A revisited Monsoon season storm chasing image in B&W. As I post this, a raging monsoon storm is crashing thunder, lighting up the sky, and dumping rain, outside tonight.

White sands national monument, New Mexico.

on the way down to albuquerque the other night we drove through a massive dust storm. I had never experienced anything quite like it...

The combination of a bit of early morning fog and remnants of a west Texas haboob created unusually diffuse lighting on a Snowy Egret on Armand Bayou.

I've learned a few valuable lessons over the years of chasing severe weather. One of them is to be extremely cautious of the dirt & dust that is kicked up in the early storms of the season. I spend hundreds of $$$ on keeping my lens clean. I should say lenses since I have multiple cams. Meaning I don't get my cams out for the dirt. Yes its going to happen but not again on the first storms of the year... Please note that you can see the haze of the dirt flying in on the back side of the storm it was nasty.

It was good to see the return of the first storms of the season here in South Central Nebraska. This was the same system that produce all those tornadoes in Iowa, but this was the day before. (Someone messaged me & asked why I wasn't chasing Iowa) Real reason is its Way East... Ya I could have gone but I had some other responsibilities & want to save the $ for fuel for later chase dates... There will be more storms!

While the rest of the US has seen its share of severe weather this springtime 2023. Nebraska has a very limited amount of nice weather, let alone nicer temps as spring approaches. Just last week we had a winter squall come through with 6 inches of snow. So yes there was snow still on the ground in a few places as temps reached 70 here for the first time this year.

I need to get out & grasp a few snaps before the haboob swept over the city. (Dust Storm)

Officially my first of 2023, can't wait to see what's next!

Aug. 11, two major dust storms (haboob) hit the city of Phoenix. 1st one arrived mid morning, with fierce winds, followed by torrential rain. 2nd storm warning came in for that evening. A couple of us bravely/foolishly ventured into the open desert near Superstition Mountain, to find a good vantage point to photograph the event. Nature didn't let us down. Needless to say, it was exciting and unnerving to be standing there with a big aluminum Manfrotto tripod, as bolts of lightning came down all around us! :)

Monsoon thunderstorm to the East, vs. Dust Storm approaching from the South. It wasn't a big one, dust wall was less than a mile high. Wind speed did hit 62 mph (100 kmph) in some parts of the city.

A dust storm 'haboob' approaching from the southwest ahead of a thunderstorm as seen form my home north of Phoenix.

Last week I took a trip to Arizona and Nevada. What an incredible adventure that was, I got so many amazing photos and experienced so many new thing, including a haboob! You may have heard it in the news recently, I was in it!

Anyways, I took this photo when I was on my way to Sedona and these red rock formations were just incredible to see for the first time. It's way different Vermont, that is for sure!

National Weather Service issued a Dust storm warning Tuesday evening. Braved the wind and dirt to capture the front roll into the neighborhood.

The Devil's Cornfield, Death Valley National Park, California

The title reflects how I feel every time I walk through the Valley of Dreams. The temps were topping low 100s on this trip in New Mexico, which made shooting at sunset rather pleasant. Every day at 7 pm, a mini-haboob would come that forced me to wear a respirator to prevent biting the dust.

Water rushing from the north through a dry river bed. Strong winds from the south. Kicks up the dust. Southwest Arizona USA. Full frame. No crop. No post processing.

A haboob forming on the horizon

East Hump takes this stack train over to number two track here at Midway while bringing them up to Rollins Avenue. The light soon-after went south do to an encroaching haboob of dirt kicked up in the west from an obscenely windy day.

Just when you thought everything was okay.

Some more of the fireworks shots I took a couple nights ago. These are all composite shots.

I hope everyone is the Valley escaped the massive dust storm we had last night without losing power or and damages. If you got rain, I hate you. (just kidding) There was lightning all around us last night and not one drop of rain at our house. I'm sure glad the dust storm didn't come through when we were sitting along the road waiting for the fireworks to start!!!

Hope you are all having a good week. Do a rain dance.....we need a good soak to settle all the dust!

I stole this link from my friend Lynne's stream. If you've never seen a Haboob, this is what it looks like and this is what our weather was last night. Just click on 'Haboob'.
