The guidebook says peacock is the motif for the design of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque which was built for the use of royal family only. Peacock displays his feathers and prances around as the Shah of Safavid dynasty showed off his power in 17th century.

It is quite interesting to compare this with other design such as Imam Mosque (see previous upload) standing in the same Naghsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, Iran.

Dodge?

This location is described on page 143 of my 320-page guidebook "Photographing California Vol. 2 - South".

Buttermere – the lake by the dairy pastures – is 2 km long, 570 m wide and 23 m deep. The classic combination of lakes and mountains has made this popular with visitors since the beginning of tourism in the Lake District. A visit to Buttermere is principally for its natural attractions as the area offers some of the best walking country in Lakeland. There is a footpath running round the perimeter of the lake, and lovely walks to the summits of Haystacks and Red Pike.

In the little Church of St James, is a stone tablet set into the windowsill of a south window as a memorial to Alfred Wainwright, the famous walker and author of guidebooks. The window looks out on his favourite place to walk, Haystacks, where at his wish his ashes were scattered.

The lake is owned by the National Trust.

Many thanks for the invitation to "In Explore" and for the comments received.

The #FlickrFriday #Nostalgia challenge

Welcome to St Mary’s Old Church. Parts of its (unseen here) north wall are 1000 years old, Roman tiles appearing within its fabric. The guidebook accurately describes the church as a harmonious jumble of centuries past, bits having fallen, been knocked down, bits added. A visit reveals ancient graffiti, a large 17th century mural, well preserved death’s head (puritan) gravestones, Victorian burial plots, two graves which (when their epitaphs are contemplated together) reveal how a wealthy and well-regarded local family was stalked by tragedy, and stories of a querulous parish, a problem which made it all the way to the court of Queen Elizabeth I.

But all that has passed. Its parish grew geographically away from the church and in the early 20th century a replacement church was built near the centre of the village, making this one redundant.

Now enter The Churches Conservation Trust, a charity which exists to care for important old churches such as this one which is a Grade I listed building. It, together with a few local volunteers, keep the church maintained and accessible each day. Inside, the atmosphere is one of peace and solitude, the sounds of a busy trunk road about a kilometre away and a railway a little further distant being almost entirely muffled. Its tower was repaired in 2019. The work unexpectedly revealed ancient wall paintings which resulted in a sudden halt to the conservation while plans were made both to conserve them and, in good time, reveal them to visitors. So, although regular services, christenings, weddings, and funerals are consigned to history, this marvellous old church remains alive. The sense of history in and around the building seamlessly joins a continuing story, and long may that be so.

This photo is the one everybody takes when encountering this building because trees in the graveyard greatly inhibit photography from other angles. It has been heavily edited to create an aura of age in order to reflect the 'nostalgia' theme. Changes include it being converted to monochrome with a sepia tone, grain and a vignette added.

These rock formations stuck me as the ideal pedestal upon which to place the Milky Way galaxy, in the context of our universe's seemingly infinite background of galaxies and stars.

May 2020 update - I replaced the original single image edit with three bracketed exposures processed in Sequator.

I'm starting a Flickr group for photos from California in the area covered in my landscape photographers' guidebook "Photographing California Vol. 2 - South":

www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/photographing-califo...

Come show off the places you've discovered and the photos you've taken while using the book!

One of these is different. According to the internet, the Little Red Guides by Ward Lock were promotional, there are certainly lots of adverts in them. I have tried to date the IOW guide the only clue I have is that the cost of a return ferry ticket from Portsmouth was 27/6d (£1.38) Today it would cost you anything from £150 upwards. The Monmouthshire Guide is a Methuen Guide and has no adverts. (One where I was born, one where OH was born and one near to where I now live)

It's only about a mile horizontally to reach this summit, so perhaps 1.4 mile on the ground, but it tends to take over an hour to reach this spot, since you lose much of each step to the loose sand.

My four-page description of these dunes starts on page 135 of my 320-page guidebook "Photographing California Vol. 2 - South".

According to one of my guidebooks, when the Portuguese first (re)discovered the Azores in 1427 , they put a bunch of livestock on the islands to see if they could survive the seemly uninhabitable rocky terrain and then left. Upon their return a few years later they found the cattle to be thriving. Now there are reportedly more cows on most Islands than people. Because of these grass fed cows, the Azores is known for its cheese, milk and beef. All of which I found to be delicious. Reportedly (by the same guidebook), The Azores are responsible for almost half of Portugal’s dairy production. I believe the calf to be of the Limousin breed which was developed in France. Someone with more experience with world cattle breeds than I do needs to confirm it. Several cattle breeds have been brought to the Azores and onebreed, the Ramo Grande breed, was developed on the Island of Terceira.

The publisher of "Photographing California Vol. 2 - South" has transferred the remaing inventory to me. While supply lasts, you can still buy my book on our Web site: www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/photographing-california-...

It makes a greeat Christmas gift idea for photographers!

We're expanding our "winter light" photography workshop series in 2023-2024 to include a session with extra emphasis on black and white: January 10-15, 2024. Trying to envision your end result with color converted into grayscale tones encourages careful consideration of subject, leading lines, composition, as well as creating a master file to work from with maximum bit depth. Then the conversion to black and white should offer a wide range of results. Additional dodge and burn operations can improve your gentle direction fo the viewers' gaze, and tthier interpretation of your intention (which elements in the composition are important).

After years of color photography, spending some time with black and white photography can be like a return to Photograp[hy 101 basics in composition and technique, and it can inform and improve your color photography in the process.

Our original winter light session in December will be slightly repurposed to focus on this year's stunning Geminid meteor shower in 2023, which will offer over 11 hours of dark skies, for rmaximum success capturing the year's most active meteor shower. So we'll spend the first three days and nights on landscape photography and practicing techniques for capturing Geminid meteors, then we'll go camp somewhere on the last two peak meteor shower nights, so we can cpature as many meteors as possible and assemble composites.

We have at least four trips to Death Valley planned for this winter/spring. After winter light and Geminid meteors in December, and winter light in January with extra focus on black and white photogrpahyt hen as the current El Nino weather pattern promises to deliver above average precipitation to Southern California (and wildflowers?), we have two spring trips in March. The first Spring in Death Valley is a lodging-based trip in the main Valley with all the iconic sites, the second session is right after that, focusing on more remote and rugged places that are best reached via camping-based trips and high clearance 4WD vehicles. Both March sessions offer the opportunity to pursue Milky Way photography beforee dawn. They could be taken back-to-back!

Tibet, denied by some, embraced by all.

Mount Khyung-ngon (Blue Garuda) is a broad cliff behind Rabgya monastery to the north, to the south the river Ma chu རྨ་ཆུ་ ( Yellow River). There is a walk to the hilltop shrine (3570 m) and passes several smaller shrines and caves, giving a good view of the river.

Rabgya Monastery (locally pronounced Rabja) is a small enclave on the north bank of the river Ma chu རྨ་ཆུ་ ( Yellow River) belonging to Machen rather than Kawasumdo county.Rabgya Monastery formally known as Tashi Kundeling, is an important branch of Sera monastery, founded on the advice of the Seventh Dalai Lama in 1769 by a Mongolian from Kokonor named Arik Geshe (1726-1803).

The guidebook promised views of Mt Fuji from Lake Ashi in Hakone, Japan. We searched, but as has occurred with many visitors before us, the mountain was hidden by the clouds. Still, it is a beautiful view with the famous red torii gate of the Hakone shrine alongside the lake. Later in the trip, we did get to see Mt Fuji in all its impressive glory.

Bath, England, U.K.

03-25-25

Before I take off on one of my trips, I plan for enough time at every destination I want to visit. I use internet searches, travel guidebooks, YouTube videos and word of mouth as indicators of where I want to go and what I want to photograph.

As soon as I saw images of The Royal Crescent, a series of row style townhouses along a curved street in Bath, I was reminded of one of my favorite musical numbers in the 1968 "Oliver". The elaborate number, "Who Will Buy" was filmed on a similar curved street. It was built on a studio backlot and the houses are a lot smaller than The Royal Crescent in the town of Bath, but I immediately added The Royal Crescent to my list of places to see when in England.

Of the photos I took, this one, at 12mm and not "lens corrected" seems to me to display the indication of what the street looks like. No people were digitally deleted either. The place is filled with tourists and locals, who enjoy picnicking on the vast Royal Crescent Lawn in front of the street. #1 Royal Crescent is a museum, with the inside decorated as it would have looked in the late 18th century.

From Wikipedia: "The Royal Crescent is a row of 30 terraced houses laid out in a sweeping crescent in the city of Bath, England. Designed by the architect John Wood, the Younger, and built between 1767 and 1774, it is among the greatest examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the United Kingdom.

Of the crescent's 30 townhouses, 10 are still full-size townhouses; 18 have been split into flats of various sizes; One is the No. 1 Royal Crescent museum, and The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa, at the centre of the crescent, is made up of No. 16 and No.15."

I have a new homework assignment for my photography class. For our previous assignment we had to take pictures keeping in mind three components: Beauty, Meaning and Format (remember my Mallet Finger). For this assignment, we add Creativity. The instructor said Creativity is what brings life to a picture and makes it uniquely our own with concepts like freshness, humor, "interpretation that overwhelms translation"... "Creativity is born when necessity meets constraint".

So, our assignment is to choose any theme (word, object, concept, color, relationship... ANYTHING) and photograph it 15 different ways and then take one of those pictures and INTERPRET it 10 different ways. The idea is by the time we get to the end of this assignment we are going to be forced to think outside the box because we will have run out of obvious ideas.

My theme is "Travel" which is appropriate because a week from today, I'm going to be traveling to a place that requires a passport. More on that later.

FYI, I've taken three travel pictures, have ideas for three more and then I'm stuck. This assignment will require, in the end (approximately three weeks from now) 25 pictures and I'm out of ideas after six. YIKES!

Creative "Travel" ideas are welcome! ;D

Perhaps one should not be surprised the photo-man likes travel guidebooks with lots of photos?

Before any of you say "wow, you travel a lot and have been to all these places?" Nope, I only wish!

I buy the odd guidebooks when I come across them in second-hand bookshops. I've only been to New York City, Ireland, England and the Netherlands (of the books seen here).

I'd love to visit Boston, Scotland, Switzerland, Hamburg, Denmark, and Vienna.

My guidebook tells me that these Giant Swallowtail Butterflies are the largest in Canada and the U.S.A.

They can have a wingspan of over 6'' wide.I was lucky enough last August to come across this one and he too was the full 6'' wide size.

Here is a back and underneath view of this most beautiful butterfly.

One of this years calves stays close to its mother as I take pictures from the fenceline. Upon their return a few years later they found the cattle to be thriving. Now there are reportedly more cows on most Islands than people. I believe them to be of the Limousin breed which was developed in France. Someone with more experience with world cattle breeds than I do needs to confirm it. Several cattle breeds have been brought to the Azores and onebreed, the Ramo Grande breed, was developed on the Island of Terceira.

I'd seen a similar photo to this before as it was on the cover of my Lisbon guidebook. I wasn't sure where it was taken but as soon as I arrived at the Monument to the Discoveries I was keen to get to the top to take advantage of the graphically striking paving.

From Wikipedia : "Located on the edge of the Tagus' northern bank, this 52 metre-high slab of concrete, was erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. The monument is sculpted in the form of a ship's prow, with dozens of figures from Portuguese history following a statue of the Infante Henry sculpted in base relief. Adjacent to the monument is a calçada square in the form of a map, showing the routes of various Portuguese explorers, during the Age of Discovery."

All guidebooks show this to be be a common western bird (common year round in the western US; common in breeding season western and southern Canada). As I used to hike the grasslands year-round in the Diablo Foothills, I used to HEAR them in winter, but getting one and hearing one are two different matters. Their warbling song is a joy to hear, but to find one sitting still is another matter. As soon as I'd get within a hill of a meadowlark, he'd take off for the next hill. I weighed 25 pounds less thanks to them. All that said, I had to go to Sacramento 75 miles away to get this shot (one of only two in my entire archives), and he refused - even with my silent pleading - to turn toward me and into the sun. It's the third bird on my nemesis list, a tease like the Kingfisher, but well worth the effort.

Found on Ebay maybe from the early 70's

Strolling aimlessly through Vienna, as the city is so beautiful that it is not necessary to go to those places recommended by the guidebooks, because anywhere you can meet with palaces, gardens, monuments, there is everything everywhere.

We turned a corner and saw a huge palaces surrounded by beautiful gardens and prepared to walk through it.

I was walking away from the palace for to photograph the whole Palace without perspective, when I came across this perpendicular with the central promenade in the foreground and one of the palaces in the background.

I not even know what I was photographing until looking images on the Internet, I was able to recognize it.

This is the description of the palace copied from internet

The Belvedere Palace in Vienna actually consists of two palaces: The Belvedere Lower and Upper Belvedere. Both are of Baroque architecture and surrounded by French-style gardens.

The Lower Belvedere was the first to be built. Its function was to be a villa entertainment for Prince Eugene of Savoy. It was completed in 1716. The palace is full of signs of the cult of personality of the prince. In the "Marble Hall" is a painting on the ceiling celebrating Prince Eugene as the new Apollo. There is also a sculpture called "Apotheosis of Prince Eugene." Today the palace is used as Museum of Austrian Baroque Art, showing local art of the eighteenth century.

Since childhood -- and before I knew how to use a camera -- Sydney has been the ultimate destination for me.

After reading hundreds of guidebooks over the decades…

After falling in love with kangaroos and koala bears from images in National Geographic magazines…

After purchasing dozens of posters of the skyline of Australia's largest city from other photographers...

My fascination with Sydney -- that faraway metropolis in the southern realms of the world -- was further compounded on the evening of December 31, 1999. I sat, entranced and mesmerized, in front of my television set in New York City, watching this other distant city enter the Year 2000 with the most dazzling array of fireworks I had ever seen. I knew then that not only was it a goal to visit Sydney, but I also had to visit at New Year's to be a participant in one of the planet's most popular parties -- and to get it all documented on camera.

All my dreams and aspirations since childhood became a reality between December 29, 2013 and January 4, 2014. Sydney did not disappoint. In combination with the voyage to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore over Christmas, I have felt quite humbled, enlightened, and fortunate ever since this unique excursion concluded. To date, it’s still surreal to realize that I was actually there, exactly the way I had planned since I was a child.

Pantala flavescens, Bauerle Ranch Park, Austin. One of the most widespread dragonfly species in the world, although not normally abundant anywhere at any given time. According to an Odonate guidebook, it is can be found anywhere but Europe and Antarctica. (I can understand why P. flavescens dislikes Antarctica, but I am puzzled by Europe.) They can glide with little energy expenditure and can apparently subsist on aerial plankton if they find themselves over the ocean.

Bill Schneider's guidebook says it might be easier to take the creek instead of using the bushwhack to Lower Mountain Creek. We didn't try it, but I will say that if the water is high, you won't be able to turn the corner from Mountain Creek to the Yellowstone River. So you'll need to bushwhack at a couple tenths of a mile above the mouth of Mountain Creek.

(The corner was iffy even in early August because of the mud.)

Maybe. The best I can come up with from my little mushroom guidebook. With no background on fungus I leave all alone. But they are growing in California Woods Nature Reserve.

Interviews and novels.

About my book.

I published a book a long time ago.

At that time # I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.

Its Japanese and English.

I will publish it for free.

For details # I explained to the Amazon site.

How to write a novel.

How to take a picture.

A sense of distance to the work.

All of these have something in common.

I wrote down what I felt and left it.

I hope my text will be read by many people.

Thank you.

Mitsushiro.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

youtu.be/KZgaWyNZkLA
