This shot of the bridge at the Chinese Garden at Lakeside, was one of the shots that I hesitated to upload for years, as the results were not too ideal at first glance.
But upon a second look, I thought that this might still be worth saving. This was shot on tripod with a roughly 60 sec long exposure at blue hour.

Koi or more specifically jinli or nishikigoi are colored varieties of the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Koi is an informal group name of the colored variants of C. rubrofuscus. Several varieties are recognized by the Japanese. Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
The Pacific black duck (Anas superciliosa), commonly known as the PBD, is a dabbling duck found in much of Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, and many islands in the southwestern Pacific, reaching to the Caroline Islands in the north and French Polynesia in the east. It is usually called the grey duck in New Zealand, where it is also known by its Maori name, pārera. This sociable duck is found in a variety of wetland habitats, and its nesting habits are much like those of the mallard, which is encroaching on its range in New Zealand. It feeds by upending, like other Anas ducks. The Pacific Black Duck is mainly vegetarian, feeding on seeds of aquatic plants. This diet is supplemented with small crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic insects. 27104
Maybe not a happy story. First, this Ostrich was photographed (recently) in the Houston Zoo. There are pros and cons about zoos and zoo photography and I hesitate to revisit that debate. Each to their own (valid) opinion. Second, unlike other zoo animals, I've actually encountered Ostriches in the wild, in the south of Sudan in 1979 while conducting a gravity survey there in the bush. The south of Sudan is now called South Sudan, a separate country from Sudan, the former north of Sudan. Sudan (the north) is currently undergoing a civil war, and South Sudan has never really been a happy place. Third, Ostriches are all over South Sudan. Their (large and sturdy) eggs can be harvested in the bush almost like chicken eggs. One egg can amply serve twelve diners for breakfast. I know; I was one of those diners. But things were different in 1979. I still have the unbroken egg shell. The yolk is blown out through small holes at top and bottom so that the shell is preserved. To repeat, things were different in 1979!

After a fatal accident involving my Nikon D850 earlier in the year, not quite being able to afford an identical replacement, I recently invested in a second hand Nikon D4S as an alternative. It might be a bit more dated, but one thing I really like about it is the built in vertical grip, meaning when I want to go portrait, I never hesitate to flip the camera to vertical shooting. The situation seemed to call for it when this red deer stag titled its head skyward to make himself known to his drifting harem, staring me down mid bellow for added impact.
Some people say that our New Year just starts when we are having a birthday, I firmly believe that.
Tomorrow is my birthday in RL and .... wow how many things happened in that "my" year. Some of them incredible, others not so much, so many plans and changes of plans, people, friendships, shows, joys, disappointments, all in only 365 particular days. I learned a lot, I laughed a lot, I cried a lot among many other things.
This "my" last year seemed like a roller coaster, where today, I leave her free of all the sensations I felt and ready to start a new journey.
To all who have been with me, thank you very much and welcome all those who are still coming!
Peace, love, rock and lots of fun, it's what I want for me and for all who are with me!

'Teneral' means it has just emerged from its final larval moult and has yet to fly or fully develop its colouration. I was privileged to see this one take its first hesitating flight.

The fiery throated hummingbird does not hesitate to protect what he feels is his. This image was taken on our recent trip to Costa Rica !! Love this species and never seem to quite get enough of them !!

The series of images was taken on a very dull day. I had to crank up the ISO to 5000 for a half decent shutter speed. Noise in all images was processed with Topaz Denoise AI..... I really like how simple and quite effective this software is... I was really pleased and I will not hesitate to convert the free trial into a purchase... Thanks so much to many of you who suggested me to try this software.... it works really well.
I call this image "Brave Heart" to give credit to our Red-winged Blackbirds who don't hesitate to attack raptors much larger and more lethal than they are. They are confident in their aerial skills, and I've never seen one attacked back, so it seems well deserved. After harassing this Red-shouldered Hawk for a few minutes the hawk was finally convinced to find more affable surroundings. An owl is a butterfly in the genus Caligo known for its huge eyespots which resemble owl eyes. They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central and South America.
Owl butterflies are very large, 65–200 mm (2.6–7.9 in). They fly only a few meters at a time so avian predators have little difficulty following them to their settling place. Fortunately they prefer to fly at dusk when few predators are around. Their Latin name Caligo means darkness.
It is possible that the eye pattern is a generalized form of mimicry. It is known that many small animals hesitate to go near patterns resembling eyes with a light-colored iris and a large pupil, which matches the appearance of the eyes of many predators that hunt by sight. The main predators of Caligo are apparently small lizards such as Anoles.

This is one from my archives. I hesitated to post it because I can remember so little about this rose and where it was taken. It could well have been in my old garden [before I downsized to my flat] as I had quite a few roses growing there. On the other hand, it could have been in a friend's garden....
