/cast searing totem;/cast tremor totem;/cast cleansing totem;/cast grounding totem;

The neon hushed its hum at 6:00 AM, leaving the sidewalk to the gray, impartial light of a cool Chicago morning. She sat on the curb, the concrete’s damp chill seeping through her fishnets, a sensation both grounding and grim. Her feet, arched into five-inch stilettos for the better part of two decades, throbbed with a rhythmic, pulsing heat. At thirty-eight, her beauty had become a sturdy, well-maintained house, though the foundation felt the weight of the years more than the facade let on.She fumbled with a Virginia Slim, the smoke curling upward like the ghosts of a thousand tips. It was finally over. The heavy satin corset, which had held her together like an exoskeleton since she was eighteen, lay folded in her gym bag—a dead skin she had finally , sadly, shed.

Her mind drifted back to the glossy pages of a 1968 spread, The Girls of the Big Ten. She had been the "Michigan Co-ed," an identity bought with a borrowed sweatshirt and a photographer's eye for her particular brand of high-cheekboned innocence. She had never known the vaulted ceilings of Ann Arbor, only the frantic geography of a cocktail tray, yet the lie had been her most enduring currency. She had been "at the college" for three days, a tourist in a life she was never meant to inhabit.

Two marriages had come and gone, both to men who loved the costume but resented the woman inside it—deadbeats who had mistaken her grace for a lack of gravity. Now, the silence of the street felt like a question. There was the Mirage, waiting with a hostess podium that felt like a gilded cage. There were the old friends in the "industry" out in Los Angeles, their voices raspy with the promise of easy money and harder nights; it was a siren song that held a certain jagged appeal, offering a familiar kind of armor for a woman whose primary trade had always been the gaze of others.

She thought of the younger girls, the ones who viewed the ears as a stepping stone rather than a permanent fixture. They were a different breed, clutching textbooks between shifts; one had even finished her bar exam, trading the tail for a briefcase and the courtroom’s more sober theater. The idea of a classroom at her age, in a world turning toward the sharp-shouldered professionalism of the late eighties, felt like a masquerade more daring than any bunny suit.

Yet she looked at her hands, the nails perfectly manicured but the skin beginning to show the fine, lace-like maps of time.As the first bus of the morning hissed to a stop at the corner, she felt a strange, buoyant flicker of possibility. The club was dark, its era ended, but the sun was hitting the glass of the skyscrapers across the street, turning the city into a shimmering, unwritten page.

Press Release from USCG:

Coast Guard tows grounded vessel, responds to pollution near Anacortes, Washington.

A Coast Guard Station Bellingham 45-foot Response Boat- Medium crew towed and safely moored the fishing vessel Arline at the Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes after receiving a report that vessel was aground in the Swinomish Channel Thursday evening.

A boarding was conducted by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Adelie, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Port Angeles, Wash., revealing the master and crewman aboard the Arline to be intoxicated and the local police department took the master of the fishing vessel into custody.

Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound watchstanders received a call from the master of the Arline reporting the grounding near Anacortes. The Coast Guard Cutter Adelie was on a routine patrol at the time and was diverted to assist the crew of the grounded vessel.

Upon boarding the vessel, the Adelie crew suspected the master of the vessel was intoxicated and issued a field sobriety and breathalyzer test revealing a blood alcohol content level of .115, well over the legal limit in Washington State.

“Thanks to the crews of both Station Bellingham and the Coast Guard Cutter Adelie for making our local waterways safer,” said Captain Joe Raymond, Commanding Officer of Sector Puget Sound. “Boating while intoxicated is not only a danger to the crew of the vessel being operated, but it is endangers the lives of any boaters in the area.”

After the vessel was moored a light sheen was discovered coming from the Arline. Further inspection revealed a crack in the vessel’s shaft packing causing oily water to be discharged overboard.

Containment boom has been applied around the vessel. A Coast Guard incident management team from Seattle is working with contractors to contain further pollution and develop a possible salvage plan for the vessel.

The Arline is a 50-foot fishing vessel homeported in Seattle and is reportedly carrying up to 150 gallons of diesel aboard. The Coast Guard is investigating the grounding.

This isn't the first time the F/V ARLINE has run aground and a captian was arrested:

From September 5, 2013

British Columbia: American skipper arrested Monday on suspicion of impaired operation of a vessel after his fishing boat ran aground near Kelsey Bay.

The 58-foot American F/V Arline was heading south when it ran aground and the two remaining crew members apparently tried to abandon ship. Conditions may have been foggy at the time. The two remaining crew were safely evacuated and the captain was escorted to Campbell River while Coast Guard towed his boat. Awaiting the captain at the docks in Campbell River were Mounties, Canadian Border Services, Transport Canada, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Police arrested the captain on suspicion of impaired operation of a motor vessel and dangerous operation of a motor vessel.

2018 has been a taxing year for airlines operating Rolls-Royce powered Boeing 787s… Airlines have had to endure groundings as airframes await new engines and the suitable modifications.

The second half of 2018 is where there is more pressure on the Boeing 787 fleet as both Rolls-Royce and Boeing are expecting a high influx of Dreamliners being grounded as aircraft expect new engines. Those fitted with General Electric and Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-TEN engines are not affected by the potential groundings.

British Airways are a large Boeing 787 operator and whilst their Boeing 777 fleet have been used when they are not available, they won’t be enough to cover their extensive S18 schedule whilst their Boeing 787s are grounded awaiting modifications and new engines.

Already, British Airways have applied to the UK Civil Aviation Authority to wet-lease up to 3 Airbus A330s from Qatar Airways, but that will become a reality beginning the 9th June 2018 where they will take over 3 flights.

As per Airline Route, British Airways have outlined planned use of 3 Airbus A330-200s being wet-leased from Qatar Airways. The Airbus A330-200s will be operating the following flights commencing 9th June 2018:

-Delhi-Indira Ghandi: Until 20th August 2018, operating BA142/143 daily replacing Boeing 777-200ERs.

-Kuwait City: Until 30th June 2018, operating BA156/157 daily replacing Boeing 777-200ERs.

-Muscat-Seeb: Until 19th August 2018, 5 times weekly BA79/80 replacing mixture of Boeing 787-8/9s.

The interesting part is that the Airbus A330-200s are replacing Boeing 777s on two regular flights and one Boeing 787 flight operating 5 days a week. This will allow Boeing 777-200ERs to provide more slack and possibly fill-in if any Boeing 787s are unavailable, whilst that one Boeing 787 flight removed from the schedule will cover for maintenance.

Due to the nature of the Airbus A330-200s, these flights will not be providing World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) and First services during this time period. The in-flight crew and catering are to be provided by Qatar Airways staff.

Currently, British Airways operates 58 Boeing 777s, which includes 3 Boeing 777-200s, 43 Boeing 777-200ERs and 12 Boeing 777-300ERs. British Airways have 3 second-hand Boeing 777-300ERs on-order, but this is subject to change owing to IAG ad Boeing negotiating an order for wide-body aircraft.

Victor India India Kilo is one of 43 Boeing 777-200ERs in service with British Airways, delivered new to the flag-carrier on 3rd February 1998 and she is powered by 2 General Electric GE90-85B engines. Since new, she carried Animals & Trees World Tail designed by Cgoise and based on the artwork of the Kalahari Desert. She lost her World Tail in October 2004 after being repainted into BA’s standard Chatham Dockyard Union Jack livery.

Solitude and Prayer in the morning has a way of grounding me in this world of instant gratidication

Home is often a place of gathering and grounding. Yet these very qualities have also made it a target for those wishing to eradicate peoples and their cultures. Artists depict how communities resist destructive legacies of government agendas by embracing cherished memories of home and community. In response to the traumas of colonialism, an alternate world of fantastical depictions becomes a site of habitation and diasporic displacement is eased through shared spaces of community and family gatherings. Non-human community is also shown as a reminder that natural sites are shared, cross-species places; to enter these spaces is to enter another’s home. Ultimately artworks remind us that home is a place of respect, enriched through shared experiences, values and memories.

Folks, we at The Shop have a new offering for your design needs: grids!

Are you making a retrowave/synthwave/1980s piece, and need the right grounding element? Are you composing a mid-century modern mood board, and need some visual structure? Are you crafting a collage, and need a nifty pattern? We have you covered.

The set includes forty-five (45) base assets, themselves available in a few different variations. There are scans of real vintage graph paper sheets (metric units). There are scans of printed grids (imperial units). There are scans of two different sets of hand-drawn grids (imperial units). There are distorted grids, created manually while scanning.

Because these are made out of assets that were scanned in, they retain a particular texture, and grain, that makes all of them unique.

In addition to all of this, there are matching transparent PNG versions, Bitmap TIFF versions, and even vector versions. This set will be your new go-to for grids, regardless of the scale you need to work in. And of course, all files are clearly labeled, and organized, as usual.

Explanation:

Phase 1 and phase 2 kits are on the lower left.

Starting at the upper left:

Grounding mat with wrist strap. Doesn't actually have a connector TO ground, you'll note, but does keep you and the workpiece at the same potential, so better than nothing. Now you appreciate the little chain that drags on the ground under the carts and chairs in some labs.

Some people and their environment and wardrobe choices generate more electrostatic potential than others. I know a guy who used to lead with his car keys to the latch seat on the door jamb, whenever he went through a doorway at the office. One key would arc to the bare-metal plate the door latches on. He drew arcs that made audible "pop!" sounds if he didn't offer a low-impedance path, and the arcs hurt. Could have had something to do with polyester suits. I prefer cotton.

The mat can't hurt, might help. If the workpiece's grounded cord is plugged in, use an alligator clip haywire to connect chassis ground to the mat. Or touch the chassis ground with one hand while working. Or connect the mat to ground at a grounded outlet- the North American 3 wire receptacle ground connection take a standard "Banana" jack. (A forthright Canadian friend uses the word "jill" in place of "receptacle"... the counterpart to a "jack". Suit yourself)

Ethernet (RJ-45) to USB adapter. More than two connectors and a wire, there's Ethernet transmitter / receiver hardware in the body of it, and USB receiver / transmitter hardware too. Just like you'd expect, these have their own MAC and you may have to make that known (depending on how your network runs). Sadly, I haven't yet seen a PXE boot setup that accepts the external adapter's MAC. But I have over-written the adapter's default to have the adapter take the place of a failing-but-not-completely-broken built-in NIC...

Note ROM disk with drivers.

Partially-unbent paper-clip, size large. For resetting things with recessed reset buttons, forcing CD/DVD drives to eject, etc. Its on a badge-clip and attaches to the lanyard with the bootable USB stick. Save the last one you made and you don't have to find another paper clip when time is of the essence...

Small tube of thermal putty. Better quality heat-sink-and-fan assemblies come with a dab already in place, and it will squish and flow when heated. If you're reusing a heat-sink when upgrading the processor on something, you'll need your own supply. It does dry out, so put the cap on after cleaning the surfaces. Don't buy the big, economy, size, unless you really use it frequently. I don't like to let an open tube go more than 6 months.

Non-conductive ruler. Wood or plastic. A metal edge on a wooden ruler is OK, but an all metal ruler is unnecessary trouble.

Grounding strap - wrist band to aligator clip, use with mat or separately, see discussion at top.

Pocket-size volt-ohm-(amp)-meter, aka VOM. Cheap. Something to read what you expect to be +/- 5V, 120 VAC, 240 or 208 VAC, +/- 12, 3V lithium cells for CMOS memory, etc. Built-in leads don't fall out or break off. Some alligator and/or "ball clip" jumper wires will help if you need to secure one or both ends. Ammeter functions in these are usually too few mA to bother with, but if you use it, get some replacement fuses, its a "when", not "if", situation.

"Magic" tape dispenser. For mending or sealing paper and cardboard. The "magic" 3M tape can be written on with ballpoint pen, vastly superior to shiny tape.

Large multi-bit screwdriver, with Phillips, regular, Torx and socket ends. For unusual jobs, where it is worth having the right tool for the fastener. You can't buy an assortment of 'bits' without getting all the regular blade and Phillips sizes in any event. I prefer a dedicated handle and a bit that doesn't come off, but I don't have 1.3 meters of wall space to hang them all on.

Phase 4 exists, it includes a small, sharp, knife, coffee cup and coaster, cup or can for pens, pencils, plastic flatware, skinny tools; duct-tape, vinyl tape for color-coding, extension cords, a Brother or similar label maker, zip-lock polyethylene bags, nickel-plated anti-static bags, boxes and bins for organizing stuff, extra monitors, keyboards and mice. Broom, dust-pan, small-but-powerful vacuum cleaner (Mighty-mite from a garage sale, or similar). Speakers for your radio / computer / phone audio when acceptable. I don't favor headphones in the lab, may people do. A water bottle or large plastic cup.

There are also consumables: tie wraps, facial tissues for blowing your nose and cleaning up surfaces, paper towels / napkins, light cardboard tags to attach to stuff that has a story. Blank CD/DVD media. A notebook.

Just enjoying the feel of the wet Autumn leaves under my soles.

2 x PASHA BULKER ZENFOLIO GALLERIES - Plus full details of the grounding and Salvage Operation.

The Pasha Bulker was one of 10 vessels (of the 58 anchored off Newcastle awaiting access to bulk coal loading facilities) who defied requests to move to sea by Port Authorities in the serious 1 in 30 year storm of June 7th-8th 2007.She finally dropped her ballast water and attempted to head to sea,to no avail, being washed up on Nobbys Beach just near the harbour entrance. There was great concern for the likely environmental impacts of an unsuccessful salvage but on July 2nd 2007 salvage tugs were, with the aid of on deck winches and sea anchors, able to drag her free, fortunately with minimal environmental impact.

The ship was successfully towed to Asia after basic repairs where she underwent major repairs to the damaged superstructure. The Pasha Bulker was given a new name and now plys the oceans once more.

Greenpeace saw an opportunity at the most critical point of the recovery operation when the world's media was fully locked onto the story to promote the case that coal causes global warming by projecting a large laser projected slogan to that effect across the ships bows.

🌷8 Benefits of Walking and Running Barefoot on Sand

by Elf Martin

Who wouldn't enjoy a barefoot stroll along a sandy beach? Even the thought of such a pleasurable outing will infect some people with a daydreaming sigh.

It's no secret that going barefoot on sand has its appeal, but did you know it also has many health benefits? If you think wandering down a beach is time wasted, then guess again. Here are a few reasons why walking and running unclod on sand is a great idea:

1. Strength Training

You know that mild struggle you feel when take a step forward in dry sand and your foot sinks a bit trying to get traction? That's your muscles at work! Scientists say it takes 2.1–2.7 times more energy to walk or run on sand than it does to move at the same pace on hard surfaces. That energy is used to strengthen all the muscles between your feet and back, especially your calves, quadriceps and glutes. The dryer the sand, the harder the work... though runners may prefer wetter, firmer sand to maintain proper form.

2. Burn Calories

The energy used to strengthen those muscles has to come from somewhere. According to Berkley Wellness, you can expect to burn approximately 50% more calories by walking or running on sand than you would on paved ground.

3. Improved Propriception

Proprioception—a favorite term among barefoot runners and fans of minimal shoes—is defined as the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium. Basically, good walking proprioception means your mind is in touch with the stimuli coming from your feet, which helps you connect with the world around you. While thickly-padded conventional shoes can numb this ability, walking barefoot on sand is a great way to tap into it. After all, you have between 3,000–7,000 nerve endings in each of your feet. Just think about feeling all those grains under the sensitive part of your arch or between your toes when you walk... I feel tingly already!

4. Relaxing

If your feet are confined in tight or constricting shoes all day, then kicking them off and letting your toes move and stretch out naturally is a great way to give yourself some relief. Sand conforms to your feet without restricting them, so it's almost like a walking foot massage. And if your stroll or run takes you past a body of water then the sound of waves and seagulls will likely help your stress fade away. A study from the University of Exeter suggested that people who spent more time on beaches had less stress and better overall health.

5. Grounding/Earthing

The theory behind grounding, also known as earthing, is that electrical energy from the earth can be absorbed through your feet when you walk barefoot (especially on wet or moist sand) and lead to a multitude of health benefits. Even if you take this theory with a grain of sand—haha—few people would disagree that turning off your cell phone and walking barefoot is a meditative activity that will help you feel mentally grounded and centered. According to a study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, staying constantly plugged into electrical devices has been associated with stress, loss of sleep and depression. Don't underestimate the benefits of a clear and relaxed mind!

6. Gait Analysis

This will appeal more to runners, but if you're interested in analyzing your footstrike then you can either go through the trouble of setting up a slow motion camera by a treadmill at the gym or you can just run barefoot down a sandy beach. A simple glance at your footsteps can tell you quite a bit. Wherever you see a deep indentation shows where you're striking the ground (minimalist runners advocate a midfoot or forefoot strike). If you see a heavy imprint at both the heel and the toe then you may be landing on the heel, rolling to the toe and pushing off too harshly. Strive for a light step that disturbs the sand as little as possible. Hint: slightly wet sand closer to the water will give a cleaner imprint than dry sand.

7. Naturally Exfoliating

Who needs to spend big bucks at a spa when you can revive your feet for free? Wet sand acts as an exfoliant that helps peel dead skin cells from your body. Try it out by walking or running in loose sand and then wandering into the path of shallow waves from time to time to wash it off. It will work for the rest of your body, too!

8. Vitamin and Mineral Boost

Vitamin D is obviously plentiful on any sunny beach, and it has been shown to help improve calcium absorption, autoimmune response and mood. A study conducted by the Baker Heart Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia found that increased sunlight also led to reduced stress and improved sleep and appetite. If you're on a salty beach then the water also contains a multitude of healthy minerals like magnesium, potassium and iodine. Many saltwater minerals are used in topical anti-aging products, so why not step into the waves a bit and get a free dose?

Half Moon Bay

October 15, 2010

In August 1914, hell broke out on the continent, the war declarations hailed between the superpowers' capital cities and soon the First World War was a reality. The Swedish government immediately declared Sweden neutral but called up people to the country's defense. Also on Gotland, church bells rang for mobilization. But nothing happened. The months went by and eventually people began to breathe out, the war did not seem to spread to the north. Certainly, German and Russian naval forces were circling like angry schools of sharks around Gotland, but no serious incidents took place. Shipping was indeed disturbed and a few mines began to float, but otherwise the war was only considered a remote cloud on the horizon.

On July 2, 1915, the relative peace ended. Early on this quiet summer morning, a German naval force heading for Danzig (now Gdansk) in the southern Baltic Sea, after having laid out mines in the Gulf of Finland. Outside Gotland they came across a superior Russian squadron. The German mine cruiser Albatross, who was a relatively slow and weakly armed ship of 2200 tonnes, was subjected to intense firing. Albatross was helpless. The devastation aboard became great: the fire raged and the ship began to take in water, a projectile hit the sick bay and caused a terrible massacre. In the midst of this chaos, however, the German captain had the presence of mind to set course westward, into Swedish territorial waters. Albatross just escaped her pursuers. She ran aground off Ostergarn on the east coast of Gotland.

When the Russians finally gave up and disappeared, the rescue work took place. In the battle, 29 crew members were killed and 49 injured. The ship was turned into scrap. The surviving crewmen were interned and allowed to stay in neutral Sweden during the rest of the First World War. The first place was in Roma in central Gotland. In the fall of 1915, the German crew moved to Tofta south of Visby, then in 1917 moved again to a camp in Skillingaryd in Småland on the Swedish mainland. Albatross was salvaged and towed to Oskarshamn in Småland, where she was repaired. After the end of the war, crew and ships were released. On January 3, 1919, Albatross left Karlskrona for Danzig. The long journey was finally completed. The Albatross was later scrapped and never again served. On Gotland, many friendships were formed between the young German sailors and locals. After the Versailles peace treaty, many Germans returned to settle and form families on Gotland. 27 of the German sailors were buried already on the same day the battle was fought in a mass grave immediately east of Östergarns church. A memorial stone at the site of the grounding shows the names of July 2, 1916. Two of the crewmen who died during transport to Roma were buried at Björke Cemetery, one of which was the ship's doctor, Dr. Hans Karrillon.

Men ingenting hände.
