This historic church was constructed in 1875. At that time native people were still hunting bison on the prairies. The young nation of Canada was only eight years old; the Canadian Pacific Railway still nine years in the future. And this church would become the heart of a thriving community, Morleyville, and for a time the largest settlement in what would be southern Alberta.
UPDATE: Sadly this oldest church in southern Alberta was totally destroyed by a fire on May 22, 2017.

A view looking east on E. Main from N. Walnut St. in downtown Champaign. The five buildings in this view on the north side of E. Main all contribute to the Champaign Downtown Commercial District listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. All were built between 1860 and 1907, and are Italianate and early 20th century commercial designs.
The most prominent building on this block is the four-story building with a center atrium that was constructed for the Jos. Kuhn & Company in 1907. Jos. Kuhn & Co. is a longtime outpost for men's attire that gradually grew until four of the five buildings in this block were being utilized by the company. Although the company's footprint today is smaller, it is still in business today at the same location.

I make this image public for getting an impression of the AVIF format (can be opened in the latest IrfanView, Chrome and Firefox): Link to AVIF in Google Drive
The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.
Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.
The uploaded JPEG is about 17MB in size, the AVIF 1.9MB.
This sample is generated using the avifenc.exe command line encoder for windows.
I used this parameters:
avifenc.exe --cicp 2/2/1 -r limited -y 420 -j 6 --min 30 --max 40 --minalpha 30 --maxalpha 40 in.png out.avif
The result is:
- 6 threads used (for my 6 CPU cores)
- to colorspace YUV420 (422 and 444 is not supported by the Windows AV1 extension)
- 12 bit per channel
The Vachel Lindsay Memorial Bridge joins East and West Lake Drives at Recreation Point on Lake Springfield. The Bridge was built in 1933 and 1934 to simulate a multiple arch bridge. The structure is really a series of cantilevers with heavy counter weighted abutments. There are eleven spans which total 1,394 feet in length. The Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company of Kansas City, Missouri made the original engineering studies, designed the major structures and acted as the consultant throughout the entire construction period. This bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931), for whom the bridge is named, was an American poet. A native of Springfield, Illinois, he is considered a founder of modern singing poetry, as he referred to it, in which verses are meant to be sung or chanted.

Sandomierz: historic town in south-eastern Poland.
It was a royal city of the Polish Crown and functioned as a regional administrative centre from the High Middle Ages to the 19th century.
Sandomierz is one of the oldest and historically most significant cities in Poland.
The first known historical mention of the city comes from the early 12th-century, when the chronicler Gallus Anonymus ranked it together with Kraków and Wrocław as one of the main cities of Poland.
Thanks to the Wikipedia;)

The Church and its chapels (La Iglesia de San Francisco), which were considered sacred places.
Together, Church and Convent encompass three hectares including 13 cloisters (six of them major), three churches, and a large courtyard. In total, about 40,000 square meters of construction. San Francisco follows the classical typology of medieval monasteries. The main Church is the guiding axis and from there the cloister galleries extend: the refectory, the chapterhouse, and winery. These define a quadrangular courtyard, with the four respective pandas, or galleries: that of the chapter room, the refectory, the converts, and the mandatum. In addition to the basic dependencies of a convent, there were areas devoted to health care, education, crafts, a garden, and even a jail (to maintain strict discipline). The kitchen and dispensery operated in the cloister of services.

Walking from the Old Town’s narrow colonial streets into this open plaza reveals one of the finest sights in all of Ecuador: a sweeping cobblestone plaza backed by the mountainous backdrop of Volcán Pichincha, and the long, whitewashed walls and twin bell towers of Ecuador’s oldest church.

The Public Square (Plaza de San Francisco) was a purely urban space, demarcated and connected to various public activities (teaching, market, water supply).

Sad part of our History.
In pre-Hispanic Quito, the current lands of the Church and Convent of San Francisco were occupied by the royal palace of the Inca Huayna Cápac, before the advance of the armies commanded by the Spaniards from the south and the impossibility of defending the city the indigenous general Rumiñahui arranged the total destruction of it. In the city fire the palace was destroyed and buried under a huge amount of rubble and garbage. One of Rumiñahui's soldiers was the great-grandfather of the indigenous Cantuña, who as an eyewitness to the events had full knowledge of what was buried in the place. The construction of the church and convent of San Francisco began around 1537, just three years after the Spanish foundation of the city, with the completion of a provisional temple that was maintained until 1550, when construction of the current building began and which was completed around 1680. Although the building was officially inaugurated in 1705.

I am going to take a break today from posting new shots. My family took a lot of photos and some how I ended up with an archive of 100's of old shots.. I have slowly been scanning them and thought I would share a few of my favorites with you. This is my grandfather (James Sr., I am the 3rd) and grandmother (Fannie) "courting". This was shot somewhere around Gainesville Texas in 1913 or 1914.
