I saw this little snail on my garden table heading in its own pace straight to the potted sunflower, not even hesitating when I came pretty close with my camera. That is determination!

I then moved the snail to another safe, green area.

Such a pretty winter finch, rosy red male pine grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator) often just sits at the seed feeder, making other birds (chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, other grosbeaks,) hesitate before coming to the feeder.

They are never aggressive toward other birds, perhaps it is just their presence, or their size that makes other birds hesitate. Female grosbeaks however are not intimidated.

I hesitated a long while to upload this picture. Because the two separate pictures were already shown earlier. (www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/20141085426, www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/26091580295). But the combination shows so much the grandeur of the Takakkaw Falls, that i decided I put it up on flickr. I used the panorama function on my Sony, which I regret because sometimes it gives strange patterns, and it took quite awhile to get rid of it. Next time just three separate pictures and stitch them in PS.

From 11 june till the 25th of july, I travelled in Canada. Starting in Brighton ontario, where my sister lives at the border of an amazing part of lake Ontario, I flew to Vancouver, and Vancouver island where I took the boat at Port Hardy to take part 1 of the Inside passage, to Prince Rupert in BC. Two days later I took part 2 to Skagway in Alaska, from where i took a scenic train thorugh the Rocjies to Whitehorse and further on by car to Kluane National park in the Yukon district. Whitehorse is situated at the border of the Yukon. Frow there I flew back to Vancouver, rented a car, and travelled three weeks in the BC- and Alberta Rockies, visiting the famous, and less famous Nature parks like Banff and Jasper. Last few days back to Brighton Ontario to enjoy lake Ontario once more, before going home. A picture of my itinerary can be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152940536581759&set...).

4000 pictures later, it is quite a task to show the right stuff, although the stunning scenery garantees at least a few great shots to share. Objective will be to make a book (for myself mainly), and that might take a while.

I hope you will enjoy the impression of my travel, one that equals earlier journeys to Alaska and south America, this journey was the first in the digital era, and equally intensive because of all the hiking activities every day on and on. I loved every minute of it.

Morning...warming to the day...quiet vapors rising...aloneness...music in the mind...eyes alert...small things moving all around...time hesitated...

Hummingbird seems to hesitate trying to decide which fake flower to get a sip from.

Viewing is not restricted in resolution, so do not hesitate to zoom in

I make this image public for getting an impression of the AVIF format (can be opened in the latest IrfanView, Chrome and Firefox): Link to AVIF in Google Drive

The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.

Keep in mind that the resulting image has just 800kB!!!

Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.

This sample is generated using the avifenc.exe command line encoder for windows.

I used this parameters:

avifenc.exe --cicp 2/2/1 -r limited -y 420 -j 6 --min 30 --max 40 --minalpha 30 --maxalpha 40 in.png out.avif

The result is:

- 6 threads used (for my 6 CPU cores)

- to colorspace YUV420 (422 and 444 is not supported by the Windows AV1 extension)

- 12 bit per channel

My feet hesitate to mar

The untouched masterpiece..

- Lynn Reket

This was taken on our 12 km barefoot walk along the shores of PEI on our vacation last month. It was hard not to think of the desert when spying such a vast space of pure sand. We avoided disrupting beautiful sculpted scenes like this one. Sometimes we moved closer to the shore to get some relief from the warm, soft sand to walk on wet sand that just made our feet sink each step we took. It was a marvelous experience and the sand was the best pumice stone ever for the well developed callouses on my feet.

I haven't as much time at the moment to post photos so when I do I am likely to add a lot at once, hope you are not overwhelmed.

The temperature was forecast to be below freezing last night, so I brought Gracie Jo in for her second night sleeping indoors. She hissed as we passed other cats on the way to my bedroom, but didn't scratch or bite me. As soon as I woke up, I opened the outside door to the cat enclosure, then opened my window so she could escape to her outside world. I was pleased to see that she hesitated before running outside. Maybe sleeping on a bed inside wasn't so terrible, after all.

At the Kanda shinto shrine - Kanda-myōjin (神田明神). This shrine dates its roots back to 730 AD, but it has relocated a couple of times and ended up here in 1603, moved to this place by the shogun (to make place for the expanding Edo castle, though officially to guard against misfortune because of an unhappy kami). Before this, in 1309, the warrior and rebel Taira no Masakado was enshrined in the Kanda shrine as a kami. The other two deities enshrined here are Onamuchi-no-mikoto (Daikoku-sama) and Sukunahikona-no-mokoto (Ebisu-sama). The shrine was added to the Tokyo ten shrines (東京十社 - Tokyo Jissha) during the Meiji era, but the emperor hesitated to do so since Masakado had led a rebellion against the central government in Kyoto in his day. This was resolved with the kami being removed from the shrine. However he proved to be so popular that he was reinstated after the second world war.

The shrine itself, as it stands today, was built in 1934 in the Gongen style after the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 - but using concrete instead of traditional wood, which meant that it actually survived the fire bombings of the Second World War (when not much else in this area did). The shrine was very important for the warriors, and today its proximity to Akihabara has given it a bit of a special niche, selling talismans and blessings for electronic equipment (and all the usual talismans too, for good health, good luck, luck in business, etc).

"Throughout my lifetimes I'd hesitate

I'd feel some joy, but before I've shown my thanks

It became too late

And now all the way I want to find the time

To stop to say

I want to thank you Lord for giving us each new day.

Singing it so sweetly like no one else can do

Always trying something new

And I thank you Lord for giving us Pure Smokey."

~I'm Yours by Jason Mraz

For a minute I - your singing Frog, Rana Pipiens - hesitated. There it was on the west waterside of the Hortus, the hungry murderer of many kinfolk. But Grey Heron was turned away from the water searching the shrubbery for feathered fledglings. It prefers aquatic or semi-aquatic prey like Yours Truly, but I think 'pickings' were thin and Heron even ignored Fat Frog Me! With keen eyes it sought elsewhere. In any case, I was safe for now.

I plunged quietly and kicked my way to the pretty Bridge 232 - locked to the general public - leading to the so-called Overkas, the working greenhouse for the Hortus 'over the water' (on the right). That bridge was placed in 1877. Between 2016-2018 it was named for a Dutch hero against the Germans during WWII, Johan van Hulst, but that name was then given to nearby Bridge 233 (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/51642724527/in/photoli...).
