Designing for an educational institution (especially a big-ten university) can have its challenges. First, you are working with and for people with huge egos and talents in a real cross-section of disciplines. Then you have the endowment folks who have very large sums of money to lavish on their pet departments, research projects, and planned future development.
This design project was created for a photography show through the university art department for an endowment participant who was the leading power in one of the world's largest farm machinery manufacturing companies. She had gone on a photography expedition in Africa and wanted to have her work exhibited in the new museum that she had just so genererously endowed. How do you handle a situation like that? She was no photographer and her invitation had to be approved by her. You handle it carefully.
My husband had designed a san-serif typeface for all publications concerning the new university museum that he called "New Museum" and that is what we used, along with a very simple layout for the invitations to the opening of her exhibit and just held our breath that she would approve it. She did. Off to the next project.

Perhaps I'll find the designer's name. Or perhaps someone out there in Flickr land will know it. The lettering is out of alignment due to shot over the spine of the book, not part of the design.

COCA-COLA SIDE OF LIFE ART REMIX
Since its early days, Coca-Cola has played an eminent role in the visual culture of several generations.
By continually challenging artists and agencies to create images for its wide range of communication, Coca-Cola also functioned as a catalyst for creative expressions, right ideas at the right time…
The original Coca-Cola illustrations were drawn by masters as Haddon Sundblom or Gil Elvgren with their loving, magical touch. Some of the early Coke images are playful, romantic, cartoony, imaginative; others are trendy and stylized but they are always signs of their times.
The concept of the Remix project is simple. Every selected artist makes a “Coke Side of Life” Remix of historic Coca-Cola visuals and creates a new visual inspired by the brand and its soul, a thematic interpretation.

A. M. Cassandre, the master designer of Art Deco. I think tears when I think of his sad ending after a productive lifetime producing the most innovative graphic design.
Cassandre took advertising into the modern age of the 1920's, especially with his use of iconographic symbols integrated with letterforms.

Flyers that get posted on a bulletin board have to be simple, act as a poster and still carry the basic information when the application form is torn off. The design of this may look stark but post it on a typical bulletin board, especially in a college environment where you have big time competition for getting attention and the starkness works for it against all of the visual dazzle already on the board.
One of my all-time favorite cartoons was one of Sad Sack peering through layers of posted material on a military display board until he had come to the board itself where a very small posted piece of paper said "Now hear this. All troops required on the green at 6:00 am. by order of General G. Washington."
