A small man is standing on a large hand. He is looking upwards and his body is tense, with fingers splayed. The man is balancing on the index finger and thumb of the large hand, a feat that seems difficult enough in itself, but his exertion is of another nature. He is gazing with rapt attention at something in the sky, as though he were receiving a message or taking part in a dialogue.
Carl Milles worked on The Hand of God from 1949 to 1953. This was one of three major commissions he received in the 1950s and completed before his death in 1955. The original was made for the Swedish city of Eskilstuna, and today it can also be seen in other places around the world, for instance in Tokyo, Melbourne and Beijing.

"For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,” says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word".

I love these summer evenings that are warm, silent and beautiful. After all, we only have such evenings a three or four months every year, so by April you really miss them. Here's a waterscape in my hometown; that great church seems to be visible from almost anywhere here. At the very edge to the right, you see Carl Mille's sculpture "Hand of God" from 1954.

The three tallest blocks visible are now owned by the Metropolitan Housing Trust.
They were built and formerly owned by Enfield Council.
I'm out of architectural shots for now, and still don't dare to take my tripod into civilized areas where I might run into people I know, so can't take any new ones right now. So, trying something slightly different, again, from an open air museum just outside of Stockholm... :-)
This one and the next two were inspired by an exhibition I saw the other day, with photos by the fascinating (and now late) woman Lee Miller; photo model turned photographer's assistant turned surrealist photographer turned fashion photographer turned war photographer in the 1940s... for Vogue! Pretty cool, in my opinion...
This is Carl Milles' statue "Hand of God", with some very nice and fast moving clouds in the background.

Some hope for the planet... I was in Bentonville, Arkansas all this week, where WalMart announced that it will be creating a system to put a sustainability index on every product it sells, and that it will work with other retailers and manufacturers to make it a single standard (webcast can be seen here).
The sustainability index will communicate the environmental and social impact of the product from a life cycle perspective.
WalMart and other corporations have funded the Sustainability Consortium, led by Arizona State University and University of Arkansas, to help provide the research needed to support the effort. I am excited to be part of the team that will develop an "open" life cycle inventory system. Such a system will enable companies to estimate the environmental and social impact of their product through raw material acquisition, manufacturing, distribution, use, and disposal/recycling.
The world places a lot of emphasis on tracking carbon dioxide and other green house gases because of their effect on global climate change, but water--both its availability and its health--is a huge sustainability issue also.
From a production standpoint, most agricultural products require a lot of water--Did you know that it takes 300 gallons of water to make a 12 ounce can of Coke? Most of it is because of the water needed to grow the sugar cane. On the consumption side, drying of Himalayan glaciers could put one-sixth of the world's population at risk for fresh water.
Let's hope we can move as fast as we need to. (Explore Front Page)

This statue outside The Royal Exchange, entitled "Hand of God", is by artist Lorenzo Quinn, and was previously installed in Park Lane, London. This is 3 exposures with -1+ stops bracketing, then Photomatix for HDR and tonemapping, and finally Photoshop for the finishing touches.

blood series uses visual language to generate archetypal, primal figures. there is a subconscious decision to call forth these god figures - form representations. they are tied all together in blood -- birth, life, family, violence and death. from "the garden of eden" to "the hand of god" -- witness horror, joy and recovery.
"blood series" was created in a two week painting frenzy following the opening of my art show. there are six paintings in this series. they all were painted in two weeks

If you are not French, it’s likely you haven’t ever heard the word “Saintonge”, and have no clue what it means. If you are French, it’s probably the same thing. Unless, that is, you are a fan of Romanesque, in which case you know that Saintonge, that small region of France centered around the town of Saintes (hence the name), not far from the Atlantic Ocean, just North of Bordeaux... features the highest density of Romanesque churches of all the country!
I had never visited that area of France, and so in the middle of October 2021, I took that long overdue trip and stayed two weeks in Saintes, driving left and right daily to photograph all the most significant Romanesque churches... and unfortunately leaving out many others, as they are so thick on the ground!
We now truly begin our voyage through the Romanesque Saintonge, and with an absolute masterpiece: the Abbaye aux Dames in the town of Saintes, about a five minute walk from the apartment I had rented...
Founded in 1047, this Benedictine abbey for women numbered as many as 100 nuns and functioned around the Saint Mary church, built between 1050 and 1100.
It is widely regarded among specialists as an unsurpassed overall achievement in artistic quality, balance and purity. It is indeed a fitting point to begin our journey through the Saintonge romane...
God Himself is almost never represented in physical form. On this very famous motif, probably the most famous of all, sculpted just above the entrance into the church, you can see “The Hand of God” in a mandorla supported by two angels.

A pulsar wind nebula seen from Chandra the x-ray observatory. This is an old favorite, often called The Hand of God for its appearance as a big human hand. In reality, however, it's just a kind of crazy nebula shaped by whatever insanity this neutron star is inflicting upon its surroundings.
Even after summing up all of the cumulative data from various observations over the years, the image still has a rather low S/N ratio. It seemed visually harsh, but at the same time, I often prefer the noise over heavy smoothing. This time I overlaid my smoothing group to 60% opacity over the unsmoothed image, which leaves a good hint at the S/N ratio while calming down the coarseness in texture a bit.
Anyway, it's a fascinating object, and I wish there were more nearby pulsars out there for us to look at, but I'm glad there aren't any too close.
More information and various other resources are available at the Chandra website, for anyone who may be interested.

While taking photos of a sunset, this cloud window opened and formed this image that looks like a great hand catching something, or setting it free.
This hand like wave seems to gesture upwards as it reaches out and crashes onto the harbour wall at Porthcawl.
"The Hands Of Wisnu" is a statue of two huge hands/arms made from copper at the GWK Cultural Park on the Bukit Peninsula, Bali, Indonesia 2009 ©BrianOMahony.net
This huge statue is part of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana designed and built by Nyoman Nuarta. Currently it is in 3 parts with 'The Hands', 'The Garuda' and the main 'GWK' statue all located in different parts of the park. It is suppose to stand well over 150 meters tall once completed! But some people believe it will never be happen because certain religious authorities on the island have complained that its massive size might disrupt the spiritual balance of the island!
Processed in Lightroom, overlayed two presets called: Auto Enhance - Landscape (Canon) & CP Dragan 4, increased Vignetting and decreased the Light Tones. Then increased the Contrast, Brightness and made it a little bit warmer.
