Our guidebook suggested going in late afternoon when crowds were less and light was best for photography. He was right about the light, but four hours was not enough time in this beautiful spot. If we are ever lucky enough to return to these gardens, we will plan to spend the full day.

Day 15 of #inktober - prompt: Guidebook

The “Guide du routard” (GDR) is a well-known guide book in Francophonie. Originally was a guide to the attention of the back packers co-written with the advice and tips of globetrotters in the tight budget. I have read a lot of them when I too was traveling with little budget, and even today they serve as guide during my discovery trips abroad.

The inktober challenge is very simple. Just draw the prompt of the day in ink and publish it using the inktober hashtags. After a few years where I passed my turn, I am trying this 2024 edition even though it will be a month full of activities and commitments. I chose the free-style of the continuous line to represent the prompt, without fuss or colors.

The Maritimes #11: Ceilidh Trail

Our guidebook told us about excellent hiking trails along the Ceilidh Trail. It said a local deli sold trail maps for $5. We stopped by the deli, but it was permanently closed. So we went across the street to the gas station, but the attendant said he didn't know anything about the hiking trails. So we went to the grocery store, where we talked to basically the entire staff until we found someone who knew what we were talking about. The grocery store was now selling the maps. We bought a map which was honestly a little confusing and contained handwritten modifications for trail updates. Anyway, once we got our bearings we were off down a few side roads and made it to the Mabou Post Road Trailhead. A long process, but a very nice hike. Five stars.

I knew from the guidebooks that the Caffe Torino on the beautiful Piazza San Carlo was famous but it didn't look much different to many other cafes on other squares. I did like the neon Martini sign though.......

In prior to going to New York on a business trip in November 2007, I had first thought that this would be a good opportunity to try the Moleskine City Notebook series.

When I checked a sample of the New York notebook at a stationery shop, however, there was a section or two in it that I had trouble figuring out how to use efficiently.

I contacted a well-traveled internet friend of mine whom I consider as a reliable source of stationery items and asked that person's opinion on the New York City Notebook; an email from that person confirmed my doubts on the notebook.

Consequently, I bought a pocket Moleskine with squared pages - my favorite type - and converted it into a guidebook as I did for my trip to Paris in 2005, pasting trimmed printouts from several webpages (including local maps) and writing down information on NYC that I found indispensable. I also used it as a travel journal for the trip.

For me, the custom-made notebook worked well throughout my stay in NYC.

Our Beloved Garden

Many people associate Kanazawa city with its stunning Japanese garden, Kenroku-En. One of the three great gardens of Japan, guidebooks often list it as a must-see attraction.

The three Chinese characters that make up its name reveal the philosophy behind the garden.

The first character, “ken”, means to hold multiple functions. The middle one, “roku”, is the number six. The final character, “en”, signifies garden. All together the name literally means “a garden with six functions”. So what are these functions, and who decided them?

They are derived from a Chinese poem composed about the nineteen great gardens of China. Kenroku-En has six features in direct contradiction of each other.

The closest English equivalent to these pairings would be spaciousness and profoundness, artificialness and antiquity, water fountain landscapes and mountain panoramas.

This once-private garden for Lord Maeda officially opened to the public in 1872.

An entrance free was introduced in 1976, though residents of Ishikawa prefecture are exempt on weekends. It is also free to everyone during New Year’s and days designated for enjoying the beauty of nature, such as during the cherry blossom season and harvest moon.

Located in the heart of downtown, its not uncommon to see the residents of nearby homes walking or jogging around the premises. The garden is not only a popular destination for tourists, but a beloved park for the citizens as well.

In the guidebook I used on my 1991 visit, by Gary Stiles and Alexander Skutch, this bird was known as Sooty-capped Bush-Tanager. The common name now uses the genus name, and the species is no longer part of the Tanagers family, rather being placed in the New World Sparrows.

This is a great time of year to explore the California Coast, before the summer fog moves in. Check road closures before heading to the Big Sur Coast, since the heavy rains this year have caused issues with mud slides and washouts closing many of the roads and bridges.

I used this image as the chapter header for the Santa Cruz to Big Sur Coast chapter of my 320-page guidebook Photographing California Vol. 2 - South, starting on page 185. I couldn't find a prior copy of this image here in my Flickr photostream.

No Shutdown! Mountain Home State Forest by Jeff Sullivan

Looking for an alternative to Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park? Consider visiting the sequoias in California's Mountain Home State Forest near Porterville. There are three ponds for reflections, miles of roads through sequoias, and dogwood trees which should be peaking in Fall color right around now. Two very narrow one-lane roads J37 and 220 form a loop through the park, with J37 being marginally less extreme with 10MPH blind hairpin turns. There are 5 campgrounds in the area. The ones managed by the National Forest Service are most likely closed, but I believe Hedrick Pond is State, and Balch Park is either State or private.

Hopefully this is the last weekend we'll have to endure national parks and federal facilities closed. I hear there's a debt ceiling deal in the works. It's temporary of course, so Congress can mess with us again as soon as possible.

Germany - Castle Dhaun Guidebook by Larry Syverson

Castle Dhaun (Schloss Dhaun) was built in the 1100's near the towns of Simmertal and Hochstetten-Dhaun, Germany. It was built on a hill to protect the traffic on the road. The castle has besieged in the late 1300's.

We visited the castle in May 2000.

My mushroom guidebook lists several species of coral mushrooms that look like one another, some "edible," others "inedible," and one "toxic". The skull-and-crossbones icon connected to the latter says enough. My own rule of thumb is simple: Only eat mushrooms from supermarkets. Photography, on the other hand, is always permissible.

We had some ice cream at "Berthillons" (29-31 rue saint Louis en l'ile) because our guidebook said you can get the best ice cream in Paris there. But to be honest, it was gross *lol* But at least it made a nice picture.

We have learned our lesson - never trust a guidebook when it comes to ice cream!!!

Wir haben uns ein Eis bei "Berthillons" (29-31 rue saint Louis en l'ile) gekauft, weil unser Reiseführer meinte, dass man dort das beste Eis in Paris kriegen könnte. Aber um ehrlich zu sein, es war ekelig *lol* Naja, wenigstens hat's fürs Foto noch getaugt. Und wir haben was fürs Leben gelernt: Niemals einem Reiseführer vertrauen wenn es um Eis geht!!!
