The grocery store at the recently closed Bedrock City. Built in 1972 to resemble the popular Flintstones tv show.

whenever I wait in front of my local grocery store, I never fail to be fascinated and entertained by the constant stream of cars and people inning and outing, stopping to chat, herding unruly kids, talking on their phones ... I could probably sit there for a long time, and sometimes I just gaze heavenward, and cloudgaze and then I dig out my camera and go click, click, click, and the preoccupied shoppers stop and also look up to see what they are missing, what is silently happening above us tiny humans while we scurry around attending to the minutiae of our daily existences.

What a surprise I got when my $10 amaryllis finally opened. The flowers are huge and white with a hint of pink. What a nice way to end the year!

Bedrock Grocery (0952)

Night time at Bedrock City, a place right out of history that I have loved from childhood. I've been fortunate enough to do night photography there several times. However, this time was bittersweet. When I was there, I thought it might be the last time I would ever see it since it was going to be torn down to build a raptor park. Since then, however, I've heard some recent news that the new owners have decided to keep the buildings, so I am quite happy to hear that. The clouds often blotted out the full moon but added mystery and drama to the images. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo. This photo may appear in a third book of night photography that I am working on now.

-- Hmm, did one of you leave a cart in the vacant field behind the strip mall? Ha, ha, vacant field in SE Florida is a rare bird indeed.

I'm recording some of the older buildings of Whitehorse these days. Places that have meaning to those of use who have lived here for more than a decade or two.

This photo shows Riverside Grocery, a small family owned corner store (yes, a few of these still survive here and there despite the onslaught of big box shops and now, massive on-line retail outlets.). These little shops were places where local teens could experience their first jobs and adults could find long term employment in a small family owned establishment. I believe that this particular shop has been run by at least two or three generations of the same family. It is one of those places where you can find almost anything if you look hard enough, or just ask a real person.

Juniper: Oh yay! You got Wet Ones at the store! But what is up with the Spam, Chili, and the enormous thing of soy sauce??

Laurie: Well it was slim pickings at the the store this was the best I could do. I figure the soy sauce might make the Spam and the chili taste better?

Juniper: And the huge thing of Mentos?

Laurie: We will need all the mints we can get after this meal....
