I lost sight of this red-tailed hawk and then walked off the trail looking up at the trees til I saw him chowing down and in no rush to fly off.
Hawk on my radio antenna. Returning to my house after picking blueberries I noticed a large bird on my radio antenna. I was able to retrieve my camera, went back outside and took a few shots.
The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America or worldwide. Wikipedia

Spent 10 minutes with this guy today. He flew down in front of me and walked around on the ground, not sure what he was thinking.
Tom saw this hawk while we were walking during our nature walk, but I could not see it. He kept telling me where the bird is standing until he told me "look at my finger where it is pointing", then I finally saw it. Although his vision on his right eye is not 100%, he can see things better than I do. It has been more than two years today since his last major surgery but we're still very hopeful that his vision on that eye will come back one day even not 100% but at least some.

October has been a great month here for seeing various colour morphs and sub-species of Red-tailed Hawks. I thank
Mike Borlé' for this identification.
If you are into the subtle nuances of Red-tailed Hawk types, check out Mike's Facebook site "Red-tailed Hawks of Western Canada". It is an education.

Captured in Sturgeon County, Alberta.
This young Red-tailed Hawk was feasting on a deer carcass along the road home from the Lower Rio Grande Valley on a visit to the area back in January. The size of its crop makes me think the bird had been there a while before we arrived. The whole time we were there the hawk never moved off of its prize.

This year I am trying to cross off as many bucket list images as I can. Light trails was high on my list. The curvy Hawks Nest Highway was the perfect subject. What would you like to shoot this year?
I saw this guy as I was driving to the lake. I pulled over to get this shot. Sounds like someone I know. New Britain Pa.
A Rough-legged Hawk near Gannett, Idaho
"The name "Rough-legged" Hawk refers to the feathered legs. The Rough-legged Hawk, the Ferruginous Hawk, and the Golden Eagle are the only American raptors to have legs feathered all the way to the toes."
This bird, if it is the same bird that I photographed in poor light this morning showed up a 2nd time today. The light was much better this afternoon and I was closer to the bird but the shepherds hook that holds one of my feeders was between me and the bird. IMG_6755
I have trouble keeping up and thanking everyone individually so I hope you will accept this generic "thank you." I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to view, comment and fave my photographs. It is greatly appreciated and encouraging.
I am disappointed in the price increase here at Flickr but will stick around and hope the most of the will also be here next year.
I had to check and am pretty sure this is an immature Coopers Hawk. I thought from pictures it might have been a Sharp Shinned, but the markings on the chest convince me otherwise. I'm perfectly open to being corrected if any of you think otherwise. I got lucky with this hawk as I saw it coming from a distance and was able get it in the frame for a long series of shots. This one is my favorite because of the way the light is striking its head.

In North America this panboreal Hawk breeds from Alaska to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Their winter range extends from California to Virginia. Winter records are common here. (Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta)
This image shows the legs that are completely feathered down to the base of the toes. That feature gives this Buteo its common name.
