When I was a kid I loved these machines, as the gumballs sold here, were the very best for bubblegum bubbles. Unfortunately my parents neither liked bubblegum nor these vending machines...

Though chewing gum is still popular, these vending machines are only rarely seen meanwhile. And most I found over the last years looked forgotten and neglected.

nice assortment of kitties...

My flickr pro account expires tomorrow! Here are a few shots that I never uploaded because I didn't think too highly of them. Somewhere along the way, between experimenting w/ beginnings, jumping into social media, meeting the man I love, I seem to have forgotten that flickr was for sharing pictures appeal to me, no matter how imperfect other people think they might be.

I'd like to get back to that.

This is a gumball machine at my parents' house. My great aunt gave it to them. It takes pennies, but it also takes any coin, really. One of my best friends' children head straight over to this machine every time that they come over to my parents' house (which is about once a year when I am in town) and ask for pennies. You can also get to the gum by removing the lid, which is my favorite method.

I was thinking about a photo to take about something that indicates "things that make me happy." Multi-colored sweets make me happy. Why did I want to photograph something that makes me happy? Well, I got some good news recently... not fantastic, but positive news, and I want to celebrate the small things. I want to remember the good and let go of the less-than-good.

So, here's one good thing: my teaching evals. Last night I was reading some blogs and I remembered that I forgot to check on my teaching evaluations from last semester. I could have viewed them online as early as 12/29/07, but since I have been on holiday and I was visiting with my family and boyfriend, I forgot. Then someone posted about their evaluations, and I remembered to check mine. The students' evaluations of my teaching were all extremely high. That's nice. It's always good to celebrate the positive news, and I appreciated the feedback. Some of the critical comments were too abstract for me to know how to respond to them, though... like...

"I liked the information in the course, sometimes we do so much exploring on our own that I feel that sometimes, it wasn't as beneficial as learning other things instead. For this kind of course, it was beneficial, though."

Here's probably the most representative example quote: "Great course that had an excellent professor. The course was designed well and will help me in the future."

So, that's nice. Feedback like this was the little treat that awaited me online.

Another treat that awaited me: over email, I received news that I won an election. I was running for an office in a major professional organization in my field. Usually tenured professors are in these offices, so I hope I'm not an idiot for signing onto something like this prior to tenure! There is one other non-tenured person in an office in this organization, though, so it's not totally crazy of me to do this. I figure it's another way for people to learn about who I am on a national level, although it's probably better for people to know who I am through my research than my service.

I wanted a treat that awaited me at the end of the day (due to my own effort) to be a final draft of my article that I want to submit. It's still rougher than I want it to be. I'm not done yet. So, this treat, being able to say that the article is finished, is still yet to come. I have to adjust the introduction and literature review quite a bit more. I will work on it on the airplane on Saturday.

Got this from Amazon, it's made surprising well for the cheap price. Made of metal and glass, no plastic just like an old fashioned gumball machine. Holds about a pound and a half of jelly beans and accepts any type of coin including pennies or you can disable the need for coins,

Gumball machine detail.

The gumballs don't taste very good but I think it's the idea that counts, really!

My gumball machine in dimly lit room. Using flash.

I had no idea what he was from, got him from a gumball machine, but now I know, he is from Pokemon! Cool =D

Glad to get rid of this stupid thing finally!

i was stuck at the barbershop for an hour, waiting for someone to get their trim. Sheer boredom and gray skies outside led to a shot of this gumball dispenser. Trying for a bit of COLOR on a dreary day!
