The historic High Bridge over the Green River near Flat Rock, NC

Ingjalshóll Church stands as a striking landmark on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, surrounded by vast open fields and dramatic skies. Built in 1903, it is considered one of the oldest concrete churches in the world. Its isolated location enhances the sense of tranquility and history, making it a perfect subject for landscape photography. The contrast between the white church and the rugged Icelandic terrain creates a captivating visual.

The most historic portions of the Alhambra were largely built in the mid-13th century by the Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current palace and walls. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. It was taken over by the Catholic Christian monarchy of the region in 1492, triggering a period of Jewish and Muslim expulsion from Europe (or in cases, forced conversion). At that point in time, Muslims had been in this part of Europe for 800 years, longer than Europeans have been in North America!

The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a must see for anyone visiting western Europe!

Historic Winton 2016

If you are not French, it’s likely you haven’t ever heard the word “Saintonge”, and have no clue what it means. If you are French, it’s probably the same thing. Unless, that is, you are a fan of Romanesque, in which case you know that Saintonge, that small region of France centered around the town of Saintes (hence the name), not far from the Atlantic Ocean, just North of Bordeaux... features the highest density of Romanesque churches of all the country!

I had never visited that area of France, and so in the middle of October 2021, I took that long overdue trip and stayed two weeks in Saintes, driving left and right daily to photograph all the most significant Romanesque churches... and unfortunately leaving out many others, as they are so thick on the ground!

Being by nature a human activity, even the best and purest of arts can, in time, overdo itself and teeter upon the brink of baroque, exaggeration and overabundance. Built around 1160, about ten years after its magnificent neighbor in Rétaud (which we have seen a few days ago), the Notre-Dame church in Rioux is largely regarded among specialists as having gone slightly over the top in terms of outside decoration.

I have seen the exact same thing with the enclos paroissiaux (“parish enclosures”) in Brittany: the desire to do better and grander than the neighbors, combined with the existence of generous financial means, often leads to an overdoing of things in which the spiritual appears to be drowned in a wave of refinement and superficiality.

This almost exaggerated decoration is often cited as one of the chief reasons why this church was only listed as a Historic Landmark in 1903, while its neighbor in Rétaud was listed in 1862. In the late 1950s, François Eygun, Director of Historic Antiquities, wrote: “This is no more the elegant richness, but the exaggeration of a quality pushed beyond the limits of the reasonable and into bad taste.”

We, visitors of the 21st century, may take a more lenient approach... or maybe it is our own taste that has been distorted over the years by lack of backbone, cheap and self-fulfilling enjoyment (read: selfies!) and reality TV... I will let my viewers decide.

Strangely enough, the façade is probably the most understated part of this church. The top part of the bell tower is from the 15th century, but all the rest shows a remarkable restraint, with only the Virgin in a mandorla and abstract motifs on the voussures around and over the main door.

and abandoned cars in Uruguay

Once again in Taylor, Texas, this old build was built in 1887, when Taylor was a prosperous farming hub. But sometime over the last 131 years this building has been abandoned and fallen into decay, which is a real shame. For 118 pictures in 2018, #87, Historic.

Crazy-awesome diner, built by Silk City Diner in Red Hook, NY. Intact with few alterations, from the 1920s. Also, the food is really good. Highly recommend it! (And they make egg creams.)

In Jonesborough, Tennessee. Oak Hill School was built in 1886 to serve the community of Knob Creek. The building served local residents as a school and as a center for community events until the school was closed in the 1950s. The school sat unoccupied (except for a few bales of hay) until the expansion and development of Johnson City encroached. . The property owners approached the Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum about saving the structure by relocating it to Jonesborough. The school building was moved the seven miles from Knob Creek to Jonesborough and placed in its current location behind the Visitors Center. Once in the new location, Oak Hill School was lovingly restored to the way that it may have appeared in the 1890s.

The Mormon Row Historic District consists of a line of homestead complexes along the Jackson-Moran Road near the southeast corner of Grand Teton National Park, in the valley called Jackson Hole. The rural historic landscape's period of significance includes the construction of the Andy Chambers, T.A. Moulton and John Moulton farms from 1908 to the 1950s. Six building clusters and a separate ruin illustrate Mormon settlement in the area and comprise such features as drainage systems, barns, fields and corrals. Apart from John and T.A. Moulton, other settlers in the area were Joseph Eggleston, Albert Gunther, Henry May, Thomas Murphy and George Riniker.

The area is also known as Antelope Flats, situated between the towns of Moose and Kelly. It is a popular destination for tourists and photographers on account of the historic buildings, the herds of bison, and the spectacular Teton Range rising in the background. The alluvial soil to the east of Blacktail Butte was more suitable than most locations in Jackson Hole for farming, somewhat hampered by a lack of readily available water. The Mormon homesteaders began to arrive in the 1890s from Idaho, creating a community called "Gros Ventre", with a total of 27 homesteads. The Mormon settlers tended to create clustered communities, in contrast to the isolated homesteads more typical of Jackson Hole.

Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

This two-storeyed former hotel was constructed in 1885 for Brisbane publican Daniel Costigan. It replaced a previous, less substantial structure on the site, which had functioned as the Plough Inn since 1864. The new building was erected during South Brisbane's heyday and was part of the 1880s boom-time reconstruction of Stanley Street premises.

The building was designed by architect Alexander B. Wilson, who is more known for his domestic work. It was built by contractor Abraham James, whose tender of £3,300 was accepted in March 1885.

The hotel, prominently located in central Stanley Street, serviced the commercial heart of South Brisbane. Its proximity to the South Brisbane wharves ensured its popularity amongst those engaged in shipping interests.

Initially the L-shaped interior comprised on the ground floor: a central hall, staircase, dining room, two private rooms (probably for dining also), bar, parlour, storage spaces, billiard room, and lavatories; the first floor contained fourteen guest rooms and a bathroom. A verandah along the back of the building connected it to a detached single-storey kitchen. A cellar completed the facilities.

The building has been altered a number of times since its initial construction. In 1922, additions were made by contractors Robertson and Corbette, following the designs of GHM Addison and Son. It is thought that the street awning was added at this time.

In 1987 the building was modified to function as a tavern during Expo '88. Most of the internal walls were removed, the central fireplace and chimney were taken out, and the interior was re-fitted. Also the front verandah was widened, the rear verandah extended, and windows and doors replaced at this time.

In 1991 - 1992 a conservation plan for the Plough Inn was prepared by Bruce Buchanan architects, and the interior was fully refurbished. The front verandah was also reconstructed.

Historic Conwy: dominating the background is the magnificent Conwy Castle, built by King Edward I between 1283 & 1289 at a cost of £15,000. Next, snug beneath the castle ramparts, is Conwy Suspension Bridge, built by Thomas Telford between 1822 & 1826. To the left of the suspension bridge is the portal of Conwy's Tubular railway bridge, now the only one of its kind following the destruction of the Britannia Tubular Railway Bridge, that crossed the nearby Menai Straits, by fire in 1970. The Conwy Tubular Railway Bridge was constructed by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1846, and still performs the job for which it was designed, namely carrying the main line across the River Conwy. On the right can be seen the 'new' Conwy road bridge that replaced the suspension bridge, which opened in 1958.
