Another view of the evening sand storm over Mesquite Flat Dunes earlier this month.
It was hard to cook in the wind in the campground, but at least the wind kept the impression of heat down!

A massive dust storm called a haboob hit Phoenix, AZ in the evening of July 5, 2011. It was over a mile tall and 30-50 miles wide.
Here it is completely covering South Mountain looking south from near Baseline and 16th St.

Yesterday was kind of our bonus start day of my final monsoon workshop of the summer which officially began today...and Karen and Paula met me in Tucson around 3pm...because we wanted to make sure we had enough time to catch any storms that hit Phoenix and created a big ol' dust storm on I-8 later.
Only we were about 10 hours too early haha! But we had a great day, hung out near Mammoth at sunset watching lightning strikes, then near Eloy/Arizona City for more dust and lightning. We were north of Casa Grande and got hit with dust again, and were turning around to head back south when my buddy John Sirlin texted and said the wall of dust was pretty epic, so it kicked our asses into gear (Thanks buddy) and we raced to I-8 and got through the dust to Vekol road and it was an amazing sight. But too dark there, so we went all the way to Gila Bend to use the city lights in our favor and watched this great haboob with an awesome shelf over it hit us around 1:15am.
Such a spectacular sight to see coming out of the darkness at us...the blue color in the image is lightning flashing behind the dust storm.
A frame from a time-lapse I shot with the Sony A7R3 with the Sigma 14-24mm. F/2.8, ISO 5000...I'm incredibly stoked about this time-lapse...best I've ever gotten at night, and the shelf was so awesome...a great way to kick off this working. I know Karen and Paula had a blast!

Well my final monsoon workshop of the summer was utterly fantastic. Two haboobs, tons of lightning and cool storms, and it couldn't possibly have been more fantastic to have Karen Wright and Paula Corrette-Fay along for it. Two sweet ladies, they endured late nights, little sleep, crazy dust and windy conditions. Not to mention nerve-racking close lightning on one occasion :) And now that she saw my storm chaser diet that includes quite a few McDonald's cheeseburgers, Paula is worried about my diet
But big-time thanks to Ruth Montgomery for letting me use her house for both my workshops this summer...she's the sweetest woman I know, cooks such amazing food and takes care of all of us. I'm so thankful to be her friend and have her in my life!
This photo was taken two nights ago which turned out to be our last chase. Karen really wanted to see a haboob and it was fantastic to be able to deliver on that because the past few years have been slow on that front.
This was looking towards Maricopa and vicinity along I-8. The northern edge of the storm looked a lot more defined than the stuff rolling down the interstate, so we stopped to time-lapse that direction and to take some pics. Gorgeous sunset light and a wonderful haboob.
Wildebeest laying low. This sudden dust storm- possibly a Haboob type sand storm(look it up!), obliterated visibility. We had to literally stop on the Nossob River road. No windows went down for photos for quite some time. Eventually we were able to slowly and cautiously follow the side of the road. The main front seemed to last 40 minutes or so but it was windy all evening. Being our last evening in the park we had prebooked a cabin duplex and man were we smiling... no outdoor cooking or tenting in a sand storm. Lots of people in the restauraunt that night.Nov 1st dust storm near Twee Rivieren, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa
An incredible Haboob was kicked up yesterday in Southern, Arizona as severe storms rolled through the area. Chased this thing for several hours as it roared over mountains like they were toys
Aug. 11, two major dust storms (haboob) hit the city of Phoenix. 1st one arrived mid morning, with fierce winds, followed by torrential rain. 2nd storm warning came in for that evening. A couple of us bravely/foolishly ventured into the open desert near Superstition Mountain, to find a good vantage point to photograph the event. Nature didn't let us down. Needless to say, it was exciting and unnerving to be standing there with a big aluminum Manfrotto tripod, as bolts of lightning came down all around us! :)
Superstition Mtn, with the thunderstorm behind and to the south of it.

This photo is 180 degrees from "A drive through the Rub Al Khali_SE". www.flickr.com/photos/jakelley/21547065940/in/album-72157...
As I was concentrating on photographing the other landscape, I could feel the wind starting to pick up. I turned around and could not believe the sight. This was my first experience with an "HABOOB"; a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric gravity current or weather front. Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world. The tallest dunes on the horizon are over 100 feet. The estimated height of the dust cloud of fine sand is over 500 feet.

I rarely, if ever, post photos from years ago. I tend to hate my processing even as recent as 2012. I feel like I’ve really grown into a more polished look (with lots of room yet to grow), so looking back is rough.
But…when an image is one I love enough, I may actually go back and re-edit the thing. And that is the case here. I may have posted this before, but this time it’s been processed using my staple of luminosity masking.
The story behind this photograph, which I just realized a few days ago…is that it’s July 4th, 2011, which was just a day before the big historic haboob hit on July 5th. In many interviews I’ve done since then, people always ask “why was that dust storm so massive?” And I usually say something like “Well, it was early in the season, we hadn’t had a good dust storm yet, or even a good storm…drought…” etc.
But in reality…this was the scene the day before just south of Phoenix along Riggs Road. So we’d already had a dust storm prior to the big one. This one turned out to be fairly weak after a bit, but it’s still a nice wall of dust. Makes the next day seem even more intense because the storms were so strong that they kicked up even more dust after this one rolled through.
I love this image because of the dead tree, the dust wall and that epic, dying monsoon thunderstorm. It also marked one of the first timelapses I did, but I’m so embarrassed by the mistakes I made, I’ll never post it. Suffice to say…I sincerely wish I had done that one correctly, because this was a beautiful scene. But I think it was the beginning of my love for capturing the motion of dust storms.

This morning started out dismal. Rain clouds smothered the sky leaving little to no hope of a sunrise. As I white knuckled my way up Mt. Nebo trying to avoid a death match with vagrant deer in the dark, I finally found my way to the top of the summit.
Mount Nebo is the southernmost and highest mountain in the Wasatch Range of Utah. Named after the biblical Mount Nebo overlooking Israel, which is said to be the place of Moses' death, it is the centerpiece of the Mount Nebo Wilderness, inside the Uinta National Forest.
Moses parted the Red Sea, and it almost felt like he parted the cloudy skies, giving me this wonderful vista with angry clouds that looked like they were coming right for me.
I had to wander out into this mud slewn field to get closer to the minimal flower offerings. Mud caked on my hiking boots made my footing slippery. I cracked a few shots in the tin and started heading back to my car and by the time I got to it, dark forboding clouds loomed over me. Lighting cracked over head and rain downpoured on my camera gear as I quickly got inside my car. I wondered, what would it feel like to get struck by lightning.

A large haboob rolls over South Mountain as it prepares to completely engulf the city of Phoenix, Arizona on September 6th, 2014.
I almost always go for a wide-angle when shooting dust storms, but I went with two different cameras for this one and totally love the compression you get with the 50mm lens.
I was pretty drained after this past summer...but I have to say, I think I'm over it now. Missing storms already and am looking forward to the plains and monsoon next year.
National Weather Service issued a Dust storm warning Tuesday evening. Braved the wind and dirt to capture the front roll into the neighborhood.
The warnings from the National Weather Service sounded pretty benign at first, then were upgraded rather abruptly as the storm gathered strength. As the leading edge approached, I could tell it was going to be a good one. That's South Mountain in the background, roughly 1,200 vertical feet from the valley floor. The height of the dust cloud is easily 3,000 feet or more.
It’s Monsoon season here in AZ which traditionally means late afternoon thunderstorms. This year the only thing it has resulted in so far is a lot of dust storms (haboobs) and no rain. Last night I thought we were in for it but the storm skirted to the south of us. The good thing was I managed to get some cool lightning shots from my roof here in suburbia without getting soaked or electrocuted!!

Weekend photo editor Jack Kurtz said, "The first haboob of the season is always big news in Phoenix. Last night's was no exception. It has the classic haboob shape. It looks like a monster devouring the farm land of the West Valley."

Vehicles along Interstate 10 try to get out of the way of the storm. Traffic was slow moving north and once the cloud hit, the freeway was empty as police shut it down a few miles south.

The Chicagoland area had a wild looking dust storm! Here is what it looked like in the late afternoon from my Orland Park, Illinois neighborhood! It blew in at 6:39 PM and had already cleared up by 6:45 PM (CDT). In the 34 years that I have lived here, I have ever experienced a dust storm!

I sat on the edge of the parking lot at the Rustler's Rooste just off of Pointe Parkway on South Mountain last night and watched a huge complex of thunderstorms move into the Phoenix area. There was an excellent lightning display far to the east and south. It wasn't until the wind started kicking up that I realized a haboob was coming.
The emergency alert on my phone went off, followed by the muted sound of the same alert coming from the phones of everyone sitting on the patio having dinner and drinks. I turned to the south and just barely saw the dust being lit up by the sky glow from the city. It was coming, and fast. This bolt of lightning struck behind the wall of dust and I finally saw how large it was. I spent the next 30 minutes in my car being buffeted by 60mph wind gusts as the dust blew in. I thought about leaving, but I'm glad I stuck around. After the dust cleared out, I was treated to one of the best lightning shows I've ever seen!
