Question to Grok AI - Can you provide an updated synopsis of the floods which occurred in the Manning Valley with specific reference to rainfall totals, specific dates, recorded infrastructure losses, impact on populations, loss of wildlife and farm animals, totals of loss of residential and commercial premises, costs of rehabilitation.

The Manning Valley, located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, experienced severe flooding in (late) May 2025, described as a "one-in-500-year" event. Below is an updated synopsis based on available information, addressing rainfall totals, specific dates, infrastructure losses, population impacts, wildlife and farm animal losses, residential and commercial premises losses, and rehabilitation costs.

Rainfall Totals and Specific Dates

Rainfall Totals: Taree recorded 412 mm of rain in 48 hours, equivalent to one-third of its average annual rainfall. Other areas in the Manning Valley, such as Mount Seaview in the upper catchment of the Hastings River, received over 300 mm of rain. Six-hourly rainfall totals ranged between 60 and 100 mm, with 24-hourly totals between 100 and 150 mm likely across the region.

Specific Dates: The flooding event primarily occurred between May 20 and May 22, 2025, with the most intense rainfall and flooding impacts reported on May 21, 2025. A flood warning for the Manning River was issued on May 21, with the final warning noting that flooding had subsided at Wingham by May 24, 2025.

Recorded Infrastructure Losses

Roads and Transport: Floodwaters closed major transport routes, including the Pacific Highway at North Taree, isolating communities. Roads and bridges in the region, including those in Dungog and Clarence Town, were submerged, disrupting supply chains and access.

Other Infrastructure: Damage to infrastructure such as fences, levees, and farm facilities was reported, though specific details on the extent of losses in 2025 are limited. Historical flooding in the Manning Valley has caused significant damage to roads, bridges, and public assets, suggesting similar impacts in 2025.

Economic Impact: Infrastructure damage strained public resources, with costs for repairs likely running into millions, as seen in comparable flooding events.

Impact on Populations

Isolation and Rescues: Over 48,000 people were isolated due to floodwaters, with more than 400 flood rescues conducted, including 280 overnight on May 21, 2025. Residents in Taree, Wingham, and Glenthorne were particularly affected, with some winched from rooftops by helicopters.

Evacuations: Evacuation warnings were issued for low-lying areas, with centres established in Taree and Kempsey. Residents were urged to evacuate early due to rising river levels and dangerous conditions.

Human Toll: No specific fatalities were reported in the Manning Valley for this event, but the disruption displaced many residents, with communities like Taree facing prolonged recovery. (Note - This statement by Grok is incorrect as at least 5 people lost their lives on the NSW Mid North Coast during these floods)

Loss of Wildlife and Farm Animals

Wildlife: Flooding can fragment habitats and create barriers for wildlife, potentially leading to genetic isolation and reduced biodiversity. Specific data on wildlife losses in the Manning Valley for May 2025 are unavailable, but the WWF notes that increased flooding due to climate change negatively impacts ecosystems.

Farm Animals: Livestock losses were reported, with cattle appearing on Wallabi Point Beach near Old Bar, likely swept away from nearby farms. While exact numbers for 2025 are not specified, historical flooding in the region has caused significant livestock losses, and similar impacts are likely. For context, the 2022 NSW floods resulted in substantial livestock losses, with estimates of 475,000 cattle affected across broader regions. Dairy farmers in the Manning Valley were forced to dump thousands of litres of milk due to inaccessible roads.

Loss of Residential and Commercial Premises

Residential Premises: Flooding inundated homes in Taree, Wingham, and Croki, with residents like Debra Emerton reporting flooded homes. Specific counts of affected homes in 2025 are not detailed, but historical floods (e.g., 1929, 1978) caused significant residential damage, suggesting a similar scale.

Commercial Premises: Businesses, including Woolworths and BIG W in Kempsey, closed due to flooding. The Manning River Hotel in Taree escaped heavy damage but supported stranded residents. Horticulture businesses, such as orchards, faced widespread damage, with losses comparable to those from ex-Cyclone Alfred in March 2025, where one farmer lost 1,000 macadamia trees.

Economic Losses: The dairy cooperative Norco estimated losses exceeding $1 million from milk spoilage and disrupted operations. Soybean crops in the region faced 80-90% losses, with one farmer estimating $200,000 in damages.

Costs of Rehabilitation

Disaster Assistance: A Natural Disaster Declaration was made for 16 local government areas, including MidCoast, covering the Manning Valley. This activated financial assistance for immediate necessities, grants for low-income residents, and support for local councils to cover clean-up and restoration costs.

Estimated Costs: While specific rehabilitation costs for the Manning Valley in 2025 are not fully quantified, comparable flooding events suggest significant expenses. For example, the 2022 NSW floods led to $1.5 million in water damage and $180,000 monthly income losses for some farmers. Infrastructure repair costs, such as for levees and roads, could reach billions, as seen in other major flood events.

Support Services: The NSW Department of Primary Industries coordinated animal welfare relief, including emergency fodder and carcass disposal, through the Agriculture and Animal Services Hotline. Local councils and the federal government provided grants for public asset restoration and household recovery.

Additional Context

Climate Change: The frequency and intensity of flooding in the Manning Valley are exacerbated by climate change, which increases heavy rainfall events. Posts on X highlighted the increasing frequency of "rare" flood events, with the Manning River surpassing its 1929 record of 6 metres by at least 40 cm.

Historical Context: The Manning River has a history of significant flooding (1866, 1929, 1978), with the 1929 flood causing two fatalities and peak levels of 5.6 m AHD at Taree. The 2025 flood’s severity suggests comparable or greater impacts.

Community Response: Community resilience was evident, with businesses like the Manning River Hotel offering free meals to SES workers and stranded residents. The SES and volunteers conducted extensive rescue operations, supported by early warning systems.

Limitations

Precise data on wildlife losses, exact numbers of affected premises, and total rehabilitation costs for the (late) May 2025 Manning Valley floods are limited. Estimates draw from historical data and regional impacts reported for similar events. For detailed assistance, primary producers can report damages via the NSW Natural Disaster Damage Survey, and residents can access support through the SES or government programs.

ELON MUSK AND HIS PROJECTS...

By Bernard Bujold -

Elon Musk is unpredictable, but it's fair to say that he's succeeded in many of his projects.

Personally, I don't own a Tesla (I've had a few spin rides in a friend's one), and I don't know anything about rockets for space travel...

I am, however, a computer and internet technology enthusiast, and I'm impressed by the transformation of Twitter into X.

Twitter started out as a simple comment board. Still, since Musk's acquisition, the site has become a leader in artificial intelligence, and GROK outperforms all other networks, whether Google's GEMINI, Microsoft's COPILOT, PERPLEXITY, Meta AI, ChatGTP, or Adobe Firefly.

When Musk bought TWITTER for nearly US$44 billion, all observers said he would go bankrupt.

Elon Musk seems to be winning his bet...

And, of course, there's his other bet on Donald Trump to transform the role of the American government. A challenge that Brian Mulroney failed to meet in 1984 when he proposed the exact same project for Canada. It should be noted that Brian didn't have an Elon Musk to back him up, nor troops comparable to those of Donald Trump and that the Canadian mentality is not comparable to the one of the more individualistic Americans.

To be continued...
