D&H 5000 leads a C-420 and C424m on a Northbound that is climbing Richmondville Hill at West Richmnodville, NY on December 29, 1981. I was fortunate to catch 2 trains with all Alco lashups on this trip to the area. This was always my go to location in the area as my friends grandfather lived just a couple miles up the road from the West Richmondville grade crossing.

D&H 7413 & 7615 are bringing up the rear of GV-1 as it heads West out of Hornell, NY on January 27, 1979. The D&H 7613 is leading on the other end of the train. The power was split up at the crew change point in Hornell, with power placed on both ends of the train to facilitate the reverse move required at Attica to then ultimately head East on the old DL&W to the G&W interchange in Griegsville, NY.

Tο Bουνό

Eις βουνό εγώ κι’ ο Έρως

κ’ η Aγάπη μου μαζί,

H Aγάπη μου αποστούσε

η Aγάπη δεν βαστά.

The Rocklin Rocket is seen switching one of its last industries before tying up for the day. At MP 110, the local switches H.B. Fuller to pick up and drop off a few tanks. After this it will switch a lumber industry less than a mile south then go the final couple of miles to the Roseville yard.

Ploumanac'h is a very nice village with a natural harbour in Bretagne. It has a very nice lighthouse which perfectly integrates with the surrounding rocks.

We were very lucky in experiencing such an awesome sunset in that location.

... Kiowa keeps a watch on me.

The Glens Falls local does some switching in front of the historic Fort Edward station. Thankfully this station has undergone restoration and is in much better shape than it was throughout the 90s. The lead unit wears a "mixed image" D&H/Reading paint scheme. It was once painted in the D&H blue-dip with yellow nose scheme, but it seems most of the blue paint has completely worn off.

(week 35) Explore no. 70, thank you!

Another classic D&H lashup of 4 Alco's and an EMD, each in a different paint scheme, lead a Northbound out of Oneonta on August 9, 1980. This view was brand new at the time since INT88 had just been opened and this is where the expressway crossed over the D&H near Colliersville, NY. I was using 2 cameras, one with Kodachrome, and one with Tri-X. I posted the color pic years ago, this is the B&W pic. Here is the color version: www.flickr.com/photos/85501582@N03/12172444593/in/album-7...

Another "throw away" I decide I like now. D&H 504 leads a 3 builder consist on a Westbound D&H freight at Canaseraga, NY on a very foggy May 1, 1980. It was a little too dark to get a fast enough shutter speed to stop motion on Kodachrome.

B&H 416 is tagged with "Lets Go Brandon" as it is DIT on the LA&L road train in Henrietta, NY on July 18, 2022. One of the number boards on the rear is also missing. With that headlight in the nose and that nice bell, this would be a neat engine to catch leading the road train some day. This unit was originally CP 8761 and became CP 1811 after rebuild with the low nose.

Big GE 655 leads a Binghamton bound Lanesboro Detour train at the old Erie coaling tower in Susquehanna, PA on 12/28/1985. This was supposedly the last Lanesboro detour train, so the Lanesboro helpers that assisted in the run around move on the Penn Division were left on the end of the train for the trip to Binghamton. The newly rebuilt tunnel was open for train traffic and the first train would pass thru it later that afternoon. After New Years, the Lanesboro detour was used again for a couple of days so that some final finishing work could be completed on the tunnel. Once the tunnel work was complete, the D&H Penn Division was gone forever. There were a few railfans on hand for the final move on the Penn Division, most notably the late J.J. Young Jr., and his photo essay from that final train was featured in an issue of Railpace as I recall. This day in December was my last hurrah however, and the last time I was ever at this location.

Milkyway Above Crater Lake

This was easily my most challenging shot from my 8 day trip to the Northwest last July. To start with, July is already pretty late if you are trying to shoot the full arch of the Milky Way over the horizon, so I knew I might not be able to fit it into the frame...but I thought it was worth a try.

Secondly, when I pulled in to Crater Lake about 30 minutes before sunset after driving for 16 hours I found that the entire Western side of the rim was closing at 8:45 PM for road work. This meant no sunset and presumably no Milky Way shot. They said they would be leading caravans through until 9 PM and then everything on that side of the park would be closed. I hadn't seen anything online about the entire West side of the lake being closed.

Undeterred, I followed along behind the car in front of me when they allowed us in, but I ditched out of the line as soon as we passed the Watchman Overlook. While the other cars dutifully exited the West side, I pulled over to a pull out and just waited after I passed all of the equipment and another flag man. I was clearly out of the construction area and I was hoping that once it got dark, no one would notice me.

Sure enough, several more caravans passed me and a few construction trucks, but apparently no one cared that I was parked in a pull out off of the road. I took a short nap and waited for the sky to grow dark enough. When I got out of the car, I instantly regretted not packing for the mountains as the wind was howling and it supposed to get into the 40's over night. It was almost a mile walking back in the dark to the Watchman Overlook. Just as I had feared, the arch of the Milky Way was already high in the sky, but I set up my tripod as quickly as I could and managed to grab several shots before the arch was directly overhead. I used the Rokinon 12mm 2.8 fisheye which seemed to well in this instance as I was able to pull the arch into the frame. I think the lake and foreground was a 2 minute exposure and I blended it with a 25 second exposure for the Milky Way. I only had a few tries before the arch was out of the shot.

After heading back to the car, I kept driving North until I had cleared the restricted area and pulled into another parking lot where several other folks were already camped out for the night. I tried to get some sleep, but the Prius kept bouncing in the high wind and I finally gave up around 2 AM and just kept driving North to my next stop which was Proxy Falls.

D&H 7413 leads a Southbound on the Penn Division through an ess curve that I have labeled as Windsor, NY on August 10, 1985. It was another great weekend spent around Lanesboro, PA catching Lanesboro Detour trains. Corrections welcome on the location.
