The name of this region off Eddystone Point is memorable. And so is navigating a boat through these waters. But this is the landing ground that was used to bring in all materials to build the lighthouse in 1889.
A short drive up the very steep Flagstaff mountain brought us to Lost Gulch Overlook, which offered incredible views spanning from Nederland to the jagged, snow-capped peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park.
This was a popular place for sunset and engagement photos in the city of Boulder, perhaps you still remember this Lost Gulch Engagement Photoshop, taken about six minutes before this one.
There were many people watching the sun go down, but everyone was quiet and respectful. We all stayed for a little longer hoping for an afterglow but there just wasn't one.
Thank you for your visit and support; be safe and be well!
Buckskin Gulch is a fine slot canyon in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Arizona, but with a wider river botton at the canyon floor than some of the other slot canyons like Wire Pass and Antelope Canyon. It makes it an easy place to hike. I brought my sister along to give you the scale of the place.
A well timed vacation to the Northwest brought me to Montana the day after a westbound freight train derailed at Quinn's MT on the 4th Sub. This brought rare westbound and heavy traffic over the 10th sub as well as the use of manned helpers over Evaro Hill for the first time in almost a decade. Here we see a westbound stack train detouring across Marent Gulch with a 4 pack of Montana Rail Link SD70ACe's pushing the train up to Arlee. Photo taken April 5, 2023.
Originally built for mining silver, Corkscrew Gulch is situated in the San Juan Mountains near Silverton, Colorado
At over 13 miles (21 km) long, Buckskin Gulch is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwestern United States (and possibly the longest in the world)
The westbound Night Gas soars above the Marent Gulch trestle a few miles northwest of Missoula. This is on the 10th Subdivision, MRL's non-signalled secondary route between De Smet and Paradise.
The fragrance of the evergreens was like perfume as we hiked in Cucumber Gulch Preserve, a nature preserve in Breckenridge, Colorado. The trail descends in this view, through the tall spruce, pine and fir trees, opening in the background to the slopes of Breckenridge Ski Resort. There is a trace of snow visible in the background mountain top.
The town of Breckenridge is at an elevation of 9600 ft (2926m).
Two classic barns on Spring Gulch Road near Jackson, Wyoming share a beautiful view of the Grand Tetons in the distance. The creek and fences are a nice bonus. HFF
Notched out with nine cars, the hill job leaves downtown Tacoma in its wake as they charge up hill with their second cut of cars.
All the cool scenery you could want in a slot canyon. There were narrow slots with high walls, great contrasts between the light and shadow, and pictographs. Look at the weather report before entering though...you would probably never survive a flash flood here.
There is a fence here. The tree acts as a fence post. There is another post and wires down heading toward the right bottom corner.
Happy Fence Friday!
Please pardon me for adding a rant. I am appalled that cattle are allowed to destroy this gorgeous landscape. The soil is mottled with their footsteps and their excrement littered everywhere. Plus they ramble over delicate rock formations. The remains of the ancient fences don't seem to corral the cattle in any way. In addition, horses are ridden frequently in the area, leading to more piles of excrement. On top of these insults, hikers are urged to bag and carry out their waste! The narrows are plagued with putrid water and high coliform count so humans are urged to be the solution. In my opinion, it would be more effective to remove the cattle and limit the horses, plus require the riders to bag their horses waste and carry it out. This is a more effective solution!
CWEPAH 23 exits tunnel 3, through Bull Gulch and into tunnel 2. This fill, originally a high trestle in D&SL days, washed out on 9.13.13 and the Moffat Subdivision was closed for a month.

The Day Gas crosses Marent Gulch on an interesting bridge as they approach Missoula and an end to their day.

Looking back at a long ago and particularly adventurous hike in Coyote Gulch. Shortly before the Jacob Hamblin Arch you reach these so-called Swiss Cheese Falls.

Scorpion Gulch is an old abandoned store at South Mountain Park in Phoenix, Arizona. This rock wall building no longer has a roof.
The bridge at Russian Gulch, a pleasant little nook north of Mendocino on the California coast, named, as you may guess, for the Russian seafarers who landed there.

Leslie Gulch is a canyon in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is on the east side of Owyhee Lake, a reservoir on the Owyhee River. Its abundant and striking rock formations are made of tuff.
The gulch was named after a local rancher, Hiram E. Leslie, who was hit by lightning here in 1882. Previously it had been called "Dugout Gulch."
Last leg of our Southeast Oregon Tour of 2022.
Unfortunately, we battled with wildfire smoke everywhere we went in Oregon. Many photos were taken through closed and tinted car windows, which made for some very unclear and distorted colors. Still, it was a wonderful trip and we saw many landscapes and wildlife that we would have missed had we stayed away this year.
