I made this image with an Olympus OM 1 or 2 from the stern of my canoe during an archaeological survey of the Coppermine. My partner and I began our survey at the headwaters, Lac de Gras, where, years later, the big Kimberlite pipes were discovered and Canada's diamond industry began.

That was a difficult but wonderful trip, made somewhat odd because we were, by chance, following a royal canoe party (Prince Andrew, I believe) down the Coppermine, which made for some hilarious radio chatter between me, pretending to be an unctuous Conservative, and a certain famously irascible government geologist, camped on the lower Coppermine above the Arctic Circle, who was equally known for his marathon running, his taste for weed, and his hatred of all things royal :)

In the end, with the autumn gales beginning as they do in August in the Barren Lands, and our canoe carrying lots of scientifically precious prehistoric stone tools as a result of our survey, we accepted his generous offer to fly us out from that government geology camp and back to Yellowknife free of charge.

The following summer, in 1978, my Woodyard partner and I made an archaeological survey of the Rawalpindi River, which is a tributary of the Coppermine. Imagine my shock, at the trip's beginning, to see a grizzly bear running toward me in my camera's viewfinder when I turned around 180 degrees to take a picture of the river's headwaters outflow. But thank god I did turn precisely then! Oh man, that was a fire drill. We did everything wrong, were totally scared and stupid, but we survived intact (except for our minds) and later briefly radioed in to the geology expeditor that we'd had a scary bear encounter, been chased, but were OK, and were continuing the project as planned. It's a whole big hilarious story of its own, and so totally Northern.

But later, back in Yellowknife, my first-ever music gig was about to happen, backing up Ted Wesley, and he asked me who I was. I replied with my name, Frank Metcalf, amazed at this basic question from a friend. But what he wanted was my stage name. I laughed and joked and said duhhh I don't have or want a stage name. Then Ted said well it's obvious. I replied what's obvious? It was all sounding crazy. Ted said well you're Grizzly Frank. I said what the hell??? That was totally crazy. I ran from the damn bear, and was always dead honest about that. But he said everyone knows that's your name now. It was a classic WTF??? moment. Turns out the expeditor had kind of fleshed out a bunch of "details" to make the "story" much more gripping and less ridiculous than it really was.

Ted was hiring me for my first-ever gig, he wanted that name for me, so I said what the hell, OK. CBC / Radio Canada loved the "Grizzly Frank, Canada's Master of Bones" schtick and came calling repeatedly. I loved being onstage, and we were right then creating this pan-Arctic folk festival called Folk on the Rocks, which continues to this day (2022). I was on the first booking committee. It was the start of a whole huge long pile of fun, gigs, and travel for me personally, all over Canada and two festivals in Europe as well, and so I will always thank my dear departed friend Ted Wesley for his crazy idea. I guess I should thank the grizzly bear too, but that's harder :)

Shot alot of BNSF in The Dalles so will take a while to get through!

Anyway as it is in the Columbia River Gorge its fate if you pick one side of the river all the action happens on the other side. As seen whilst waiting for something on the UP to appear is BNSF 4109, 4671 and unrecorded unit on the rear working a grain train from Pillsbury, ND to Interbay, WA.

It's a Manoa thing! I happened to be up and flying because of some nice late afternoon lighting when this happened. I used the "dehaze" function on LightRoom to take away a lot of the rain effect that was over the mountain range.

Sometimes strange people make magic happen

This mural by Wongi was part of the Rise 2013 Festival in Christchurch. I spoke to Wongi after he met ROA at the Canterbury Museum. I loved the fact that he takes his dog out with him in the back of his custom painted van. I would say that Wongi has done the most legitimate street art in Christchurch.

This is a collaborative work done in collaboration with my 6-year-old grandson, Niko Felton and all the children from 0-6 who participated in the Ringling Museum Education Center painting activities on July 13, 2018. It was a pleasure to see the pure joy on the children’s faces while they were freely creating individually and together to make 3 beautiful large paintings expressing free will, the ability to cooperate, the fun of learning and interacting. The time passed by so fast and was time well spent, several of the children would have stayed longer had the time allowed.

It is one in a series I have started to help us realize how important the family unit is and that no-one should be allowed to break it up.

Reading so many articles about children being forcefully separated from their families through war, greed and hunger make me realize that we artists must address this issue head-on. No family should have to resort to becoming a refugee in order to have a country, a home, food, good health, education and the ability to make a decent living. We all belong to the human race and therefore should help and respect one another it is the right and decent thing to do. If every country in the world got together to achieve this goal it would be possible so let us make it happen.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

This is what has happened in the last few days since Pokemon Go mania hit Singapore. Everywhere, people are going to Pokespot to look for that rare Pokemon and such.

Only photographers like me and the fellow photographer in the centre of the photo here aren't too overwhelmed by this sight. Just not yet though for the time being at least. :)

At least I heard of some good stories of complete strangers helping each other out and making friends in the process myself, contrary to what the mass media often like to report on Pokemon Go. It will probably take a while at least to know what the long term effects of Pokemon Go will be.

What exactly happened under the mistletoe??

Joshua Tree National Park happens to be one of my favorite places to visit in California. Not only is the landscape beautiful and strange, but there are fantastic 4x4 roads to explore and also some of the best climbing.

Last month, I hit the park with a few good friends and we did a bit of night shooting, during the full moon.

People often ask me which flashlights I like and which ones I use and the truth is, it varies. Some of my lights are upwards of $100. Others are under $20. You absolutely do not need a $100 light to successfully light paint an image, but there are definitely reasons I love the more expensive lights I have. To light this image, I used a $17 work light by Viisliam - amzn.to/1QYG1sc.

"One Small Step"

I usually do not post the background stories of what happens when shooting Horizons. But today I

will. You see, there was this bush.

My day always begins the same way when the alarm scares the crap out of me at 3:10 am. I dress

in the dark so as not to wake my wife Mary (unless I forget to turn off the secondary backup alarm and that is a whole other story) and stagger down the stairs to start the coffee machine, usually tripping over my sleeping dog. I step outside at 3:15 to have a smoke and listen to the distant, and often not so distant, gunfire of the city of Milwaukee. That must be the golden hour of discharging firearms here. To me it is no different than the sound of crickets these days. (Oh ya, someone forgot to prep the coffee machine this morning so I cooked air) At 3:25 I fill up my mug, grab my camera and hit the road to start my work day. At 4:00 am I get to our office, take an hour getting the orders for my morning deliveries together, punch in to my digital time card and then head out into Horizon land.

As I was cutting through the back roads in Racine county at 5:45 am, as I have been doing now

for 17 years, the sun hit the Horizon with the softest of light. The sky was perfect, all I needed

was one thing that stood out in the landscape. And there it was. A bush with white flowers about

200 feet off the road. Cool. Awesome. Time to wade through knee high grass and get soaked before a

full work day and 180 orders to deliver. So I parked on the side of the road, threw on my flashers

and worked my way to that bush. Damn thing is, the closer I got the bigger it got. I should have

brought a ladder because by the time I got to the bush it was 8 feet high and about 20 feet long.

Well, I do not little things like this bother me. I worked my way to the front of this bush ( you

will notice I have no idea what this or many other plant life are called. Too much information

takes away from the beauty of the photo. LOL)

So I worked my way to the front of the bush and pushed in about 5 feet through a tangle of

branches, held my camera up as high as I could and began shooting bursts of bracketed shots. In the

photo I posted, "One Small Step", those pretty white wild flowers were eye level to me. And just to

my right and behind my that bush must have been 8 feet high. Or so I thought.

Did I mention the Red Wing Blackbirds? No? Oh, yep, they must have had nests in this bush

because as soon as I stepped in and started shooting they took flight, circled, and started diving

bombing me. I brought my camera down, took a peek at a few of the some 50 bracketed shots I took

blindly and knew I had something to work with. But with mosquitos ringing in my ears, my shoes and

socks soaked through and crazy birds wanting me dead I decided to try to get a couple more from

just a little bit to the right. Just "One Small Step". Just, you know, a little more. So I moved my

right foot over about two feet, raised the camera over my head and pointed it at the Horizon, put

my finger on the exposure button (yes, all this at once) and put my foot down.......on nothing.

There are moments you remember. Like my kids being born. Like the night I asked Mary to marry

me and ten minutes later we get rear ended. Like a first kiss. Like when the earth disappeared and

you find yourself falling backward with a camera over your head as if you are being devoured by a

giant bush and evil black birds are laughing at you. Ya, like that. That moment, falling about 8

feet down and backwards into a ravine through tangled masses of branches not quite knowing when the ride will be over. And what was the one thought going through my head? My cell phone was in my car. As I layed there in the belly of the 16 foot monster bush from hell looking at the filtered morning

light of sunrise I realized something. I realized I was laying in water and once again wet through

and through and I had an 8 hour shift yet to be done. But hell, I got the shot.

I'll be around , you can reach me on FB if you need me for anything.

Oh no, it's happened again. I went out with one thing in mind for today's photo. I took it, was delighted with the results, but instead of just walking back up the main road home, I walked back through town.

Past a shop and noticed this beautiful sculpture on a wall. I took a photo from the doorway, but it wasn't quite right.

So I went in and asked if I could take a photo and why. No problems there, but had to take about 4 shots in the end with the different lighting inside.

You might get to see what I keep taking and never upload one day, it won't move, which helps!

Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :O)

Something strange happened to me today @ the park ... I was followed by a dark butterfly. It flew with me for 20 minutes, and every time when I thought it was gone, it appeared again. Can it be explained? Or just a weird coincidence? Then again planet earth (to me) seems so magical with its seasons, births & life cycles that even with science feels unexplainable.

Even @ my age today find everything around me absolutely magical. I enjoy observing the world around me so much.

Tomorrow is the last day ... & ... then ... off from work and school almost 2 weeks ! Isn’t it a good reason to be excited?!!

Did you ever wonder what happened to the escape pod on Tatooine? The one with the droids in it? Well, wonder no more, it's not there anymore, the jawas got it.

The gigantic jawa sandcrawlers were slow. It was not a problem at all, usually there was no rush anywhere, but if there was a good reason to believe something worthwhile was in the desert, a sand skiff was used.

This time the jawas knew what they were after, C-3PO told them exactly what to look for, and where. The jawas got all the thrusters off the escape pod, it was a good catch. The moisture farmers use them to blow sand off their property. True story.

Little known fact: environmental protection programs were not very high on priority lists on Tatooine, but the jawas inadvertently did a great job keeping the deserts clean of wreckage. I think it was about time this got some exposure.

It's been a good two years since I have photographed sand. It was so much fun today. I have tried to set up a shot with that skiff several times though, but nothing ever came of it. Not to mention that old escape pod, it never worked. Until today.

I'm ALWAYS doing stupid stuff to entertain myself, I just happened to feel like sharing this time. Sorry for the poor quality! <33

uggggh I can't believe I'm letting all of you see this. :|

Because, sometimes, things happen to people and they're not equipped to deal with them.

This is what happens when I am alone on a rainy day with a camera and a tripod. Having a couple hours to post process helps too. Was kind of an adventure, although I did track leaves all through the house...

Every time I go to this place, it looks different. And you can see the difference. This is the same place as yesterday's photo. The water flow has changed the whole look of the place. Have a great Friday and Mothers Day Weekend!

SL is such a story - It's open-ended and full of twists and turns. While you thought that everything was going okay, that was when you got surprise: The plot changed abruptly, the prince turned into a frog after you kissed him, the Little Match Girl returned from nowhere, the Candy House was turned into Kitkat factory...and a stranger fell into your chapter out of sudden.

Something pretty crazy happened down here recently. A thief was being chased after hitting a jewellery store. He ran into the storm drains and jumped down a sewage vent, all out of breath breathing heavy the dude probably died within ten minutes from toxic gasses. Just waiting for him to turn up at a sewage treatment centre... But he got away.

“When worlds collide, things happen”

As we grow older, visual impairments are inevitable. There is an estimated 285 million people worldwide with a visual impairment.

What happens when the eye ages? The lens starts to lose elasticity causing blurred vision and difficulty focusing, and they can also yellow, impacting color perception and decreased recognition of blue hues. Muscles that control the pupil weaken, making it more difficult to adapt from bright to dark spaces, and vice versa. Because of the weakening muscles and decreased size of the pupil, less light is able to enter the eye. This is one reason why the older population requires higher light levels. Another reason is because the number of rods in the eye can decrease as we age, making it more difficult to see in low light.

Seniors need high light levels, but increased light levels aren’t capable of fixing everything. Light quality is just as important. If the light is of poor quality, the levels might not even matter. Lighting cannot completely solve the issues that come with growing older, but good, quality lighting can help increase visual performance and increase quality of life.

About my book.

I published a book a long time ago.

At that time, I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.

Its Japanese and English.

I will publish it for free.

For details, I explained to the Amazon site.

How to write a novel.

How to take a picture.

A sense of distance to the work.

All of these have something in common.

I wrote down what I felt and left it.

I hope my text will be read by many people.

Thank you.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

1 Photo exhibition up to that point. Did you want to go?

2 Well, what is an exhibition that you want to visit even if you go there?

3 Challenge to exhibit one work every month before opening a solo exhibition at the Harajuku Design Festa.

4 works are materials and silhouettes. Similar to fashion.

5 Who is your favorite artist? What is it? Make it clear.

6 Creating a collage is exactly the same as taking photos. As I wrote in the interview, it is the same as writing a novel.

7 I want to show it to someone, but I do not make a piece to show it. Aim for the work you want to decorate your own room as in the photo.

8 What is copycat? Nowadays, it is suspected to be beaten. There is something called Mimesis?

Today's photo.

It is a photo taken from Eurostar.

This video is an explanation.

I went to Milan in 2005.

At that time, I went from Milan to Venice.

We took Eurostar into the transportation.

This photo was not taken from a very fast Eurostar.

When I changed the track, I took a picture at the moment I slowed down.

Is there a Japanese beside you?

Please have my video translated.
