Serendipity is when you unexpectedly stumble across something good. And that is what happened yesterday when I was out walking on the moors with a friend and a Short-eared Owl popped up in front of us. Short-eared Owls usually breed on the Peak District Moors so I often see them in summer but they are pretty thin on the ground in winter. Most Short-eared Owls leave the higher ground to spend the winter in lowlands, especially around estuarine saltmarshes. Though the BTO Bird Atlas says that birds in the Uists, Orkneys and the Pennines appear to winter close to their breeding grounds, yet I rarely see them in winter. There was a bit of snow on the ground yesterday but not enough to hamper its hunting. We watched it for about five minutes, and it did appear to catch and eat something, then it slowly headed south and out of sight. I did manage some closer shots but I quite liked this one showing the winter moorland habitat.

William Dendy described the buildings in his book Lost Toronto:
"Inevitably, given the date, the style of the new buildings was Romanesque Revival. It was built on a foundation of roughly finished Credit Valley sandstone, with upper walls of red brick ornamented with terra cotta panels and string courses. The basic arrangement of the design - a projecting triple-arched entrance, a central tower, and flanking wings forming a quadrangle behind - was very common at the time, and had become firmly established in Toronto with Lennox's City Hall (1996-92).... In fact, the new tower, rising 165 feet (50 m) above the ground, like a church steeple above the surrounding trees, became a symbol of the college - an ever present reminder to students, and to the city below the hill, of the importance of the college and the influence of the alumni that had been shaped by it."

It reminds me of magic words of Michelangelo that once said, when was asked on his art: " I saw an angel in that marble and I sculpt to set him free"...
Taken from within the grounds of Kenilworth Castle, the Queen & Castle pub on Castle green. The lady and gentleman taking the footpath had just emerged from the establishment, after probably enjoying their lunch or liquid refreshment.

There had been scattered settlers in the area since at least the
mid-1880s, but the first documented permanent residents of the Pompano area were George Butler and Frank Sheen and their families, who arrived in 1896 as railway employees. The first train arrived in the small Pompano settlement on February 22, 1896. It is said that Sheen gave the community its name after jotting down on his survey of the area the name of the fish he had for dinner. The coming of the railroad led to development farther west from the coast. In 1906, Pompano became the southernmost settlement in newly created Palm Beach County. That year, the tall Hillsboro Lighthouse was completed on the beach, and the rest is history!

Visit to the Open House on October 18, 2015 at the historic Packard Proving Grounds in Shelby Township, Michigan. Packard's proving grounds were on Van Dyke Road about 22 miles north of the center of downtown Detroit. The open house featured many Packards on display, as well as a cruise-in for any interested classic car owner.
