes that taste like mini crisped waffles, the eternal problem of what to do with all that leftover milk is solved by the mere fact that is so caked with cinna-sugar flavor, that it tastes like its own drink. This process of slurping down the now flavored milk that remains IS the reason that many will agree, that Cinnamon Toast Crunch is arguably THE best cereal.
Now that my childhood is dead, and not too many people would still consider me as a child, I find myself on occasion going down the cereal aisle, past the brans, and wheat this or that, and organic gluten free, dye free boxes that adulthood has led me to believe I am supposed to eat for something called "balance", and settling on the box with friendly looking baker with glasses on it. As and adult, I know the 12 pounds of sugar per bowl is bad for me, I know I can't go back to my childhood or life before I knew the words "diabetes," but for one fleeting period of my life, I am young again. I am sitting in front of the tv watching cartoons and doing flips on the lawn for hours, and gabbing with my next door neighbor and best friend. I feel happy. I feel joy. I forget about bills, and boyfriends, and being an adult. I slurp the milk down, some of it dribbling to my chin, and I wipe it away with my sleeve as if I were right back there at those kitchen tables of my youth, and then, just like that, the moment is gone.
Llie flat on your back with your knees slightly bent and one end of the cord looped around the foot and hooked onto middle of your foot for traction. Wearing your shoes (or barefoot but you’ll want to have a sock), Slowly but steadily pull the leg toward your chest. Focus on breathing and keeping your abs engaged and hips neutral. Switch legs and repeat.

3 things to think about when you Deadlift. 1. Brace with your abs, and keep the Lumbar curve neutral. 2. Find tension in your hamstrings. 3. Stand up. Your hips and shoulders should rise at the same time off the floor. #crossfit #crossfitproper #havefundocrossfit Athlete in the picture: @mikexlongo

03-21-1978 in Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic. Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1994. Cristian Antonio Guzmán is a Dominican baseball infielder who is currently a free agent. Guzmán was acquired by the Minnesota Twins in 1998 from the New York Yankees organization as part of the Chuck Knoblauch trade. In 2001, Guzmán was named to the AL All-Star team and posted career bests with 10 home runs and a .302 batting average. He was a key part of the Twins teams that won three consecutive American League Central titles from 2002-2004. While a Twin, he led the American League in triples in 2000 (20), 2001 (14) and 2003 (14). His total of 20 in 2000 was only the tenth time a player had reached that number in the last 70 years. After becoming a free agent, Guzmán signed a $16.8 million, four-year contract with the Washington Nationals for the 2005 season but then proceeded to have the worst year of his career. As the full-time shortstop, he was batting .192 at the end of August, but rallied in September, hitting .325, which helped bring his average up to .219. Three days after the disastrous 2005 season, Guzmán had eye surgery, which he credited as a prime reason for his resurgence in the following years. Guzmán was sidelined for the entire 2006 campaign with a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, but returned in 2007 as the Nationals' starting shortstop following the trade of second baseman José Vidro to the Seattle Mariners and the move of Felipe López to second base. On March 30, 2008, Guzmán got the first hit in the history of Nationals Park, a broken bat single to right off Atlanta Braves starter Tim Hudson. He followed with the first run in the history of the park, after an RBI double by Nick Johnson. He made the NL All-Star team as the Nationals' lone representative in 2008. He ended up playing third base in the All-Star Game, and made some crucial fielding plays at that position, even though he had previously only played shortstop as a major leaguer. On August 28, 2008, Guzmán hit for the cycle against the Los Angeles Dodgers; only the second cycle in Nationals history. Guzman signed a two-year contract extension to stay with the Nats. He finished the 2008 season as 4th the league in hits and batting average by the all-star break in 2009, he was fourth among active players for triples. On July 31, 2010, the Texas Rangers acquired Guzmán from the Nationals for two minor leaguers. Guzmán signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians on February 21, 2012. After suffering a strained hamstring during spring training, he was released by the Indians on March 28. His career stats:1999 – 2004 Minnesota Twins; 2005 – 2010 Washington Nationals; : 2010 Texas Rangers. Career stats: 11 seasons: G:1406 / AB:5382 / R:727 / H:1459 / HR:62 / RBI:467 / BA:0.271 (current stats as summer 2012).

South Africa's bowlers, led by the unhittable spin of Roelof van der Merwe, pulled an improbable victory out of the jaws of defeat as they successfully defended a meagre target of 129 and snuck home by a solitary run to secure the Group D bragging rights in a scrappy but compelling dead-rubber tussle at Lord's.
At the halfway mark of the match, it seemed there could be only one winner, after South Africa had squandered a platform of 47 for 0 after their Powerplay overs to dribble to a disappointing 20-over total of 128 for 7. But New Zealand's response never emerged from second gear. A 54-ball 57 from Brendon McCullum set the platform, but his team-mates failed to dive in, and bizarrely they ran out of steam with six wickets still standing.
The bulk of the credit belonged to van der Merwe, who put a momentum-squandering six-ball duck behind him to concede a mere 14 runs from his four overs, as well as capturing both of New Zealand's dangermen. McCullum was stumped by a distance as he gave the charge and missed, while Ross Taylor swished flat-footedly and was bowled for 22 from 31 balls, a peculiarly ponderous innings that was compounded by a tweaked hamstring that hampered his mobility in the second half of his knock.
McCullum had begun his innings with typical belligerence, cracking three fours from his first seven deliveries as New Zealand put 19 on the ball in just two overs. But at the other end, his support was in short supply. Martin Guptill miscued Dale Steyn to mid-on for 5 before Neil Broom was caught and bowled by a lunging Jacques Kallis for 1, and at the end of the Powerplays, New Zealand had slipped to a sluggish 35 for 2.
With the pitch slowing up, the run-rate went with it, and South Africa's spinners took full advantage. Taylor and McCullum added 56 for the third wicket in 11 overs, as van der Merwe and Johan Botha took the pace off the ball to tormenting effect, and by the time Jacob Oram arrived to reinject some urgency, the requirement was hovering around two runs a ball.
The final scoreline was misleadingly tight. New Zealand failed to hit a single six in their innings, and they would not have come close had it not been for a freakish yorker from Steyn that bounced out of a foothole and over the keeper's head for four byes in the penultimate over. With eight needed from two balls, Oram inside-edged through fine leg to keep the contest alive, but couldn't clear the field with his final baseball-style swing.
It was a disappointing denouement for New Zealand, as South Africa successfully defended the lowest winning total ever made in T20Is, but it was vital match practice nonetheless. Deprived of the services of their captain, Daniel Vettori, who has been struggling with a shoulder problem, New Zealand turned instead to the lanky seam of Ian Butler, and the spin and swing of Nathan McCullum and Scott Styris, who sent down a combined analysis that would have graced a 50-over game: 4 for 41 from ten overs.
Fresh from their 130-run dispatching of Scotland in their opening fixture at The Oval, South Africa seemed to have continued in the same vein when Graeme Smith and Kallis cruised to 47 for 0 in the six Powerplay overs. But as soon as Nathan McCullum was thrown the ball by his brother and captain, Brendon, New Zealand applied a tourniquet that the clinical South Africans were unable to remove.
McCullum's first over went for just two runs, and from the start of the very next over, the rot set in. Smith called Kallis through for a quick single as his brother hurtled round to short midwicket to field. The shy beat Kallis's lunch by a fraction of an inch, whereupon Butler denied the incoming Herschelle Gibbs any early momentum by completing an over in which only one run was possible.
Gibbs, in a hurry to impose himself, then mistimed a drive at Styris to be caught-and-bowled for 3 from 7, before Butler chimed in with the biggest wicket of the lot as Smith played all around a full-length delivery and was comprehensively bowled for 33 from 35. At 63 for 3 in the 12th over, their early momentum had well and truly evaporated.
Had the result not been immaterial, there's no way that AB de Villiers, the star against Scotland, would have been held back this long. But the shuffling of the batting card did South Africa no favours. van der Merwe creaked to a six-ball duck before McCullum yorked him with a quicker ball, and when de Villiers finally appeared to belt his second ball through midwicket for four, it was only South Africa's second boundary in seven overs.
It didn't, however, signal an upturn in their fortunes. A second boundary, this time through the covers, demonstrated that de Villiers' eye was most certainly in, but so was Guptill's in the outfield, as he pulled off a direct hit from mid-off to run the dangerman out for 15 from eight balls.
Mark Boucher failed for the second innings running when he mistimed a full-toss to give Butler a deserved second, and not even JP Duminy could inject any urgency. He did his best with a brace of sixes, but then holed out moments after the second of them, caught by Broom at mid-on. Albie Morkel, a serious striker when the mood takes him, was unable to keep the strike in the dying moments of the innings, as New Zealand completed a fine effort in the field. It was not, however, good enough.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, a power five program out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, dealt Old Dominion its first home defeat since November 2015. But in the loss, ODU gained a new starting quarterback.
True freshman Steven Williams, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson H.S. in Washington, D.C., replaced starting quarterback Jordan Hoy and backup QB Blake LaRussa in the 53-23 loss.
"When you don't have a first down in the first quarter and you have no energy on the sideline because the players feel it, you have to make the move," ODU head football coach Bobby Wilder explained. "I didn't go into this game thinking [Williams] would play."
Seeing his first action, the 17 year old Williams completed 9-of-20 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Williams added 34 rushing yards on seven attempts.
"We haven't developed an identity on offense," Wilder noted. "Stevie Williams today gave us an identity. Steven Williams is the quarterback of the Old Dominion football team moving forward."
"They just said 'let's go," Williams explained of how he learned he was about to receive his first college playing time. "My teammates were all behind me. I just had to go do my job and we'll be fine."
Old Dominion outscored North Carolina (1-2), 16-14, in the second half, after trailing the Tar Heels, 39-7, at the half.
Prior to the game, ODU learned All-Conference USA running back Ray Lawry, the program's all-time leading rusher, has a torn hamstring. Head coach Bobby Wilder reveals the injury could keep Lawry sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Upavistha Konasana is a good preparation for most of the seated forward bends and twists, as well as the wide-leg standing poses. Upavistha refers to seating or sitting state, Kona literally means angle. This asana is good for detoxifying Kidney. Its also therapeutically beneficial for Arthritis and Sciatica.
Asana Technique
The entire procedure begins by sitting in Dandasana.
# Upavistha KonasanaLean your torso back slightly on your hands and lift and open your legs to an angle of about 90 degrees (the legs should form an approximate right angle, with the pubis at the apex).
# Press your hands against the floor and slide your buttocks forward, widening the legs another 10 to 20 degrees. As with Dandasana, if you can`t sit comfortably on the floor, raise your buttocks on a folded blanket.
# Rotate your thighs outwardly, pinning the outer thighs against the floor, so that the knee caps point straight up toward the ceiling.
# Reach out through your heels and stretch your soles, pressing though the balls of the feet.
# With your thigh bones pressed heavily into the floor and your knee caps pointing up at the ceiling, walk your hands forward between your legs. Keep your arms long. As with all forward bends, the emphasis is on moving from the hip joints and maintaining the length of the front torso. As soon as you find yourself bending from the waist, stop, re-establish the length from the pubis to the navel, and continue forward if possible.
# Increase the forward bend on each exhalation until you feel a comfortable stretch in the backs of your legs.
# Stay in the pose 1 minute or longer. Then come up on an inhalation with a long front torso.
The target points of this asana for the body are Hamstrings, Calves, Hips, Thighs, Knees, Spine and Groins.
Suggestion: Beginners might not be able to bring the torso forward toward the floor. Take a bolster or a thickly rolled blanket and lay it on the floor in front of you, its long axis perpendicular to your pelvis. Exhale into the forward bend and lay your torso down on this support.
Benefits of Upavistha Konasana
# The posture stretches the insides and backs of the legs.
# The entire asana stimulates the abdominal organs.
# Strengthens the spine.
# Calms the brain.
# Releases groins.
Precautions
In case of Lower-back injury: Sit up high on a folded blanket and keep your torso relatively upright.
