Group riding is not for everyone. It requires a certain level of skill and self-discipline. It restricts an individual rider’s options as to speed, changes in route, and lane positioning. To attempt to ride in a group without having good basic riding skills and a good sense of what others in the group are likely to do -- and what they expect you to do -- is an invitation to an accident, one that may involve damage and injuries to more than one bike and one rider. It is also a matter of personality, in that group riding requires good communications, courtesy among riders and a willingness to look out for the safety of others while riding your own ride.

Saturday morning group ride from Denver Colorado's Stapleton neighborhood. Just about 2 hours. 45 miles.
Every Saturday Morning for over 30 years local cyclists meet and pedal to a nearby town for breakfast. During the Winter months it’s mountain bikes and cyclocross bikes on the frozen beach and thru the woods, the Summer months bring out road bikes. The rides range from 30 miles (15 each way) to over 100 at the peak of the cycling season. Numbers range from 1 rider to over 30, many people opt to ski rather than pedal when conditions allow. The riders range from professional racers to occasional riders and everything in between, from teenagers to over 60 somethings.
At the peak of my cycling career I joined them occasionally but working night shifts always made it difficult to make the early start time. These days I’m usually heading out, either running or pedaling, when they’re returning but our paths frequently cross as the ride goes right past my house. I got up early today just to shoot a photo of them expecting a large group like I passed last week but the group was smaller than I anticipated.
yesterday I helped a couple of friends who were organising a group ride. I was on picnic duty. We were really lucky as no sooner than we had finished packing up than it started pouring with rain. It has hardly stopped since!
